What we heard: What Brett Favre's return to professional football was to the NFL, Blu-ray Disc's compatibility with the Xbox 360 is to the gaming industry. It's been half a year since the last salvo of 360/BD reports, erupting at that time thanks to a Sony "senior executive" telling British economic daily The Financial Times that the high-definition video-playback creator was in talks with Microsoft to integrate an internal drive into a new 360 SKU.

With Sony repeating its stance that it would be open to a BD-equipped 360, a position which was echoed by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, the company's games division was quick to proclaim that no such talks were currently taking place. Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for the Xbox 360, at the time said, "Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience."

A seemingly unequivocal statement, to be sure, but do Greenberg's words rule out an external add-on for Microsoft's media device? According to X-Bit Laboratories market sources, that answer is a resounding no. X-Bit is reporting today that Toshiba-Samsung has completed development on an external BD add-on for Microsoft's console. Toshiba-Samsung is a joint collaboration between Samsung Electronics and HD DVD pushers Toshiba Corp.

X-Bit's sources claim the external BD drive will fall in the $150-$200 range, and Microsoft may roll it out as early as this holiday to mitigate the PlayStation 3's HD video-playback advantage.

Though Microsoft was a staunch backer of Toshiba's HD DVD up until that format collapsed earlier this year, the publisher has also kept its eye trained on the future of digitally distributed content. Indeed, one of the headlining features of Microsoft's Xbox Live dashboard overhaul due later this fall is integration with Netflix, a service which will let XBL subscribers stream movies and TV shows from the online video rental company's database. It's worth noting, though, that Netflix's massive on-demand library is only available in standard definition.

The official story: Microsoft had not returned requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Microsoft has been clear in its position that online distribution will be its video-playback venue of choice, and there's no reason to believe this rumor holds any more water than the many that have come before it. As was seen with persistent rumors of Metal Gear Solid 4 arriving for the 360, repetition does not always equate to reality. Bogus.

    Just my opinion,

    Sony won the 'battle' but in the long run, Microsoft will win the 'war'.

    Blu-ray support for the 360 is probably a good thing provided it doesn't make our pockets too much lighter. But even still, if the add-on doesn't come, I don't think anybody who bought a 360 would care because, unlike PS3 sales, 99% of the 360 sales were by gamers [remember those?]. Besides the PS3 being a super-computer like thing, the gaming standard just doesn't live up. In my opinion, Sony made the PS3 to sell Blu-ray, not to make a gaming console. Now while 360 still stayed a gaming console, the bonuses were...well...only bonuses.

    I never saw how HD-DVD would make it, considering the awesome power of Blu-ray but I myself wouldn't go to buy either of them. Talking from a gamer's perspective, I was fine with DVD's for movies and DVD's for games. They were simple, cheap, no compromise in gameplay, and the movies were absolutely fine. People say the quality leap in Blu-ray from DVD can be compared to DVD from VHS. I honestly can't see that, VHS was crappy in all respects and DVD was a huge leap in all regards. Blu-ray on the other hand did little but add to an already worthy medium. The addition itself wasn't that great either. For the moment, people aren't willing to dish out extra to get one because it's just too high a price for too little a thing.

    As far as gaming consoles go, 360 won by a longshot. Games, accessories, the like are all tonnes cheaper and being gamers, that's just how we like it. PS3 just had too high a price for everything. It wasn't a gaming console, it was a home entertainment solution and even the 360 is catching up in that respect with the new HD download service. In the end, the PS3 serves little other than as a Blu-ray player and if you were a occasional gamer. The HD download service might seem absurd considering the internet capabilities of the majority of people out there but then again, the same people can't afford either the HD download service, or anything that's Blu-ray. Another fair comment is the fact that you have to save part's of games on the PS3 to be able to play them which, in my opinion, is just downright stupid. When I play a game, I want to be able to put the disc in, wait a minute or two for it to load, and get right into it, not wait for something that seems so unneccessary considering how much a Blu-ray disc can hold.

