After Bethesda Softworks' less-than-ideal launches of Fallout 3's previous downloadable content Broken Steel and The Pitt, the company hopes to get it right tomorrow with the release of its newest add-on pack, Point Lookout. Point Lookout will be the fourth expansion to Fallout 3 and is available tomorrow on the PC and Xbox 360 for $10 (800 Microsoft points).

As outlined in GameSpot's hands-on preview, players begin the expansion by meeting a ferryman in the southern end of Capital Wasteland. Players are taken to Point Lookout, a swampland filled with mutated inbred hillbillies, a mysterious hi-tech mansion, and raider cultists. The game is targeted at players over level 17 and offers weaponry that's a step backward from the laser-driven technology that dominates the second half of the original Fallout 3 game.

Fallout 3 isn't over when players have survived their foray into Point Lookout. A fifth expansion, the alien-abduction-themed Mothership Zeta is expected to come in late July. As previously announced, Bethesda will package all five expansions into the retail release of Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, which is due out in October.

Don't worry I definitely wasn't targeting that at you. But yes I agree, people will never be satisfied.

Aha, I didn't realise that (Fallout 3 is my first Bethesda game). I guess people will never be satisfied. Thanks for letting me know though.

@kavadias1981 "Can I just say that I agree with a lot of you about the level 20 cap. It hardly seems worth fighting anything after that point and even though I heard that they did it to basically stop you from becoming indestructible and god-like, they could have increased the levels and abilities of the enemies along with you, like in Final Fantasy 8. That would have balanced things out and it makes the game last another 50 hours or so. An odd design move on Bethesda's part, I must say."

It's because 80% of these fools played Oblivion, and were the people to complain when they realised enemies leveled up as you did. They complained and said "oh, I want to have to work at a certain level to be able to know I can fight a certain monster, but they took that away from me! Waaaah! Bethesda, you better not do this for Fallout 3!

So yes, they didn't, now everyone complains.

Surprise surprise it only took 3 hours to complete.
I even managed to find all the areas on the map without trying to get the Achievement. For something that was meant to be 1/5th the size of the original area it's fairly disappointing.
    Great story, crappy rewards too.

I'll wait a week or two before getting this, just to make sure it isn't borked by Microsoft (again).

For those who want to level higher, you need the PC version so you can use the console code to raise your maximum level to something you'll never get to, like 100.

"The game is targeted at players over level 17 and offers weaponry that's a step backward from the laser-driven technology"

Wait, so STILL no character advancement for those of us in lvl20-ish? I'm tired of still wearing the same damn tesla armor and A3-21's plasma rifle for the last 40 hours of my total 60 hours (I checked), that's what I loved about Oblivion, the joy of becoming slightly more powerful, in Fallout the raiders stay at lv4 throughout the entire game so even looting them at high levels is a waste of time.

I'd pay a 100$ for an ACTUAL level increase in Fallout, not just "change-a-single-value-change-which-can-be-done-in-seconds-on-the-PC-version", I'm talking about new kinds of enemies in the Wasteland, brand new equipment etc.

There was just so much more play time and customization in Oblivion, what with enchantments and armor that wasn't just "suit + hat"!

They should also make a new capital city, I loved just walking around, stealing from a few houses and discovering quests in the Imperial City, and before you say that there are "not enough people in FO3 to make a city", according to lore "New California Republic (NCR)" has around 700.000 people

I'm with you dude. That's the only thing that bugs me about the game. And like you said, you DO level up relatively quickly. I'm actually going to restart my character because I used the free level perk and wasted a level perk. So SADLY I'm gonna restart the whole thing so I won't have missed a perk I really wanted to get. Although I DO like the guy's thing where he said they'll have mission perks. If I finish missions and gain perks, that'd be awesome since you can't get most of them with the stupid level cap.

Man, they keep hitting us with these DLC expansions and, being the Fallout 3 fan that I am, it's really hard to hold out for the GotY Edition in October.

They really made the leveling system too easy. That might be a boon for more casual gamers, but it kinda ruined it for those looking for a challenge. They should make it so that the rate XP is gained decreases when you raise the difficulty level. Or increasing the XP needed to level up. Or give you perks every other level and double the level cap.

No new level cap eh? I suppose I won't be buying it then. I've barely even started Broken Steel and I've been level 30 for quite some time now. Honestly it doesn't take very long to level up if you explore a lot. I suppose I won't be getting the spaceship one either if they don't raise the cap on that one too.

@Niccara - You're right, those bugs have forced me to have to restart both of them at least once, but the story, the weapons, the characters, the atmosphere, the dialouge, and just about everything else (with the exception of the graphics) are superior .

@drhatchet - Have you even played the first two? The ending of 3 was pointless and rushed, especially if you had our big green friend as your follower, who refuses to help because it's "your destiny." I'd rather give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it was a time limitation or some kind of interference then actually believe that's the best they could think of.

It may be different for Fallout 3, but with the GOTY editions of Oblivion, you still had to install the expansion content to your hard drive. It will likely be the same, and you won't save hard drive space.

"This DLC is such a ripoff. You're paying $10 for 4-5 (being generous here) hours of extra gameplay. No thanks. Rinse and repeat for the 5 "expansions"...

It's bad enough the ending to Fallout 3 sucked hard, but they make you pay another $10 just to get a better ending? Again, no thanks. You won't be getting my money."

They thought the original ending was appropriate for a Fallout game (they all end similarly). Also, this dlc leaked and some people got it early, and they said it adds area roughly "1/5 to 1/3 the size of the wasteland" plus a large number of new weapons and enemies (only a few enemies are reskins). Throw in the new quests (and the large number of freeforms that were mentioned) and it is well worth the $10. You get more for your money with this dlc than with map packs from halo/gears for the same price (typically three maps that share meshes and take very little to develop in comparison), if you wana argue its too expensive.

@andyrobbedyou, Nah another level cap increase would'nt work, If they did they will have to make enimes even stronger than Overlords and Albinos while our combat skills stay the same at 100, so basicly a level cap increase will only make things much harder.

@phudabulah Don't worry. They'll be just fine without your money.

For me, I'm fantastically excited about this. Fallout 3 is a massive game in a massive environment. I've played through the original game 4 times and I come upon new things every time, and that's before DLC. All of the DLC has been fantastic except for Operation Anchorage. Even so, you do get a pretty easy couple of extra levels, and stealth armor, among other things.
