Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising dropping in October

Codemasters’ much-delayed squad-based shooter sees worldwide release confirmed for this autumn.

Gamers who have been looking forward to Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, the sequel to the critically acclaimed Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, have had to endure a very long wait. Originally announced back in 2003, the title was subject to delays following Ubisoft takeover rumours and was then pushed back to spring 2006. The game surfaced again at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, with the hopes of a release date for later this year.

Codemasters has now revealed that the game will be hitting shelves on October 6 in the US; on October 8 in mainland Europe, Pacific Asia, and Canada; and finally on October 9 in the UK. The game will be available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

The game takes a realistic approach to shooters and lets players take command of a marine, a helicopter pilot, a special forces member, and a tank commander battling against the Chinese military. There will also be a variety of vehicles and equipment for players to use alongside their squad.

The game will also feature a full-on story mode complete with "a believable and dramatic storyline." There will also be a variety of online modes, and a co-op mode that's available online and offline. Codemasters has released a new Armoury trailer to accompany the announcement, which can be viewed below. Also, be sure to check out GameSpot's latest hands-on for more on the game.

Flash Player 9 is required to watch this video.

Codemasters says there is no splitscreen so by offline co op im guessing they mean system link right? or did gamespot mess up?

It's like a hardcore and so, more tactical battlefield.
Nothing wrong with that. Approach the objective anyway you want but it won't be forgiving for a bad decision.

Forhekset how do you what kind of game this is or even is the game good. You can't have played yet so you might want to wait until it comes out. By the way ARMA 2 is not so good you is it because it isn't a realistic what comes to teamwork there have non! Served 1 year in the army so I should know.

Hmmm... How are you so sure, Mr. forhekset? I have my reservations with Bohemia out of the picture, but it does carry the name and should deserve it's day in court. At any rate, negative-nellies be darned, I think it'll be just fine.

Although ARMA2 is almost identical to the original OFP in almost every way besides cosmetic changes, and is still the buggy piece of crap it was back then, I still love it. Yes, I love ARMA2. Can't beat sandbox editor quasi simulation fun.

This game will be nothing like the original, and nothing like ARMA. It's annoying that it even warrents a comparison because it has the same name, since it will be completely different. And since they're not trying to make the same sort of game, I just don't care. Another modern shooter. Woopee.

i would like to reserve judgement on what the outcome will be of this opflash sequel, but i have a pretty good idea of how it will turn out. it's apparent that the opflash community followed bohemia interactive with their developments of arma and arma2. from what i've seen so far, there is nothing to suggest that this will be more appealing than arma2. the visuals and flow of the game seem to be way off from what would be ideal in an opflash sequel. whether it's great or not, i'm most likely going to buy it anyway.

Yeh well I agree with jeffkjtj I think funko is wrong. I don't care how many people give me thumbs down this is going to be brilliant. Arma 2 isn't anywhere near as good looking, and doesn't have any redeeming features.

funko are you serious? arma 2 is god-awful and runs like garbage. have you even played the original OFP1??? it is too legit to quit. even comparing those two games is heresy, nerd-burglar.

If you want the real ofp sequel get ARMA 2. OFP2 is just gonna be a battlefield knockoff. Lame

It's been so long since OFP1... Let's hope all those years haven't gone to waste, and they haven't buggered up a potentially good sequel, eh? Just try not to focus on making the game popular, Codemasters... Focus on making a good sequel, and don't base yourselves around popularity.

anyone else think the sound is off on this video? almost seems like they mixed the sound from a different video to this footage.

I need more gameplay footage. It looks like QUAKE with the name "OFP" slapped to it. The team that made this game NEVER made an FPS in their lives, and this is a fact. The grass doesn't even show up 10 feet from the player. You can't fly a plane, so no laser designator fun like you could in the real OFP. ARMAII's multiplayer (only) has been amazing since its release. If "OFP2: DR" can pull it off, fine - but I'm having my extreme doubts - they are making this game to appeal to the mainsteam audience - and the mainsteam audience plays Call of Duty, Counter Strike, and Team Fortress... We'll see...

OFP2: DR better have add-on's too, an add-on community. That's what made OFP...OFP. Thats how the game survived, thats how the community came together and became so strong. The community became strong through a developer who stayed in close contact with their fans in their forums and even provided add-ons of their own.

yea, the blur effects and recoil on the iron sight view looked very realistic, and the lighting effects, explosions and draw distance look absolutely amazing. I'm still wondering how much of what they are showing is actual IN GAME footage, and not just cinemas using the game engine. Or if what is show in this trailer is Pc or console. They're been sketchy about showing actual gameplay for this game. Time to let us see it actually being played.

Im without a doubt going to buy this game, maybe instead of MW2 but thats probably because I was a Marine for 5 years and my job was working on Huey and Cobra helicopters so this game strikes all the right cords for me. Plus I'm ready for something new instead of the generic FPS.

Also, when are we getting a straight-up gameplay vid, or is their already one? I'd rather just watch 20 minutes of a non-developer gamer (someone who's a good player, though) play it, without any special effects, cut-outs or commentary (maybe a bit).

It seems that all we're getting is heavily edited videos which kind of makes me think that they don't WANT us to see it.

As much as I want to love this, I'm waiting for what the overall consensus of it is after release. Maybe get it a few weeks after. I have a feeling that this is either going to be amazing, or it's going to suck massively, but only time can tell.

I loved Bad Company for it's sound effects and feeling of being in a squad - if this has that sort of feeling I'm in there... I love the fact your moving in as one unit, working together, rather going Rambo in the Call of Duty series. Not to say the COD series is bad, it's actually very fun, but I prefer the game tilting towards the realisitic/simulator game type.

Can't wait to see all the available weapons and some more details about the actual gameplay.
