Capcom's biggest-ever first-week sales take Resi 5 to the top of the UK all-formats chart, knocking Empire: Total War down to seven.

In what is traditionally one of the quietest periods of the year for the video game industry, Capcom has enjoyed a stellar couple of months. After storming into the UK all-formats chart in February with Street Fighter IV, the Japanese publisher has managed to score its second number one in as many months with Resident Evil 5.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game was expected to do well, but Resident Evil 5's success has eclipsed that of its predeccessors. Chart-Track reports that the game's UK sales number more than every other game in the top 10 combined. Not only that, but the game's first-week sales are the largest since Call of Duty: World at War's second week in November 2008, and it actually managed to eclipse FIFA 09's Christmas-week sales from December. The fifth game in the series is the first time that Resident Evil has appeared on a Microsoft console, and Chart-Track reports that the Xbox 360 accounts for 55% of all sales of the game.

Resident Evil 5's gain is the rest of the chart's loss, though, given that most of the other games in the top 10 lose places this week. Last week's number one, Empire: Total War, dropped to number seven after losing 70% of sales, whereas Killzone 2 lost 53% of sales and dropped from three to number five. Wii Fit and Tom Clancy's HAWX bucked the trend by both moving up one place to numbers two and three respectively, although both games also lost sales, 14% and 19% down respectively.

Resident Evil 5's dominance will be challenged next week thanks to a couple of high-profile handheld games. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars marks Rockstar's debut on the Nintendo DS, and Resistance: Retribution makes its way to the PSP on Friday.

    resi 5 is an awsome game. the story in resi 4 was superior but i like the action and the weapons in resi 5. but good job capcom, just charge us for decent dlc in the future yeah.

    oh and @ fps_d0minat0r, well at least microsoft know what their doing.

    Dear god lad give it a rest! The only thing worse than abuse is ignorant abuse. I guess I''ll have to spell it out to you..... YOUR opinion is not law, and believe it or not there are many people out there that will have a differing opinion to your own. Part of being mature is accepting that and appreciating it. It's what makes life and debating interesting. Can we leave it at that or do you feel the need for more petty insults? It seems the 'majority' feel Res4 was superior anyway, so I guess you're not as on the money as you thought. Play the game, enjoy it. That's what it's there for. ok???

    I agree the Wii version of Resident Evil 4 controlled the best. I actually didn't beat RE 4 until it came out on the Wii even though I had it on gamecube and tried it for ps2. Nevertheless, the new RE 5 controls exactly the same as the RE 4 on the GC/PS2, except they switched the run/action button around and let you shoot with the triggers if you like. You can always switch it back to RE 4 style where you aim with one stick, but you lose strafe, strafing is rarely used in RE 5 because you'll mostly be running but it does come in handy when you're trying to sidestep projectiles or long range attacks.

    I pretty much agree with BLuFAlc0n...
    but I am pleased to see RE5 doing so well. I'm really hoping it won't get overhyped though, it seems like its starting to get TO popular. like FF VII popular. The online coop is a great addition, character graphics are awesome, but it lacks a certain something that RE 4 had in the upper hand. I think it was the accessability of shops in game or the slightly more understandable upgrade system. the ability to use your attache case I also liked much better.

    lets just say RE 5 is a really really good game, but not a great game.

    Re5 was good, but let's face it....
    It will NEVER top Re4! We all know that!
    Playing Re4 on the Wii is actually great, and easier to control, you can aim while walking, easy acces to all weapons, great cinematic, bonuses, storylines, everything.

    Then, Capcom decided to bring out a huge hype for Re5, with all of it's full support (Limited Edition PS3 in JP and Asia, 360 in US and EU), LE for both versions (though PS3 version is more preferable), to equal it up with the Wii, Capcom decided to release Code Veronica and Zero on the Wii, and Darkside Chronicles (This time, it's Leon)., and soon enough, Re5! (HD or Not, I don't care). This year...is Capcom's year! What game can top Street Fighter 4 and Resident Evil 5 this year? (Although Street Fighter 4 is better than Resident Evil 5).

