World at War raging November 11, beta incoming

Fifth installment in Call of Duty series dated for North America; PC and 360 betas opening up in October.

The week after Fallout 3 and two days after Resistance 2, it was Call of Duty: World at War's time to get on the date train. This morning, Activision announced that the fifth installment in its wildly popular shooter series will ship for various platforms on November 11. The game is rated M for Mature, and will retail for $59.99 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and $49.99 on the Wii and PC. The DS version is rated T for Teen and costs $29.99.

Curiously, today's announcement made no mention of the PlayStation 2 edition of the game, which was specifically called out by Activision CEO Mike Griffith during a May 2007 conference call. [UPDATE] However, Activision has since confirmed to GameSpot that the PS2 version, which has a slightly different storyline and a wholly different developer, Rebellion, will ship on the same day and date.

Developed by Treyarch, World at War returns the series to World War II following franchise founder Infinity Ward's massively successful Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It is the first game in the series to depict the Pacific Theater of WWII, where US marines fought Imperial Japanese forces in a series of fierce island battles. Europe is also featured in levels depicting that theater's climactic battle in a bombed-out Berlin. As outlined in GameSpot's recent preview, the game uses the Call of Duty 4 engine, but boasts some new additions such as a squad system, competitive co-op, and a single-player campaign experience system.

In October, Activision will be holding public multiplayer betas for the Xbox 360 and PC editions of Call of Duty: World at War. Those wishing to participate can register at the official Call of Duty site or preorder the game, which will include a token for beta access.

the beta version is great, if you havnt got bored of COD4 yet(which would take a while) then your bound to love this one. more places to hide so not so much running around involved. the lag doesnt seem to be as bad aswell?maybe because there arnt many people playing yet. perk and leveling system looks god aswell, and of course the graphics are awsome! cant wait for teh finished version!

It plays alike to CoD4 but has a better perk system, and more of them.
The maps have more places to 'hide' which is not necessarily a bad thing and has a good balance to it. In effect if you stay in one place all day then you won't get too many kills, but if you run wild like you could in CoD4 you're liable to get plugged. A bit more tactical then CoD4 which can't be bad. The Attack dogs (replacing the helicopter in 4) work quite well too, in the fact that you couldn't really defend against the helicopter, but the dogs can be killed, although there are enough to keep you on your toes.
They've added vehicles and swimming and when they have got the feedback from the beta and tweaked this, they should have a good game out.
(Despite a lot of people wrongly slandering Treyarch).

Call of duty World at War is nothing special its a copy of of cod 4, nothing different. All that is different is the ww2 weapons and surroundings. Same stupid perks as cod 4, the controls are all the same too. Your pretty much just going to buy cod 4 all over again.

Firstly "avals" you can't say that the ai "suck really bad" as no one has played it (except testers of course, but if you were a tester you wouldn't get information from here) and the beta hasn't come out yet either.
This should be a great game. and i agree with you "Odibear". It would be good if they give a donation to the poppy appeal. and it would also be good if gamespot got involved with the beta like they did with CoD4 (HINT HINT)

Looks like it will be a winner. Have pre-ordered. But not happy it's going to be released on Remembrance Day. If it was based on fiction no problem but to be based on ww2 any other day would be better Unless they giving a Large Donation to the Poppy Appeal. hint hint.

I hope the ps2 version share the same quality as the current-gen version (of course not about the graphic, but the gameplay), and will not be another "good on current-gen but sucks on last-gen" game. I have a big hope on this game and I beg the developer for the ps2 version of Call of Duty World at War, please dont add another sucks game to the ps2 game library.

wiifan, it may be only a year since the call of duty 4 release, but they will of been developing it for 2 years by the time it comes out. My guess is that Call of duty 6 was beginning to be made at the point where infinity ward finished call of duty 4, as it's coming out in 2009. They always spend 2 years at least on it coming out. So, to some up, don't worry about it being rushed because it hasn't been. I'm pretty excited

At the moment, it seems that whatever Call of Duty touches (read: what Infinity Ward produces) turns out to be absolutely superb. I think they could actually make a really decent Vietnam game or at least go back to the modern-day route. But I am excited for World at War since no big name has really touched the Pacific War... except for MOH Pacific Assault...

I think it'd be cool if the next COD was in Afghanistan and Iraq. I'm sure if INfinity Ward and Activision worked with generals and soldiers who experienced the big battles there (such as Fallusia in Iraq and Mazari Sharif in Afghanistan), they could pull it off without setting off any heat for unauthenticity. A vietnam one would be a lot of fun too, and maybe a Korean War wouldn't be too shabby as well. I'm gonna preorder the game just for the beta, and if they beta convinces me this'll be good, i'm buying it!

I don't think I'll be buying this as I sick of playing WW2, There always the same story, storm beach/town. Shoot enermy with M1 garand/thompson. Can't wait for COD6 hopefully that will be modern war 2 and made by IW.

Hopefully the multiplayer will still be worth it to by the thing. Despite it not being modern war, it should still be well worth the play and try.
