Def Leppard pouring sugar on Guitar Hero IV?

What we heard: The gaming industry seems to be quickly discovering that asking a rock star to keep a secret is like asking a child not to eat paste. Recent months have seen real-world rockers tripping over themselves to spill their participation in the latest rhythm games. In September, Aerosmith fretter Joe Perry tipped Activision's hand on a Guitar Hero installment devoted exclusively to the band's extensive catalog, with Brit rockers the Answer signaling a 2008 release for Guitar Hero IV. Most recently, former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach may have spoiled EA's big reveal of a Road Rash revival.

The latest act to take the stage before the spotlight comes up may be glam-metal kings Def Leppard. As per a tip sent in to GuitarHeroNews, Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen reportedly said during the band's appearance on the Rockline Radio show yesterday that three of the band's songs--"Photograph," "Animal," and "Rock of Ages"--will appear in Guitar Hero IV. The comment reportedly came after a caller queried the band on why none of their songs had made it into any installments of Guitar Hero or Rock Band.

Verifying GuitarHeroNews' claim, and consequently Collen's statement, has proven to be a prickly undertaking. While Rockline is in the practice of rebroadcasting its live shows, the Def Leppard show won't be aired again until April 29 due to the fact that it contains as yet unreleased music from the band's newest studio album. Further, requests for confirmation made to Rockline and Def Leppard's publicist had gone unanswered as of press time.

[UPDATE] Last night, Rockline updated its Web site with an extracted audio clip from the Def Leppard interview in which Collen definitively states the band will be included in the next installment in Activision's Guitar Hero series. "We do!" Collen says, continuing, "It's on Guitar Hero IV. We just had to clear a few things like publishing, record company, and all that stuff. But we're going to have, like, three songs, I think, on Guitar Hero IV."

There's also little wiggle room on which edition of the game the band was referring to. Responding to the host's question, "So it is coming out? [GH3] is already out," Collen says, "No, it is coming out, it would have been out earlier, but we didn't get around to it." Collen then reaffirmed which songs would be included in the game, saying, "Yeah, I think Photograph, Animal, and Rock of Ages...something like that, yeah."

In retrospect, it's slightly shocking that Def Leppard has yet to appear in a single installment of Guitar Hero, or Rock Band, for that matter. The band certainly fits the bill of a likely candidate. The group achieved certifiable rock royalty status during the '80s, having released two diamond-selling (10 million-plus) records, Hysteria and Pyromania, and spawning a slew of memorable hits in the process. As such, it stands to reason that Collen's reveal came in good faith and is a clear indication of what is to come. Factor in rock artists' recent display of loose lips, and this possibility creeps ever closer to highly likely.

The official story: "No comment."--An Activision representative.

Bogus or not bogus?: [UPDATE] In light of a verifiable audio clip, this one's looking not bogus.

3 songs? Matbe this means every band will have 3 songs, expanding the total amount to over 120. Very possible since this sequel doesn't seem to be coming out for PS2, but I don't think Wii can handle it.

Another Guitar Hero??? Maybe they got confused and thought Activision meant there songs would be DLC's not a new game!!

No one here is a bigger Leppard fan than me. Hell, most of you probably don't know who they are. Finally, there might be a reason for me to buy the pathetic game that is Guitar Hero. Let's face it, that game is as gay as Def Leppard's new album title "The Sparkle Lounge."

I don't see why people care about rumors about what songs might in the new GH. It's never going to be ground breaking news.

I like how people keep saying Guitar Hero 4 won't have 3 songs. Nobody knows what the set list is, and you never know, it might be frickin' huge! FREAKIN' HUGE!

The only thing I want is Pandora to come back. I miss her.

Way cool! The one gripe I've always had about Guitar Hero is the strum smashing music. With the likes of Aerosmith and Def Leppard (and maybe Van Halen?) the game will now have more real music that your ears can hear and your fingers can feel.

Def Leppard RULES!!! The fact that they haven't been in any of these games so far is shocking. They have a very deep catalog. Very deep.

personally its nice to see some new good old school bands but lets get something more geared towards this gen. the game is heavily played by "younger" gamers. not like you guys care much about this, or should in the 1st place! hell i am far from young and i could give a less rats @ss about this one!

Hmm, three songs you say? That sounds more likely as a downloadable pack than actually being in the game on disc.

Heheh...the whole "none of them being able to keep a secret" thing is hilarious. Once you involve someone outside of the company with knowledge of the game do you really expect them to keep it in? Lulz.

In other words, Def Leppard won't be pouring some sugar on Guitar Hero 4, because that song apparently wasn't chosen.

  • JacksonPC1

    Posted Mar 27, 2008 5:17 pm GMT

To the first poster. Name ONE band that was more popular during the 80's? Def Leppard sold more albums than anybody except for Michael Jackson. Futhermore Pour Some Sugar On Me is not one of the tracks that was mentioned as being on GH4.

I would like to see some more old school rock in these games. Led Zepplin particularly. Oh and Rammstein, that would be epic.

Hmm, I think it'll be a DLC pack if anything. Why would they get three songs in one game when not once has an artist or group had more than one (in the main setlist, not counting DLC)? Velvet Revolver had the same thing happen when they let slip that "She Builds Quick Machines" would be in GH3. Turned out it was, but as part of a DLC pack.

  • dewd4

    Posted Mar 27, 2008 4:13 pm GMT

My advice is just get rock band and wait until they release a def leppard download. Judging how quick they are producing dlc it wont be too long a wait.

Not a real shocker that one of the bigger acts of the 1980s would end up in this game... though I'd certainly rather have "Too Late For Love" or "Foolin'" than "Photograph" or even "Animal"

If they mentioned those three songs only, then that makes me hopeful that the Hysteria that was on the leaked Rock Band DLC list is the Muse song and not the god awful Def Leppard song
