With its massive economy, burgeoning population, and vibrant culture, Brazil is a major player on the world stage. However, the fact it makes headlines for having massive festivals, topless beaches, and lawless favelas, has given it a reputation--many of which its citizens don't feel it...

However, the fact it makes headlines for having massive festivals, topless beaches, and lawless favelas, has given it a reputation--many of which its citizens don't feel it deserves--for being a place where anything goes.

Well, almost anything.

Today, the Associated Press reports that a Brazilian state has banned Rockstar Games' controversial juvenile delinquency sim Bully. According to the service, Judge Flavio Rabello has ordered the suspension of all sales of the game in Rio Grande do Sul, the southern most province of the massive South American country.

"The aggravating factor is that everything in [Bully] takes place inside a school," said Rio Grande do Sul state prosecutor Alcindo Bastos. "That is not acceptable."

Bully was released on the Xbox 360 and Wii in March, with the original PlayStation 2 version shipping in the US last year. In Brazil, the game is reportedly mainly distributed by JPF magazine, an attorney for which said the publication had not been informed of the judge's ruling.

US Rockstar reps also declined to comment on the ban to the AP, perhaps taking comfort in the fact their biggest game in years, Grand Theft Auto IV, has been cleared for release in the US and the UK.

    People here in Brazil care much about what games are allowed or not... Counter-Strike has already been banned here, it's so stupid... They should fight piracy instead of banning awesome games just because they allow KIDS to buy what they shouldn't.

    i mean just because its more like a m doesn/t mean it is i tried fable and it was m and guess what? out of the whole game i heard only 1 bad word and the volince was fun volince not influence volince just a fun game kind of volince its ok to have games such as bully because when ppl grow up there gonna hear it any way im only almost a teenager and guess what i only say 4 to 5 bad words a year! so judges you made not a very good decision i say

Tell me where to find it, a beach full of women doing topless, where's that? "massive festivals"? As I remember we got 4 famous ones: Carnival in February, kind of a hill-billy party in June (Festa Junina), Christmas (have you ever heard of that?) and New Year's Eve (that's new for you?). And Brazil isn't an anarchy, I think that you, ignorant, should go to school before posting anything.

    Lets go into the facts: People that don't like to risk their credit cards over the net ( Buying on Steam/eBay ), what they do to buy games? Go to shops. CS and the other RPG game that was banned was like the best selling games, every time I've gone to shops that sold those games, I used to always see people buying one of the games or both. So let's see, 40% buy original, 40% buy pirate copy, 10% buy on Steam/Online shops. Now? 90% buy pirate copy, 10% buy on Steam/Online shops.

    haha, this is stupid. People like who haven't played the game and just saw the title and thought 'odear we'd better do something' are banning it. Publicity stunt or ignorance? I'm leaning towards both myself. This game has been banned in several other places too.. it's ridiculous to be honest. You can go through pretty much the whole game without choosing to be a bully :/ It isn't like brazil are missing much anyhow, what a bugfest xD!

    As a Brazilian myself (not proud of it, by any means), I can only say one thing: Let them ban games all they want, won't change anything anyway. The system here is rotten and it's not due to videogames, that I can assure you. Banning a videogame from being sold has never stopped anyone from playing it here. Why? Pretty obvious right (just to make myself clear: I'm not saying that this is what should be done. I'm saying that this is the way things are here.)

    Curious. People who say this things about Brasil, can be usually found on vacation here, committing crimes like pedophilia, kidnap, drug possession and god-knows-what-else (and I'm NOT going to talk about the stealing of natural resources in the Amazon jungle). Like many said here, we have problems, like any other country. But our country is not what many think. We have beautiful beaches (yes, a few, more secluded ones, are for nudists), our people are very friendly and receptive to everyone and more. We do have a lot of violence (even though is not everywhere and some of it is "enlarged" by the media), but which country doesn't? We don't have natural catastrophes (earthquakes, volcanoes, fires, hurricanes), we don't start wars all over the world, our country is a safe haven to everyone, and everyone is welcome to seek refuge. Nobody hates us, nobody wants to destroy us (by that, we don't suffer terrorist attacks). Yes, we do have problems with drug trafficking, but which country doesn't? And we don't produce it, Colombia does. Like my esteemed colleague said a few pages back, our country has many economical attributes. Some of our companies are the largest in the world (like Vale or Petrobras). Our research on Biodiesel is much efficient and environment-oriented than America's.

    Just so I don't lose focus on the topic, it is sad what they're doing to the game industry. But it is to be expected. Politicians often use this measures to pretend they're working. But this prohibition doesn't work, because we can import by purchasing on the Internet.

    wow, quite incredible how a news article turned into a Brazil bashing by several people who doesnt even know in what continent Brazil is located.

    1 - with exception of VERY FEW naturist beaches, topless is actually FORBIDDEN in Brazil. Although feminists are against the prohibition.

