Ashes Cricket 2009 coming to the crease August 7

Follow-up to 2007's Brian Lara International Cricket to come to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii as the fourth Ashes test gets under way.

It has been a busy week for Codemasters, having already announced release dates for Dirt 2 and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. Now, as the real-life Ashes takes place at Lords, the publisher has announced that Ashes 2009 will be released simultaneously on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii on August 7.

Ashes 2009 is being developed for the Xbox 360 and PC by Melbourne-based Transmission Games, which was behind the less-than-well-received Brian Lara 2007 Pressure Play on the PSP. The game is promised to feature "all the drama" of the Ashes series, as well as regular test matches, one-day internationals, and 20-over games. There will be 18 stadiums from 12 countries, including The Melbourne Cricket Ground, The Gabba, and all the venues for the 2009 Ashes series. The Wii version is being developed in England by Gusto Games, the studio responsible for the 2006 and 2007 console ports of the Championship Manager series, as well as 2006’s disappointing ProStroke Golf - World Tour.

Newcomers to cricket will be pleased to find tutorial modes presented by real-life cricketing legends Sir Ian Botham and Shane Warne, who will also be providing commentary for the game alongside Ian Bishop and infamous outspoken ex-England captain Tony Greig. The 360, PS3, and PC versions of the game will feature full online multiplayer, with the Wii edition only having local multiplayer.

The game includes official licences for the Ashes name, as well as the English and Australian teams, and Codemasters has released a new video to show off the licence featuring the heroes of the recent Cardiff test, James Anderson and Monty Panesar, as well as captain Andrew Strauss and the enigmatic Kevin Pieterson. The Baggy Green end is being held up by Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, and Mitchell Johnson. Interested gamers can check out the video below or read GameSpot's latest hands-on.

FadeToBlack90: Cricket is a lot more popular in Australia then in Europe (only England plays cricket at a high level) so it should sell in Australia.

I realize cricket is pretty extreme, but is this going to sell outside of Europe? I mean, where I live if its not football (american) then people don't really care.

the video does look slightly dodgy even on the hd, but i really hope they make it as good as the 2005 on the xbox

the best bits about that game were the classic cricket scenarios and developing your player. they seem to have left those bits out of the last one which was a big disappointment

My family lives in St.Lucia and cricket/soccer are the big sports down there. I've tried to play it before...it's actually pretty fun and I usually don't care for the baseball/cricket type games. Either way, it's nice to see other sports getting a little love from the video game industry.

I wish EA made a cricket game with the fifa engine, that be awesome. Codemaster cricket games usually have really bad animations so hope this one is good.

Doubt that this game will come to the US. No one would really buy. This is more unpopular than "soccer" over here. I don't know much about cricket but would it kill them to have uniforms of different colors?

its sad that cricket games never get the visual glory that is taken for granted in a lot of games now.The mocap made the game look like a 2002 release

was interested, now thinking its just an ashes promotional tool. The gameplay just looks all wrong, the players are dead still then suddenly react at super-human speed, and when they do move it looks weird and un-human, hopefully theyve been concentrating on other areas of the game.

Hopefuly it's only a matter of time before codemasters realise there's 1:1 motion control, and in near future make you bat in first person view, and in the further away future, create the same thing but with graphics that dont hurt your eyes on the ps3.

I'm a big cricket fan and was thinking about buying this. That video put me right off though, it looked awful.

I'm definitely going to be waiting until I've read a couple of reviews and played a demo before buying this.