    It's a lot of spics and specs but in the end. Both consoles are great in their own context. Home entertainment for PS3, gaming for Xbox. But considering both are made originally as gaming consoles, 360 wins.

    Knowledge time Toshiba was the one that actually killed hd dvd. They were the first to back out. Next, Sony was the company that spearheaded not only the conception for Blu ray but put the most money into founding the blu ray association and holds the largest share 64% to be exact. So sure go ahead and by those blu ray addons and feed the PS3 global machine. Oh but wait they're not coming.

    if blu-ray is such an amazing format then answer this, why with virtually every PS3 game do yu have to install game data to the hard drive, you can boast the storage capacity of blu-ray all you like but us 360 don't have to install our games. and look at the case of bioshock, you have to instal about 3gb of data to play it on PS3 and there is virtually no loading time difference between that and the 360, what would yo rather pick. a console that you can put your disc in a play instantly with only having to have saves on your hard drive or a console with a supossedly amazing disc format, that dispite blu-ray's Huge storage capacity requires you to squanger gig's of hard drive space just to play a game - your choice.

    in this generation of consoles the 360 doesn't need the blu ray drive its too late into the generation, yes blu ray will probably be the future for game discs but it will take time for more developers to get to know how to code for it and the next Microsoft console will probably have a blu ray drive in it because Sony does not own all of the blu ray

    Also even if it was an add-on the 360's would be a bad deal 270 or 200 plus 200 already for the same price as a PS3. And at that price the PS3 is a far better deal with internet browser, Wireless, and free online (which is pretty decent 8/10 for the PSN)

    I think Sony owns 60 percent of the Blu-ray rights so if Pan or Sam or even Tobisha want to give a Blu-ray player to the Xbox360 Sony gets the finally word in. In addition Microsoft has to adment Blu-ray is the best for games or movies which they won't do. In short both are stubborn

    Blu-Ray isn't just a SONY thing. MS wouldn't be copying SONY by having a Blu-Ray option. Blu-Ray is owned by many company's and Sony is just one part of it. Now I think it would be pretty dumb to have a Blu-Ray drive BUILT-IN. For one thing they are far slower then the DVD drive the 360 currently has, so do you want your games loading up slowly? It also makes the console cost all that much more and for what? To watch movies which you can already do without it!!! Now a Add-ON is a different story. If you want to watch Blu-Ray movies on your console, then you can pay to have that option. Hell I would do it. I keep holding off on Blu-Ray, but if the drive came out for the 360 I'd get it for a few Blu-Ray's. It also makes it simple to hook up to my system as I only would have to plug it into the 360 and use it's existing connections unlike buying a Stand Alone which I really have no connections left for and would have to buy a expensive HDMI Switcher with built in Optical Switch built into also, or a normal HDMI switch and a new Surround sound Receiver with it's built in HDMI switching. Either way the stand alone Blu-Ray player is expensive, and a drive add-On would be the cheap way to go. The 360 not having Blu-Ray it's self doesn't hurt it. Hasn't made me one to buy one. Especially for the fact of Sony's Idiocy of leaving off a IR port. I'm not going 2 remotes. If it's not going to work with my Harmony 1000, I don't want it! There's also no PS3 Exclusives I want to play, so why buy one? I can live without Blu-Ray though.

    Say what you want about storage limitations/multi-disc games on 360 versus single disc Blu-ray games on PS3. I own them both, and I can change a disc faster than waiting for yet another installation on the PS3 (MGS4). What's the big difference? At the end of the day, it doesn't change the hardware performance of either console, and that's what really matters.

    WTF why the hell will Microsoft make a bluray player for the 360? Thats sonys stuff. Microsoft will just be stealing what is making the ps3 so good. They know they lost the console war, so they are now going to be losers and steal sonys bluray......dumb Bill Gates.

