The Prince of Persia is one step closer to a shot at becoming Hollywood royalty. After pre-production on the film version of Ubisoft's action series was disrupted by the departure of original director Michael Bay (Transformers, The Island) and put on hold by the Writer's Guild of America strike, the Prince appears back on track.

In December, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed for GameSpot that the film has a new director in Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), who was set to begin location scouting earlier this year. Newell apparently found a location he liked, as Variety is reporting this week that shooting on the film is set to begin in the North African nation of Morocco in mid-June.

Morocco has provided a backdrop for a number of recent feature films, including Alexander, Babel, and Stop-Loss. Going further back, the country also played host to classics like Lawrence of Arabia and The Man Who Knew Too Much.

As of late last year, Bruckheimer was aiming for a 2009 release for the Prince of Persia film.

    Finally a good producer and director. Under a good company too(Jerry Bruckheimer Films). But then again Disney will probably screw the whole thing up. This needs to be an R rated movie for it to do the series honor.

    Depends which game they base the film off first I suppose. It'll probably be either really good or really cheesy. I just hope this will be better than Tomb Raider... all of them!

    Nice, Ditching Michael Bay for Mike Newell really ups my expectation...which can be bad considering all the video game movies that came out as crap!

    hey Resident Evil was great, for exception of the 3rd one, but... wow now i'm excited, any idea who will play the main character? i think Oded Fehr from The Mummy could have been good pick

    man... what was wrong with the goblet of fire movie? i really didnt think it was all that bad, considering the amount of content that needs to be crammed in.

    i sense the story will be too altered.... personally i think the 2nd PoP is the most successful. though it seems that the title of the movie is sands of time which refers to the first game release
    its not gonna be as good without the "empress of time" she's too hot to ignore

    i hope this film is great, but i have a feeling it will be too kiddish(HP4 was a good movie tho). PoP was violent, dark, bloody, and maybe even a bit sexual. The only way to make this movie incredible is if it was rated R, which it wont be...but i guess i'll have to settle for PG-13. Also, i've heard that its goin to be a disney movie. like Pirates of the Carribean. i dont see how you can make this into a Disney movie!

    I hope they release another prince of persia game, too. For xbox 360 would be nice... If it looks like assasins creed but plays like Prince of Persia older titles, I would be very happy.

    SWEET!!!!!! This film is going to be insanely awsome. Can't wait for it to be released. One question: Is it going to just be sands of time or the whole trilogy?

    P.S. Curious to see how the special effects team will handle rewinding time.

    It's most likely gonna be a PG13 movie. Just lik Pirates of the Carribean, also a Jerry Bruckheimer production.

    what's important is who's playing the prince .... Orlando bloom , Christian biel or maybe Gerard Butler ... this is gonna be tough ... because the the prince role is so sensitive ... But man I'm looking forward to the movie.
