Crytek trademarks Gface, Carvatar, Kingdoms

One month after Warface filing, Crysis creator makes three more USPTO filings for game-related properties.

When it comes to divining the upcoming activities of Crysis creator Crytek, filings with the United States Patent and Trademark Office have proved to be spotty. On the one hand, a trademark application for Crysis Warhead proved to be right on, with the German developer officially announcing the shooter three months after trademarking its title. However, Crytek also has a number of outstanding filings--including those for Warface and World in Crysis--that have yet to be officially attached to a game.

Now, three more Crytek-related trademark applications have surfaced in the USPTO's online database, bearing the titles of "Gface," "Carvatar," and "Kingdoms." All three applications were initially submitted at the end of March, and include descriptors for "computer game software and electronic games" as well as "motion picture and TV films." Gface and Carvatar also include tags for "books and booklets featuring comedy, drama, action, adventure, animation, and music."

The Kingdoms filing is especially noteworthy, if taken in light of Crytek's CryEngine 3 demo shown during this year's Game Developers Conference. At the 2:25 mark, the demo transitions away from Crysis' near-future setting to a medieval time period. The brief clip first focuses on what appears to be a dragon's head--or possibly a siege engine carved as such--before offering a ground-level view of a fortress under heavy assault from flaming catapult shot.

Crytek has previously said that it is at work on an all-new IP at its satellite studio in Kiev, Ukraine. The game maker's Budapest, Hungary, studio is reportedly at work on an as-yet-announced title for the PSP.

Good news from Crytek as always the first company with the engine from the future.

I hope they do come out with some sort of new fantasy IP using the CryEngine 3. That would be sick.

Personally I hated Crysis. The story was alright but the gameplay was rough and uneven, the AI was disappointing, the pacing was terrible, and there were too many bugs in the singleplayer campaign to count. The game looked nice, but it was horribly optimized (granted, this was fixed in Warhead). Felt more like a Tech demo than anything. Sad, really, because Crytek's Far Cry 1 was such a cohesive and exemplary package in comparison.

Really nice to see that they designed their game engine to work on the PS3 & Xbox 360. Hope they get some game studios to use it also.

just me or does the cryteck engine just not look as good as it does on the pc? sounds weird so ill explain better. Crysis on a top range computer looked amazing. you roll back the grfx and it looks ugly... really ugly.

so my point is crytecks new engine doesnt look great since i dont think they are very good at making something that cant handle what they want it to do in the first place

I own a PS3 but i just think that FPS doesnt work out on it, real FPS should be settled on PC. Consoles are great for third person shooters though such as Metal gear solid and Resident Evil, I also find racing and fighting games more handy on consoles

I think all FPS should use PC as their lead development.

Hey Epic, making everything shiny and turning you blind is not good graphics. Take a few notes out of Crytek's book.

Crytek continues to put out amazing engines... Epic could learn a thing or two from them.

That's all nice and dandy, but I just want to know about Timesplitters. Will they continue the series, or is the IP being sold?! What happened to it?!

I just want Crytek to implement OpenCL physics... this update is so minor. We need exploding entities, cloth physics, and dynamic terrain deformation.

Cool, crytek games! I mean as long as it's not pretty graphics AND repetitive gameplay, I'm sold.

It appears to be the figurehead of one of the ships in that scene ... other instances are observable as the scene progresses.