    I don't think Microsoft should make a Blu-Ray player for the 360.Maybe for their next console the 720 or whatever.Sony won and Microsoft lost.

    The 360 doesnt need a Blu-ray player for one reason - Its to noisey! I can't stand watching movies on my 360. I'll stick with a stand alone Blu-ray player.

    we 360 fans dont need a blu ray player its just a piece of crap player bult by sony they are mad cause there ps3 and blu ray players suck compared to our glorious xbox 360 we got over 3x speed thet the ps2 has and 6x power that the ps2 could ever get

    they don't deserve blu-ray, the way everyone dogz on the ps3 "my preferred system". open your eyes guys, xbox has reached it's limits with gears, no telling where blu-ray is going to take my our ps3's. give it time, you'll see

    I think that the 360 won't be getting a Blu-Ray player, but, I do think that the next wave of consoles will use Blu-Ray disks like the ps3. I am a 360 fanboy, but, I can tell that Blu-Ray is the future.

    If it wasn't for Blu-ray, I would have sold my PS3 a long time ago.If there does so happen to be a Blu-ray device add-on for the 360 and if it does fall in the $150-$200 price range, then I may opt to sell my PS3. I've just been waiting to see what games Sony has coming out and how soon they'll be here.Mine is collecting dust and selling it has crossed my mind thousands of times.If the PS3 was just a gaming device, it wouldn't have sold nearly as well as it did, so they were very smart to add that to the system.

    I hope Sony is smart enough to say no to microsoft. All i hear is Blu-Ray sucks from all xbox360 owners saying we dont need a blu-ray player. Even Xbox360's Head said to Epic games comment of needing a blu-ray player to make Gears of War3 "We are doing just fine with DVD and we will continue to use only DVD's" so go enjoy ur 7 discs of love instead of one simple Blu-ray. I own All systems Im allowed to talk trash =)

    I agree with HappyBB's view. Microsoft is a much bigger cooperation than Sony in every way. I don't think Microsoft lost to Sony through marketing. I think it's more like Microsoft gave up on HD-DVD long before everyone knew and decided to let Blu-ray win. Remember these are all cooperations and all they think about is profit so that they can keep going. There must have been a reason that made Microsoft just let HD-DVD go. Perhaps Microsoft decided their Xbox isn't going to be a movie player and let HD-DVD go while snatching all the PS exclusives into their console...

    Wow very original observation happybb. You are probably very correct, but if Microsoft did add the player then they would not be the #1 system now as they would have loss on the price front. Sony for example still gets nailed by fanboys and regular gamers alike for the high price. With a HD drive Microsoft would probably have been more expensive than the ps3. (judging it by the price of the systems at the time and simply adding 199 dollars for the drive...I doubt that they would have been able to make it any cheaper). I does not matter how much sony drops the price they will not loose the stigma of being "overpriced". Before Microsoft did the last price drop the price of the systems were almost identical, then you add on sony's bluray, larger hard drives, and more powerful processor and the xbox 360 was obviously the more expensive unit...but you still heard people saying that the ps3 was overpriced. Consumers as a group are so simple minded (i.e. global economy crisis)

    First of all, the guy at work is going to get ripped a new hole (probably at the taint). When sony announced their on-line video content and had it on the store that night he said Microsoft had did it the same way and that he was already downloading Netflix. Acording to this article that has not even happened yet and even if it had there is no hd content. Lame fanboy had to taint his honesty and character to make xbox sund better than ps3! (Just noticed that our society has made taint a homonym!).

    A Blu-Ray player add-on would be cool, because it would be less expensive than buying a stand-alone unit or PS3, but at the same time I won't hold my breath.

