The crackdown came to light when a 17-year-old Minnesotan who goes by the handle "Scar" posted a tale of woe on the forums of the Halo-focused modding site Se7ensins.com. His post was accompanied by a photo of his ban notice from Xbox Live, which expires on December 31, 9999 AD--some 7,447 years after the events in Halo are supposed to take place.

How did the eternal banhammer fall on Scar? "A friend said he got the Epsilon from a friend and offered me to glitch it onto my account with what you call the two-controller exploit," he told GameSpot. "I downloaded it from Marketplace and played it for maybe six hours or so all alone, in custom games and campaign. [Then] it would kick me offline every time i tried to play Epsilon. It wasn't until the next day when i signed on that I found out i got banned."

Despite being a self-described "achievement whore" with a GamerScore of over 61,000, Scar--who doesn't want his real name made public--has no plans to appeal his ban. "Other people i know that had this happen to them at the same time as me called support and had no luck," he rued. "I know of at least 10 others that downloaded it and got banned till 9999."

When asked for comment, reps for Microsoft said the company was not officially commenting on the 7,992-year bans. However, a source close to Bungie said the ban screen "looked legit," wryly adding, "Sorry, great, great, great, great grandkids."

    not fair that those ppl used the final copy of halo 3 to play with, but a perm ban with an almost funny 7992 year ban is a lil cruel... i mean, for us that ban is funny, but those who have been banned with a thought like ''ahhh dont worry you will be unbanned... in 7992 years'' its not, a bit childish actually.

    Ok well my nephew was banned with the same message, however, he did not do the cheat on Halo. We brought his account over to 360 and because I didnt go through and change the family settings it made it so that when he tried to use version 1 it said he was banned but he could still logon on the 360. apparently the default adult setting mean that version 1 games cant be play on the account and voice communication is not allowed. This is what I was told by the techs at microsoft. So if you have a kid account on 360 and its banning you from version 1 xbox and you didnt try the hack then maybe this will be the solution. Just offering some help to those who might need it. Not sure if this is actually the thing that is causeing it but thats what they told me. ill repost tomorrow/later tonight to let you all know

    Man... I'm tired of cheaters. If you weren't invited to the Epsilon test just wait LESS THAN 2 WEEKS for the game to actually come out. He lost a 67K gamerscore so he could play 2 weeks early? Thats so not worth it.

    On the next episode of Cheaters, kid gets banned forever on Halo. I don't fully understand. If I'm to understand this, a kid cheated on a download demo, to raise his gamerscore, got caught, & is now banned from the game until 9999? Okay, whatever.

    I agree that this is fair, but there is one thing about this punishment that gets me worried. What about those ppl that just leave bad feedback or call you in for beating theme in a leet game? I mean some ppl cant think "wow this guy is good and or better than me'. I know this from H2 I would get in the gause hog and pwn ppl with it...On the accasion i had host and or off host, but on a good one. Or even in a regular BR fight. PPL would tell that i was a cheater or just so happen the person that had host was a terible one and they were not smart enough to think man this lagg is terible. You see this is when my consern comes in, Bungie/MS are yall actually gona check to see if the person that was left bad feedback is really cheating or you just gonna drop the hammer on him.

    That SUCKS. It's a bit harsh, in my opinion. I mean, what, now they can't play XBL until they get an Xbox 361 (or nextbox, whatever it will be called)? Man... another reason to wait for my 360 until Halo 3's release... or at least soon enough to pick it up the second it touches the borders of my town...
