Wolfenstein delayed two weeks

Raven Software's supernatural shooter pushed back to week of August 17 for a simultaneous worldwide launch.

Wolfenstein fans have waited six years for a new installment in the supernatural World War II first-person shooter series. Now Activision has confirmed they'll have to wait a couple weeks more.

Nazi warlocks--because normal Nazis aren't evil enough.

"In order to facilitate a simultaneous global release window for id Software's Wolfenstein, Activision has realigned the game's release date for the week beginning August 17," a representative with the publisher told GameSpot.

In May, the publisher announced an August 4 release date for the new Wolfenstein on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Developed by Raven Software (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Singularity), Wolfenstein drops players into the army boots of B.J. Blazkowicz, who is once again sent behind enemy lines to thwart Hitler's occult ambitions. For this go-around, players will be able to fight fire with fire, using the power of a sought-after artifact to combat Hitler's own freakish army of evil.

    I'm definetly not the biggest Wolfenstein fan, but when you see Id on the box, you know its something to behold. I am going to get this as soon as it gets out!!!

George:I was gonna, it does look pretty cool and has favorable reviews, and it's probably a lot of fun to play, but those lying bastards changed the release date, and that's absolutely unacceptable, so no, I'm not buying it.

    Actually I think the delays could be a good thing, because then Raven will have some more time to make Wolfenstein a better game and show the haters that Wolfenstein is still awesome, I am definitely going to buy this game for the Xbox 360. I don't mind all of the supernatural stuff, the iron sights, or the regenerating health system, I think those were some pretty good ideas to incorporate into this Wolfenstein game. Also being able to ugrade both your powers and weapons sounds pretty cool to me.

    Doesn't look too bad... RTCW is one of the best singleplayer (and multiplayer) games of all time imho (as is Wolf ET).

    BUT, I think I have to agree with raahsnavj on this one. It seems this occult stuff has done steroids and gone over the top. And to put in into the multiplayer part of the game.. hmm. Doesn't feel right...
    When I think of Wolftensteins multiplayer, I think of machineguns, Thomsons and MP-40's... not "Nazi Jedis".

    IS this game a remake of the original Wolfenstein 3D? Because they released a comic book-style promo video a little while a go for this game, but the video reminded me of the original game, where BJ had a chaingun and fought mecha-hitler again.

    i seen the Trailer for this in the Prototype Game why did they Blur the Nazi Symbols prototype is an 18 Game look Cool though

    C'mon, guys! It's Wolfenstein! U.S. Army Ranger William "B.J." Blazkowicz and Serious Sam (a.k.a. Duke Nukem's cousin) are all we got left!
    "Remember the Ala-Duke!" All I need to ring me in is an "M" rating for this game, hot Nazi babes w/ big boobs in skintight catsuits, and awesome spooky soundtrack!

    yeah, i feel this franchise is a bit played out. too many oddities with the launch of this title too are making it more difficult for me to be interested. i'm still open to see how others like and if it stacks up i'll certainly pick it up.

    RTCW was one of the most fun games I have ever pIayed. Whether you are in the game singIe-pIayer or against a bunch of other gamers onIine great fun. Other's saying that "kiIIing Nazis is tired out now" can pretty much bIame CoD and MoH are the reason for this. Putting games out year after year. Wofenstein was maybe the first game that made you kiII Nazis. Id didn't pour out WWII games year after year Iike CoD and MoH. Id has been doing this way before those games were thought of.

    @nappan: yeah. I wasn't trying to counter your argument. The quoted lines just made me think that a strategy game specifically dealing with the problems caused by invading someone else's country/planet and dealing with a fanatical insurgency that ignores the good things that you do in the country could make for an interesting and educational gameplay mechanic. I just thought you hit on a good idea.

    You are right about Nazis making good enemies. Hideously evil regime there. But there are a LOT of games that let you kill them. If you are going to make Nazis the enemy, you need to bring something new to the table or people will stick with their old Nazi killing games.

    I do slightly disagree with you about the difference between Nazis and the Taliban. In how many WWII games are you killing Hitler Rommel or concentration camp guards? For the most part, you are fighting German kids who believed the lies that their government fed them. WWII started with Hitler sending troops in Polish soldier uniforms across the border to fire back into Germany, thus making the invasion of Poland justifiable as self-defense.

    @starbead: Yeah, the gameplay concept works, but not in the context of hunting down people who, in a direct conflict, lose. Of course, if it's a sci-fi or fantasy setting, you could argue that's already been done. Some games have let you use a mixture of assasination and diplomacy as a means of victory instead of outright conflict or peace. However, my comment was more in the vein of condemning a statement that someone would prefer to be pretending to blow away x, y, or z group instead of Nazi Zombies.

    I mean, The Nazis could have taken over Europe and more. The people who call themselves "The Taliban" can't even take over Afghanistan. The fundamental threat just ins't there, and on a personal level, I don't think anyone really believes that the majority of "taliban" fighters are supertrained fanatics. The leaders are, sure, but I'm guessing the majority are people living in a region that has been WRECKED by decades of warfare, internal and external and by proxy. For all the insane **** they do, it's just not EVIL the way that people living decent lives who then in turn round up MILLIONS of people, gas them, burn them, and generally process them like machinary.

    The former is misguided, cruel, and wrong. The latter is just plain evil.

    Oh, yeah. Wolfenstein.

    It just never grabbed me. I've seen a few pictures and videos, but nothing ever made me think "Must own this game!". I am a picky, demanding FPS player. I admit it. If I just want to run around shooting stuff, I stick with Unreal Tournament for the most part. If I am going to buy a FPS I expect something more from it. I love FPS/RPG hybrids. Loved Bioshock (even though it was light on the RPG side). I just haven't seen anything about Wolfenstein that differentiates it from the myriad of available shooters. Just my opinion.