    But there are some more games to watch....

    @storm82 - It really doesn't though. The last time I played through Resi 4 was with the Wii version and this played like a dream. Now having played Resi 5 on PS3 the controls feel stiff. Chris controls like a tank, not a person. I want to feel connected to my character so the controls feel responsive, not disconnected as they do in this. I will hold off and wait for Resident Evil 5 Wii HD Edition (if that ever happens).

    It controls perfectly fine. RE4 was praised for its controls and RE 5 is basically an evolved version of that. Your post to me just says you're an old guy who likes writing long posts and hearing his own voice as if his minority opinion mattered to people. The only thing worse than nick-picky people who expected this game to be like Gears of War are people who are still living in the old days wishing Resident Evil was still scary

    either a game is better or its not.....theres no preference about it...

    either the graphics are lame or thier not.
    either the gameplay is good or its not.
    either the story is strong or its not.
    either the AI is good or its not.
    either the textures are good or their not.
    either the game is realistic or its not.
    either the game lasts longer then another one or it doesnt

    hawx is rubbish because we have to share with xbox.

    if it was exclusive to PS3 then it would have 32 players on dedicated servers like warhawk did.

    Xbox does more damage to gamers once again.....great one microsoft.

    If microsoft are charging for XBL, i dont understand why they cant make dedicated servers, its really stupid and the people getting ripped of are even more stupid.

    rubbish games always make the highest sales.
    i can just seen chinatown wars outselling resistance retribution.

    now days devs are targetting noobs with low quality games and high budget campaigning......whereas the good games hardly sell because the market for serious gamers is smaller.

    Well, Assasinnation, apparently it's because it's multiplat but I doubt highly that's the only reason or even the reason. One of our peers claimed that there was no big name attached to Killzone. Really? Tom Clancy or no, you'd have to be blind and deaf to miss all the advertisement and hype for Killzone. All the threads about it. Like Metal Gear Solid, it is being hailed as the savior of the system. So, yeah, big name or no I'd think it'd do better than this. Better than a game which no one was really expecting to do well and not many people were paying too much attention to. Hell, I didn't think it was going to be a success by any margin. I thought it was just going to be a sub par Ace Combat clone. But here we are, it's selling pretty darn well. Surprise.

    I take it you were born in 1982 from your name. If that is the case then I'm 3 years older than you and just because i didn't join gamespot until fairly recently doesn't mean I'm a teenager for gods sake! Growing up with a ZXspectrum like I did, I've pretty much been into games since the birth of the industry. You just have to appreciate the fact that people can have a differing opinion to your own. There are people out there that are of the opinion that game franchises can evolve and be developed beyond their original formula, still keeping the concepts that originally made them great, so you'll forgive me for not liking the fact that you assume that I'm a kid. I was playing games when Thatcher was Poll taxing and minors were striking. Grew up with Gears of War?? I was 27 when gears was released so 'basically' the 'obvious' assumption you make is in fact far from the reality. I haven't mentioned GoW as a comparrison and I have no desire to see Resi games feel or play like GoW, I just wanted a better control system. That's the bottom line.

    @AncientDozer - HAWX is multiplat, and is a tom clancey game, KZ2 is exclusive and has no big name with it, even a 6 year old knows that

    I'm near the end of the game at the moment, and it's pure class. I certainly didn't expect Capcom to top RE4, but they've done a great job with number 5. All the haters don't know what they're talking about.

    I noticed every negative comment about Resident Evil are basically made by members from 2005-2006 or later. Obviously these people grew up with Gears of War and expected it to control the same.

    So Hawx sells despite average reviews (though dropping a bit) and Killzone falls a disturbing 53%. What does that tell you about review scores and buyers? Don't be god damn sheep. I'm not talking this stupid gamespot metaphor crap. I mean people that mindlessly follow other people's opinions without independent thought of their own.

    This is a great game even though it is basically Resident Evil 4 HD Remix. The only people disliking this game or giving thumbs down to positive comments are people who have never played the RE series and expected it to control like Gears of War or any of the "shooters" since this generation is all about shooters.

