Aliens: Colonial Marines still alive, DS edition planned

Gearbox and Sega both reconfirm sci-fi-inspired shooter is still in development; handheld edition confirmed as well.

Following the February announcement of Aliens vs. Predator and the apparent indefinite suspension of Obsidian Entertainment's Aliens RPG project, doubts have surrounded Aliens: Colonial Marines. Announced by Sega in 2006, the game was being developed by Gearbox Software, the Texan studio behind this year's highly anticipated postapocalyptic action role-playing game, Borderlands. For the past several months, though, both developer and publisher have been mum on the status of the project, based on James Cameron's 1986 film.

Now, Gearbox and Sega have broken their silence, confirming that the first-person shooter is far from dead. "Aliens: Colonial Marines is indeed still coming as we've never said anything otherwise," a Sega rep told GameSpot this morning. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford also confirmed that the game, previously announced for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, remains at his studio.

"We know people care about the project and want to know more," Pitchford told GameSpot. "This is very exciting for us because we care tremendously about the project ourselves. However, since the project was originally announced, we haven't announced any status changes and we decided a while ago to try to ignore the rumors and speculation that we've seen come out about it. We prefer instead to focus on our objectives and our craft of game-making."

A rep for Gearbox echoed Pitchford's comments, saying the reason Aliens Colonial Marines had dropped from view was that the studio was focused on development and promotion of Borderlands, due out this fall. The rep also confirmed reports that a DS version of the game was also in development at another studio. Sega reps, however, declined to comment on the handheld edition of the game.

why are they focusing on the soso looking Borderlands when they have one of the biggest IP"s out there especally when a rival company are also making one, this company are losing thier grip,it will flop just like the long delayed dissappointingly bland BIA and everybody will buy AVP instead, great management dumbf*cks

I have been waiting for this game all to long, but it looks like it'll be worth it.

All "Alien" fans be warned, there is a rumor going around from a very reliable source that 20th century fox is trying to remake the first Alien movie, knowing how the AVP franchise has been going you can only imagine what the movie would be like.

after all this time - jerking fans around - these games had better be worth the $70 - $80 that they're gonna want out of everybodies pockets when and if they ever do come out.

What I saw posted on the gamestop page for this was that it was coming out on the last day of December... and AVP was coming out January 19th... Just wanted to tell all of you guys that.

@TWayne1020, I fully agree, a game like this is way better 1st person. My buddies and me all grew up loving the movies, how awesome is it going to be to play it co-op over xbox live? Pulse rifles, smart guns and the blip of the motion tracker? Two words: Freakin' awesome!

It's great this is coming out, with the markets flooded with FPS games (many of which are actually real good), hopefully they can build some innovative elements into the game and capture the tension of the film, but I'm sure I'll buy it regardless.

WHOO-HOO!!! I'm really looking forward to this game. The movie has to be one of my all-time favorites. I really hope they can capture at least some of the mood and feelings and give us 80's kids a thrill.

lol @ Hillsy's comment. Aliens probabaly has some of the greatest one liners in the movie industry. The first 3 films in the franchise were incredible and deserve a game to do them justice. I hope this will be the one. "Let's roooooooock!"

Modern sci-fi movies are pathetic, for the most part. No one makes great movies like Aliens anymore. Except maybe James Cameron himself, and I'm expecting Avatar to be the sci-fi movie of the decade.

Great film is Aliens, still holds up well today.

A DS version? Really? I'll pass. I'll stick with the PC/360/PS3 versions.

It's been ages since I heard anything about this one, but intially the idea sounded fantastic. As 'plm3d basic' said, it's interesting how they seemed to have pushed the AVP 3 game ahead of the Colonial Marines one. And yes, it is a fps with co-op (think it ws originally intended to be online multiplayer). Should be good when it eventually comes out. 'It's Game Over man! Game over!' The 80's ruled : )

Sounds like a lot of you are confused about what this game is really about, not surprising since gameinformer's coverage was years ago. It's not an rpg, not a doom style shooter, but a 4 player co-op shooter. Think left 4 dead or republic commando with Aliens! Excited now? Your welcome.

I wonder how they'll try to distinguish this game from the AVP 3 game by Rebellion which would include all three classes of gameplay characters.

YES!!! About time, big Alien fan, i was scared that it got the axe but this is good to hear, Its looking more likely that 2010 is going to be a good year for Aliens with two games coming out.

And Kweeni....there was two Aliens games being made, one was a rpg, the other was being made at the same time i think which was the fps..but i think that one got the axe.

I love this part "we decided a while ago to try to ignore the rumors and speculation that we've seen come out about it. We prefer instead to focus on our objectives and our craft of game-making."
this shows that this company cares about what they are making, and believe that what they are making will be a huge success and i personally do not doubt that, with an attitude like that, it shows us that they care about the future people, gamers, hard core gamers and everyone else that will play the game. developers and video game companies do not have to pay attention to us on our eager for the game to come out, they should and have to pay attention to our comments about what we want from the game, and the experience we expecting to receive from the video game itself, not when and date we want the game.