    2 - it doesnt matter there is violence in the country. Thats the exact reason some judges think those games shoulnt be sold. Now, if you have violence, you should distribute guns to everyone and destroy your prisons and release the prisoners, otherwise you are an hipocrite?

    Someone caught this story on SKY News? Hey so did I. It was one of the the most blatant, transparent pieces of product-placement marketing I've ever seen, no doubt as part of that lawyer's pay-off in Brazil. I believe it was Edward L. Bernays who pioneered this deceptive sales technique - he talked about it in his book "Propaganda"; everyone should read it. If anyone needed further proof of its effectiveness then just read through these comments! It's amazing... it appears he was right about people's gullibility and being too proud to admit they've been scammed. It's like Adolf Hitler scamming the German populace in the 1930's all over again... It's sad to see nothing has changed in all those years. As well as that book, if you want to really get into the mindset of a typical Rockstar salesman then you need to watch Terry Gilliam's movie "Brazil" (from 1985). As you will see, there is a method to their madness (marketing). They think it's all a big joke and they're laughing at you.

    Like you, those of us who finished playing Bully a long time ago all KNOW there was nothing bad about it in the slightest. It was just a fun great game and that's it. The concept that it needs to be "banned" is a complete joke to the few of us still able to think for ourselves.

    If there really needs to be ANY argument here at all, then what about something relevant? You know, like what about how *easily* a prosecuting lawyer like Alcindo Bastos can be bought as if he's nothing more than a used-car salesman for the Rockstar games-garage?? (Well hey, it wouldn't be the FIRST time Rockstar paid-off a loud-mouthed lawyer to call for their games to be "banned", would it?!?!) If I was a Brazilian citizen I wouldn't be too happy about THAT, and I'd be asking questions about why he is still in his job???? Or at least, how about just trying to enjoy them for the typically clever and amusing scams they come up with whenever a new game is due for release from the Rockstar used-car showroom?

    The whole idea of banning games is stupid. Anyone who kills somebody because of a game he played was already f***d up to begin with.

    Also, what the f*ck is up with other Brazilians here saying that we don't have topless beaches? Of course we do, just like most countries with seashores.

    Hi, I am from Porto Alegre in the state Rio Grande do Sul, really have much Xeat * written in this forum on my country and especially about my state, Brazil is very large and each region has different problems and qualities the southeast and south of where I belong are very intelligent as countries of the first world, the World Social Forum was born in my city then not talk about something that you do not know I never went to the USA and do not have the minimum desire to go and therefore do not have the right to talk things based only on what I see on television, and if the judge of my city decided to ban this game is that violence does not happen in schools equal those of the US, we have to accept more problems in games leading our young people to commit crimes within the schools. Brazil has beautiful cities even with all its defects as well as any city in the world! I actually advocate the idea that we are human independete of country and borders but as I see the world as a mere Latin American patriot I will be until the end and defend my country. If you are able to shudder of indignation every time you commit an injustice in the world, then we are companions Hug everyone. PS: before you ask something about my English when you visit my parents talking a Portuguese horrible I should take into consideration .. Kkkk

    Wait a minute... HUGE porn industry???
    As long as I know, most of the porn production (including sites, films and mags) are from the so called First World (US, Europe and Japan).
    And if Brazil has problems with drugs, that's because there are people from this same First World buying drugs and consequently financing this industry.
    Also, many of this problems are being solved. There are spots of extreme violence, most of them located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. But Brazil is "much more" then Rio, with more then 5.000 cities. And if we opted to preserve our children from exposure to unnecessary violence that's just a demonstration of our resolution to make a better country and a better world.
    So do not speak about things that you don't know.

    What country have hurricanes?

    hey guys im brazilian dont blame the country blame the guy who banned the game i know in usa lots of politicians wants to ban some games also we brazilias have nothing to do with that every country has its problems i will never think that al mricans shoot peoples on the scool or beat up their teachers couse some crazy people did,i think this judge just wanted to show up and he did.we are 180 milhoes people dont blame our country for 1.

    i don't agree with banning games cause you have some man or women making adults minds up for them and telling them you can't play that cause you are to stupid. adults should be able to choose. games should never be banned. having said that as games have been getting banned i agree more with the ban of bully than the stupid ban of manhunt that happened in my country the uk thank goodness rockstar won the appeal to get a release. game show were you go round killing people are not exactly common in real life where as bullying is.

    im from brazil,there are worst things here to be banned,like naked woman in the streets in carnival and naked woman in the beaches,and the globo soappoperas that teach everything thats bad but i think this judge its now on the escene and this is what hi wiches this is gong to make people want to play more the game couse here piracy is on every street and this judge its not worried about this,politicians here are nonsense, im shame of this judge people like him have never playd a game. and rockstar its not gona loose money couse here in brasil people play most of the time pirate games couse the politicians dont realy care,and couse of the torrents sites that can be acessed all over the world.
