Miis take stage in Wii World Tour

Activision's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock may have drawn a less-favorable reception from critics due to its comparatively limited instrument set, but it went on to dramatically outsell its most direct competitor, MTV Games' Rock Band. With Guitar Hero World Tour, the publisher has addressed that feature deficiency in a major way by introducing a five-pad drum set, karaoke tracks, and a robust song creator, among other additions.

With those features slated to arrive for all editions of the game, developer Vicarious Visions has a few Wii-specific tweaks up its sleeve. RedOctane representatives confirmed for GameSpot today that Guitar Hero World Tour on the Wii will include Mii integration in the new Mii Freestyle mode.

Featuring user-created Miis and designed to cater toward the Wii's broad audience, the Mii Freestyle mode acts as a way to ease in new gamers by "giv[ing] players the freedom to play what they want, when they want, while still providing some guidance." Not unlike Nintendo's Wii Music, the Wii Freestyle mode will also allow for players to "air drum" using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

As previously noted, World Tour will also improve over GHIII on the Wii by offering downloadable content. Further explaining how DLC will be delivered, the publisher noted that players will be able to browse, sort, sample, and download tracks through a new in-game Music Store.

Guitar Hero World Tour is expected to arrive on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii this fall. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

    It's funny to think of cute little Miis playing hard rock, but they should stay where they belong... in Wii Music...

    The "Mii thing" would be cool...if you could use the character customization to tweak their appearance. Still, it'd be cool if I could rock out to selections such as many of the songs from Majora's Mask, or any of the songs from Chrono Trigger or the Castlevania series.

    Who cares about the mii thing......I just can't wait for the downloadable content!!!!!!!!

    Hah, cool. I myself probabbly won't use a Mii, can't picture them on these venues and rocking to those lyrics, but at least they gave some tweaks to the younger gamers.

    And it's about time for DLC. I've had 1,000 Wii pts saved for months. SD support is nice too, my Wii is stuffed. >_>

    As for Nintendo themed DLC, the song creator/download service will deliver. It's rumored that Neversoft composed YYZ and Cliffs of Dover as sample songs, so I'd imagine we can make any Nintendo theme our hearts desire, and the best will end up high on the GH tune rankings for all to enjoy. Perks of having a Wii finally paying off.

    I mean I guess you never have something to lose when they give more options to the consumer like that,but in the end,Mii's are a joke,bubbly pieces of $%#$ that don't do anything,and don't try to defend them because you know it took Nintendo like 10 seconds to develop that #$%#.Miis are so easy to put in a game,that's why Nintendo made them,they are a cheap way to win over some peeps who are fooled into thinking that Miis are cute and fun...

    mrballistix, the wii version of World Tour is exactly the same as the Xbox360 and PS3 version, only with these extras. There will also be character customization in the wii version.

    DLC? Finally? Well, works for me. I don't know about the price tag for games like this and Rock Band, but at least they're adding features and such to justify the price more thoroughly. May pick this up after the inevitable price drops.

    I wonder if Wii will get Nintendo game based songs, like how 360 got Halo Theme and PS3 got God of War Theme. I'd love to see a Zelda or Metroid song done GH style!

    @Blanez90 & xblane:

    I've been following the IGN Wii team and their interviews with VV, and what I have been hearing from them is that the DLC will be able to be downloaded to and played FROM an SD card. So, VV appears to have discovered the way that Nintendo uses for SSBB to save to and play directly from the SD card for game play. Its been sounding ot me like that option has ALWAYS been there...what ISN'T is only the ability to play VC games from the SD card. But playing in game content from a card? Sounds like its pretty likely at this point!

    @Mardil: I meant in gameplay. EA used the Mii's just as a Player Icon. As for SEGA, I haven't played Mario & Sonic At the Olympic Games, so I had no idea.

  • Thebomb44

    Posted Aug 20, 2008 6:46 pm GMT

    I don't see what the big deal is, since there are already customizable characters. I still think it's great that the Wii is again getting some tweaks to use it to full advantage, like GH3's Wii speaker implementation, but I'm still not going to be getting it on Wii over 360.

    So, why is it that Harmonix, the original brains behind this series and by far the "innovator" couldn't get DLC onto the Wii Rock Band, demanding an HDD from Nintendo, yet Vicarious Visions can get it done?

  • Blanez90

    Posted Aug 20, 2008 5:51 pm GMT

    @Aubinstein

    2 things

    1. A hard drive. Downloading like 3 songs then deleting them to get another 3 songs is retarded.

    2. Achievements. Call me stupid, but they have become a main reason for me to play games.

  • whitepaul

    Nice addition to Mii functionality but the Miis are a system that had alot of potential but (as with the Wi-Fi and Message board) was implemented in too limited a fashion to be more than a brief amusment.

  • aubinstein
