Aliens: Colonial Marines still alive, DS edition planned
Gearbox and Sega both reconfirm sci-fi-inspired shooter is still in development; handheld edition confirmed as well.
Following the February announcement of Aliens vs. Predator and the apparent indefinite suspension of Obsidian Entertainment's Aliens RPG project, doubts have surrounded Aliens: Colonial Marines. Announced by Sega in 2006, the game was being developed by Gearbox Software, the Texan studio behind this year's highly anticipated postapocalyptic action role-playing game, Borderlands. For the past several months, though, both developer and publisher have been mum on the status of the project, based on James Cameron's 1986 film.
Now, Gearbox and Sega have broken their silence, confirming that the first-person shooter is far from dead. "Aliens: Colonial Marines is indeed still coming as we've never said anything otherwise," a Sega rep told GameSpot this morning. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford also confirmed that the game, previously announced for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, remains at his studio.
"We know people care about the project and want to know more," Pitchford told GameSpot. "This is very exciting for us because we care tremendously about the project ourselves. However, since the project was originally announced, we haven't announced any status changes and we decided a while ago to try to ignore the rumors and speculation that we've seen come out about it. We prefer instead to focus on our objectives and our craft of game-making."
A rep for Gearbox echoed Pitchford's comments, saying the reason Aliens Colonial Marines had dropped from view was that the studio was focused on development and promotion of Borderlands, due out this fall. The rep also confirmed reports that a DS version of the game was also in development at another studio. Sega reps, however, declined to comment on the handheld edition of the game.