    I bet the same people are upset you have to conserve ammo at times and use herbs and watch your health instead of just taking cover and waiting for your "adrenaline" to recover by itself for free.

    In my opinion these 'mechanisms' as you refer to them, are faults. We'll just have to agree to disagree by the sound of it. By sleeker I did mean 'walk' and gun at least, and also more precise character movement and less of a lumbering control feel. If you're a fan of this game we'll never see eye to eye and that's fine. Just voicing my own and a few others opinion. Controls that make you panic and are purposefully awkward are I think a terrible idea. Also the feeling of being unprepared when faced with combat, considering you're supposed to be a trained soldier in the game seems a little silly to be honest. When I play a game I want to be immersed in it and at one with the controller, in order to master the gameplay and not cursing it for it's ineptitude, annoying inaccuracy and layout. Nevermind though eh.....it's not the end of the world. I guess my preference lies elsewhere with regards to survival horror games. Nuff said

    By sleeker I guess you mean, being able to run and gun. That would take so much away from the game, it would become just some mediocre shooter. The awkward controls make the experience so much more intense; theyre designed that way to make you panic. Same goes for the clostrophobic feeling... capcom want you to feel like "OH SH*T!!" everytime the enemy appear, not "COME AND GET SOME!!". It's intended that you feel unprepared and every fight is a struggle.

    Stop mistaking the the mechanisms that create tension and a scary/intense experience for faults!!

    Hmmmm....

    I'm sure i'll get slated for this but here goes,

    Run OR shoot!?! In 2009? I thought that the control system would be alot sleeker considering this is supposed to be HUGE, highly developed and anticipated title. Sheva gets in the way ALL the time,(although live play was a great addition). Even though for large portions of the game are set in an open-skied environment, it feels a little clostrophobic at times. Also- DLC you have to pay for one day after launch. Sheesh!

    I got the distinct feeling that this was hyped WAY too much and hasn't in my opinion delivered at all. I really wanted to like this game alot but, well for myriad of little niggling faults I found this game a real let-down and it saddens me to say so.

    This franchise is getting on a bit now and hasn't evolved in the way I was hoping, having loved the original game and Resi 2. Resident Evil Nemesis was in my opinion the beginning of the slow decline in innovation that has failed to exceed my expectations. I have found solace in this saddness since the realeases of Silent Hill(1), Alone in the Dark,(again the first game), Condemned:Criminal Origins, Dead Rising and Left for Dead. R.E was the first of it's kind, and like so many other multi sequelled games hasn't stood up to the test of time.

    Annoying in-game faults are not things to cherish as personality querks of a franchise,(like in Resi's case it's terrible controls, frustrating save system and overly tight ammo supply). Capcom should have been using each successive sequel to improve and in some way re-innovate what is The daddy of the survival horror genre. I realise that obvious improvements have been made through the games series, but screamingly obvious faults that have been visible from day one have never truly been eradicated. It's such a shame......

    Honestly play the 4th first, it is cheaper and the gameplay is very close to that of the 5th. You might not like the control scheme for the 4th (98% the same for RE5) and if that is the case then you are only out $10-$15 instead of $60.

    Good to see Capcom at the top of the charts, well-deserving company which consistently releases great games. RE5 has been nothing but amazing, I can not wait to finish the co-op campaign once finals are done this week.

    Of course R.E 5 sold awesomely - after the 25th time of jet-skiing off of Saddler's island I was waiting for the start of another level; but next time with Chris, in a village somewheres, and an 'Ashley' w/ a gun...

    I guess I can see the haters' points? No 'run & gun', no 'zombies' and no 'Horror', but Capcom heve gone along w/ Dead Rising as a Z franchise that works well, Lost Planet as Run & Gun, and I disagree with no horror when I'm down a mine, with a flashlight shared between Sheva & me and head-eaters biting on me!

    You prolly guessed that I'm giving R.E. 5 a 9.5