    As for the delay, it could be tied to the fact that a lot of the comments I've seen about the game from the community essentially translate as "Meh." Note that the new release date is one day after Quakecon ends. It looks like the bump may have been to give the game a little bigger publicity jolt and to release it while the ink is still drying on Quakecon coverage (for the younger readers, "ink" is a substance that can put color onto paper. The ink/paper combo was the most common way of getting news for years. Expressions involving ink being wet imply the the story is really new. This parenthetical aside is either a community service on my part or I am just feeling really old today.)

    I think that there could actually be a good game built around that idea. It wouldn't work as an FPS, but a strategy game that took into account the difficulties of fighting evil, evil people in someone else's sovereign nation (Iraq or Afghanistan) and having to rebuild the country while being despised by the population as unwelcome invaders could work in a strategy game. It probably wouldn't work as a contemporary game, but sci-fi has a long history of examining contemporary world problems through the lens of fantastical conceits.

    @kvan33: Now that statement I agree with (minus the apology). You have nothing to apologize for, you're just expressing your belief regarding a game. I HOPE it won't stink... the record of the dev is good, but as you said the screenshots and video has not been overwhelmingly attractive. I'll say this, I'm going to wait for both a metascore and some trusted GS non-critic reviews before I buy it.

    I can't wait, played nearly every id game. But the only complaint I have is that the graphics look quite dated. I mean really, id, you're using graphics that looked sub-par 4 years ago.

    I was hoping that Wolfenstein would come out on August 4th, but now the fans will have to wait until August 18th (In North America), but I can wait until then, I liked Return to Castle Wolfenstein for the PC and Xbox as well as Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, so this game should be fun. I bet it will get a 8.0 to 9.2 for sure you can count on that, but I will want to see how it turns out first before buying.

    You know, if they do this right it COULD be the sort of spiritual successor to both the Wolfenstein series AND the Heretic/Hexen gameplay. I wouldn't mind slinging magic in an FPS rather than more guns. More guns... and more guns. How is it that such mechanics are so often absent when they'd be most welcome?

    @SecularSage: Good point. However that really does go to why a demo or reviews are so critical here. This is a game that may well be tons of fun in spite of being derivative or graphically mediocre. I wouldn't mind that, and yeah, RTCW was just fantastic at the time (before WWII was pounded into the ground by other games).

    That said, I'm still skeptical based on what I've seen, but hopeful based on the source.


    @kvan33: It's called "suspension of disbelief". Let me get this straight... you don't have an issue with slowing down time in terms of believability, or Nazi Zombie Warlocks... you're worried about SUPPLY LINES?! Come on, if this game stinks, it won't be the shopkeeper mechanics that kill it, and time control is FUN. It's not original, but it is fun if it's not the ONLY mechanic being banked on by the dev.

    I have yet to play a game by Raven Software that isn't a ton of fun. Their games aren't always the most original or inspired, but they definitely understand what makes a game exciting to sit down and play.

    Also, I think it's worth pointing out that Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the Xbox was one of the finest Xbox Live titles you could play.

    I love FPS and the RTCW, but this game looks bland and derivative. Come on, slowing time is no longer a gimmick. It's a cliche. Upgrading weapons is fine, but who is BJ buying the upgrades from? The shop keeper from RE4? This just smells like a cash in.

    im tired of ppl talking about Wolfenstein as a letdown, as shooter fan i know it will be enjoyable, n being an ID game i KNOW it will be a good one, this will be a 80+, i think the gameplay videos r great n the weapons looks sweet. ill get it 4 sure

    People need to STOP talking about Bioshock 2. We all know we're going to get a better product for it... but... but... oh man it's so hard knowing a great game is nearly 2 more years away. Every time I hear that title now, I think I die a little inside, despite KNOWING that they're making the best decision for the consumer.

    @godsuki: Wolfenstein is probably the ONLY game in which it's still fun to turn Nazis into a thin red mist. As you say, it's been done a LOT... but it's an easy group for devs to pick and avoid critique. At least here, in Wolfenstein, that IS the actual backstory. Remember, this is hardly a "WWII Historical Shooter".. We're talking about nazi zombie warlocks lol.

    As for shooting "commies" or "Talibans"... good news! You can join the armed forces and within months, you'll be doing the REAL thing. Better yet, you won't be killing "commies" since the cold war is... over, and frankly I thought we got over hating people for their political affiliations? Oh... and since most of the "Talibans" that I assume you're referring to (apart from the actual word "Talib") = Al Queda and such... which would be great except for one little detail...


    Once you kill the leaders do you really think you'd enjoy blowing away people who, outside of the influence of truly sick people would NOT be at our throats to begin with? That'd be a short game. Boom, kill a few leaders, and then what... spend the rest of the time trying to rebuild infrastructure? Good game! I'll stick to blowing away "generalized" ethnic groups and nazis. Oh... and aliens. They want to burst out of our chests! They must be killed...

    I'm hugely skeptical about this game.. more every time I see a screenshot or footage. It looks like the devs went off the rails with the concept, and gave short shrift to graphics. As raahsnavj intimated, until review are out this is one to be wary of I think.

    2 weeks? They should delay it another 2 years and remake it with a whole new engine and better concept and gameplay. Nothing special about this game. Game looks outdated in everything from graphics to gameplay. Shroud looks like spirit walk from Prey but at least that game had the addition of wall walking. This looks more like Quake 4 but in a WW2 setting.

    It was ok to have the nazi's dipping into the occult and such, but this one looks too over the top for me. Who knows though, maybe the reviews will prove different and I'll have to check it out.