    Whether this is rumor or fact, bottom line is that both Microsoft and Sony have screwed up this generation! If you have both a PS3 and 360, or just one of them, I need not go into detail about how both companies have turned this generation into a console circus, what they have put us through, the deceptions, lies, and false promises, etc...! I have both, and in my opinion, haste makes waste, which is what both Microsoft and Sony are guilty of! Again, this is just my opinion, but I truly feel neither one of these companies had a good game plan for this generation's consoles/systems, and with both the PS2 and XBOX at it's peak, which I also own both, there was no need to rush into next generation, from either Microsoft or Sony, and should have waited an extra year or two before bringing out their next generation systems, with reliable hardware, solid game plan, keeping in mind that this would be a game console, which would be affordable, making multimedia optional, and giving these consoles to developers so they could and would be able to make games for, before putting them out on the store shelves! How many different SKUs have we seen from both companies, so far? How many more will we see before the next generation arrives, which at this rate I wouldn't doubt if it's as early as 2009 or 2010, at the latest?! Then, we have the developers for both the PS3 and 360, which have gotten lazy and completely unacceptable, by putting out games that have been greatly shortened, full of bugs/glitches, and for the most part, barely, if at all, properly tested, which make things fine with most people, because then they can download updates, patches, expansions, etc...! I'm a proud owner of the original XBOX and the PS2, but at this point and time, I can't lie and say I am proud of owning a PS3 and 360, as both have put me through hell and high water, and I honestly think it will get worse before it gets better! Mark my words, gaming will never be the same, as both Microsoft and Sony are hell bent on multimedia stuff, whether it's built in or as an add on, online profiting, and turning game consoles into watered down, cheaper PCs! No wonder both companies are in the red, and coming up with all these nonsense ideas, in hope of getting in the black and winning the console war, this generation! I don't even want to think about what both companies will come up with for the next generation, but I do believe the price tags will be astronomical! Being a scuba diver, the one golden rule is: Plan your dive, then dive your plan! Microsoft and Sony didn't plan their dive, and if they did, they didn't dive their plan! That's providing they even had a plan to begin with, which I don't believe either did, and if they did, it was a stupid plan! Totally unacceptable, especially for companies of this magnitude and wealth!!!

    I am gonna make some different comment. In my opinion, MS aided the demise of HD-DVD. If MS would install HD-DVD drives to every Xbox360 instead of optional add-on, then today the format will still live on! MS' support is definitely strong enough to go head-to-head against Sony, maybe more! Perhaps MS had little faith in HD-DVD in the beginning and the company wanted to play watch-and-then-move game so that its lack of active actions ultimately led to the defeat of the format.

    Microsoft is going to need Blu-Ray eventually unless they want to roll out games on 7 DVDs on the XBox 720 or whatever. So one of two things is going to happen...First...the Blu-Ray player is a big selling point for the PS3 so Sony would probably want to keep it to themselves..at least for the next year or two. Secondly...there are more 360 owners and Sony will make money off every Blu Ray player sold with a 360 so there will be a 360 Blu Ray player. If you ask me, since the DVD isn't dead, I don't think we'll see a Blu Ray player for the 360...Instead, the technology will be used for the next Xbox console.

    The 360 is going to get left behind at this rate. People WILL buy the PS3 simply for the Blu-Ray drive, I know several work colleagues who have for that reason alone! Sort yourselves out Microsoft, join the 21st Century and update your console!

    Ok , there is no way that an external BLu-ray drive hasn't been developed for the 360 .. just because microsoft would be stupid not to explose the possibility ...
    However the chances of it making it to retail?? .. well that is a slimmer chance .. it all depends on what MS want the 360 to be ... thinking myself they won't want to shift focus from the lucrative XBL movie downloads ... why give people a BR drive when they will make no money from subsequent purchases ? where as ever Netflix download MS takes a chunck.
    the only reason for the BR drive would be if people started buying the PS3 in large numbers .. and that's just not happpening right now.
    and anyways the longer they wait the cheaper it will be.

    For some reason Gravity is getting weaker I tested it Myself In my room and My head almost touched my ceiling. Months Ago I tested Gravity outside My House In my Backyard by Jumping and Gravity pulled me down Faster and Much Stronger.

