UK cosplayers set Guinness World Record

GameSpot UK headed out this morning to join the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition world record attempt for "The Largest Gathering of Games Characters." Given that the world record did not exist before this attempt, those taking part were safe in the knowledge of beating it.

The gathering took place on the Millennium Bridge in London (a convenient stone's throw from the GameSpot UK office). Guy, Alex, and Luke showed what good sports they were by dressing up, but sadly there weren't enough costumes for Laura and me. Well, someone had to take the photos.

Guy was dressed as Bubba, and Alex as Julius, both from Electronic Arts' rhythm game Boogie, and Luke went as Travis Touchdown from Suda-51's No More Heroes.

There were some great characters at the event: Sonic the Hedgehog put in an appearance, along with various Final Fantasy characters, including a very cold-looking Yuna and Rikku. There was also a Lara Croft, Tails, and a guy who actually looked frighteningly like Gordon Freeman from the Half-Life series.

According to a Guinness spokesperson, over 80 cosplayers turned up. It was great fun! Check out some pictures from the event.

    mini marios! excellent! and ive just noticed the sim's guy in the first photo. thats cool! seen loads of cos-play people at the MCM expo in Telford. brilliant costumes there

    Some people don't seem to realise that this was purely for game characters, not for anime characters like 90% of these conventions everyone is mentioning

    ahaha i was there the "Blond Girl" is my friend and her name is gracey and she worked dam hard makiing that costume. She looked awesome. also luving all the cosplayers there u lot owned. woo FREE HUGS PPL XO lol

    I went to this on Tuesday morning, it was so much fun and everyone was really nice and great to chat to and seeing some of the outfits they had and the characters people came as was so much fun! It was a shame only 80 people turned up, but that's not a problem, it was a Tuesday morning so very few people could make it up to London - there are so many people on cosplay sites that plan on going next year when they set it on the weekend they should have 100s of people there to break the record

    The sim guy was really cool to chat to, Gorden Freeman kept crowbar-ing people (which was most amusing), the poor Rikku girl was absolutely frozen because it was so cold on the Millenium Bridge! But she was lovely to talk to all the same, and the Yuna girl was so sweet and Lulu's dress was gorgeous! All the Fursuit cosplays were awesome, though everyone had to duck whenever Spyro came near otherwise they'd be knocked out by his wings!

    I think everyone did an awesome job considering it was on such short notice. Some cosplayers (including myself) only found out about it a week before and had to make a game character ready for the event, considering that some people made cosplays specifically for this in that time I thought it was so good that people were willing to get involved!

    Well done to all those that went, I had a great time and can't wait to do it again!

    I'm sure this record will be broken soon (it didn't exist before so was being set for the first time) but it was great fun seeing it happen.

    I really don't see how 80 people cuts it, especially when half of them are a bunch of preschool kids dressed in Mario-looking overalls. Who wants to bet that the Guinness judge's kid was one of them?

    Just to point out the record was for original game cosplay, so things that started off as say anime and had a game wouldn't count.

    I dont expect this record to last very long....there are conventions that are just teeming with cosplayers. The only problem is that they need to be gathered up and counted in one place...

    Hmm so this record doesn't exist...? Basically, this record is being made/broken every weekend somewhere in Japan. And is it me or do Japanese Cosplayers have better quality/better looking outfits? Oh well, it's nice more people around the world are having fun.

    Looks like it was good fun. I can't believe you set a record with 80 people, it is a reasonable amount but in Japan don't they have conventions where loads of people in cosplay come together

    oooookay, don't know what the fuss is about the blonde. Maybe if she wasn't in a training bra then she would look more accurate. Still don't know what the big to do is with blondes anyway....I dated a chic who looked like a near spitting image of Payne off of X-2, and she didn't even know it 'till I showed her the strategy guide. She already had the funky red/purple hair, wore the make up, and even had a c cup. But props to who ever was Nights, Amy Rose, and that's the best looking Gordon Freeman i've ever seen! Should have had a headcrab hat on too...that would have been icing on the cake.

    Wow! The Sonic and Spyro costumes are wicked. Pink hair, mini Marios and some awesome Final Fantasy costumes.

    I think British Rikku is more than a match for her Japanese sisters. Nuf said.

    Also, is that Lizo (from Newsround) I see in the centre of the first picture?

    Everyone saying the blond girl is hot is because shes half naked. With normal clothes Im sure shed be average at best. Look at her face closely and and look at her boobs, they only look good cuz she wearing that costume. Not saying shes ugly. In that costume shes hot and Id probably do her but if I saw her in the street with normal clothes I wouldnt even bother...