    As you correctly say market share as a snapshot doesn't mean anything, by comparison for the transition of new to old, however...market share as a trend over time does, based on the same constants.

    The fact remains that over the same time and taking account market and population (which you must to do compare VHS to DVD to Blu-ray) it clearly shows that Blu-ray does not have nearly the market growth that DVD did.

    It's upsetting in a way, people in positions of "the know" really don't know anymore. And what is doubly disturbing is it's not that they are dumb, it's just that they have become political.

    Forget the issues, bet the statistical trends and win long term gains over short term profits.

    more rumors i will believe this when i see it. i don't think it will happen. I don't think microsoft will do anything that encorages blu ray sales myslef. i am certainly happy with dvd anyway. yes i have the hd dvd add on for 360 but i buy normal dvd mainly although i do buy some of the cheap hd dvd sometimes cause when it comes down to it i just wanna watch the movie i don't care what format it is. hd dvd and blu ray really isn't the big step up that dvd was from vhs. i man i hate watching vhs now but the point will never come where i hate watching dvd cause when it comes down to it dvd is very good quality.

    With the continued growth of Video Marketplace and new Netflix integration to come, this is seeming less and less likely. However I still find it to be a plausible possibility, even though I think it's a stupid choice for Sony. I think the PS3 being a Blu-ray player is a huge advantage for it's sales, and eventually that'll help with game sales for people who over time start buying games for it "since they have it for their Blu-ray player anyway".

    As for when it'd come out, even though I don't really think it will, at this point the very earliest is holiday of next year. Don't expect it any sooner then that if it ever does come out.

    DVD will fail just look at the current Blu Ray techniques about 2 months ago it was anounced that they've created a Blu Ray with +/- 500 gigabyte on wich you can write data on!!!

    Imagine this i (Anthe) own a 94 cm widescreen Sony Bravia lcd tv with 1080P support with an reiceiver that can handle DTS HD With offcourse the boxes and subwoofer off course But this isn't meant to be showing off like look what i got but more like imagine uncomressed sound uncompressed video data uncompressed extras, making off's, History of the movie etc.. all those stuff if you buy a dvd it's compressed for instance Lord Of The Rings.

    I'm not a very big fan of those movies but mi have the collecters edition Part 1 of those movies contained 5 discs because of all the extras.

    I Rather have 1 Blu Ray with an Nice artbook wich is also smaller then the thickness of an phonebook.

    So yes Blu Ray is doing great here in Europe our numbers here in the netherlands of Blu Ray selling are 30% better then the same release time during DVD.

    So i don't know how it is there in the states but here dvd is getting out of the stores even our video rental shops in Groningen are switching over pretty fast to Blu Ray.

    But then again this is Holland we have LCD TV action selling like when you buy an LCD TV for let's say 1000 euro's you get a free PS3 with it (for example)

    But then again our economics are a hell lot better then the US with their financial bankrupt system.

    I thought the first Blu-ray players were released in June of 06. That 2.38 million number is only 2 years, not 3. What were DVD sales like after 2 years?

    As for my PS2/360 comparison...it sounds to me like you're arguing that Blu-Ray can't succeed because DVD has too much of the market share. To me that's like saying the 360 couldn't compete because the PS2 had all the market share. Clearly the 360 is doing fine.

    Your kidding right, if blu-ray had the same amount of DVD movies blu-ray would win because they only have 1/4 amount of movies that DVDs have...

    Take into account population and market growth add in actual media sales, DVD is kicking the junk out of Blu-ray.

    And it's not hard to see why. VHS -> DVD (huge step) vs. DVD -> Blu-ray (minor yet more expensive step)

    So if you want to draw fair comparisons you have to do it VHS to DVD and DVD to Blu-ray.

    And like you love to do, you shoud do it for the same timeframe.

    Also how you think that equates to the 360 is doomed to fail is beyond silly even for you...
