In the Hitman games, protagonist Agent 47 specializes in stealth kills. And for a year and a half after it was first announced, 20th Century Fox's movie adaptation of Eidos' series also kept a low profile. That changed once filming got underway earlier this year, with Deadwood star Timothy Olyphant stepping into the lead role after Vin Diesel exited the project.

However, come this Wednesday, action hero John McClane (Bruce Willis) will help expose 47's first filmed mission to the world. According to well-regarded film site Comingsoon.net, the first Hitman trailer will debuting alongside Bruce Willis' explosion-happy cop drama Live Free or Die Hard when it debuts June 27. Not-so coincidentally, Olyphant plays the villain in Live Free or Die Hard.

Penned by Skip Woods (Swordfish) and directed by Xavier Gens, Hitman follows the titular assassin as he navigates a political conspiracy while whacking targets and evading capture by Interpol and the Russian military. It premieres in North American theaters on October 12.

[UPDATE] Late last night, those wishing to see the Hitman trailer got the option of not having to see Live Free or Die Hard at all. The trailer is now up on YouTube. The clip, which runs nearly two minutes, features the Hitman game logo and features music taken from the series' most recent installment, Hitman: Blood Money. It also shows that the movie will stick to the game's premise of 47 being a genetically engineered assassin, instead of taking dramatic licenses like other game-based films, such as Doom.

Looks very promising so far. I daresay we'll like Olyphant's 47 better than the Hitman portrayed in games. Before naysayers denounce this movie from past game-movie adaptations, keep in mind the games they were adapting from and the moneygrubbing producers behind them. This is their first opportunity of a video game noir.

    Interesting...

First, Hitman started on the PC, branched out to consoles, and if I'm correct, skipped out on the PC in the last installment. For you Hitman fans, however, don't get the first game for the PC; it's not that great but it gives you a great idea of how well the series has progressed.

Second, to the point hackslash made, I agree, he doesn't look a lot like 47, but if he can match his demeanor, then IMHO, it'll work perfectly. However, I think this may spark movie-goers to possibly at least look into the Hitman series, if not just see the movie. I felt the clip needed a bit more length to it, but the music used was just perfect.

I hope this movie does well as i am a huge fan of the Hitman Games.
The actor playing 47 Timothy Olyphant looks surprisingly good for the role.
This is really a relief as when Vin Diesel left the role. Bring on 12 October 2007.

I'll see it, but I'm skeptical of any video game based movie. And that trailer didn't give me any reason to be optimistic.

I'm not sure I'm confident in the actor, either. We shall see, though.

The youtube clip looks fake! Patched together from a lot of differint clips.

    And it looks weird.

Just saw die hard today and it was very good as always. It's nice to see John Maclane back in business:-)

Hitman is game many people wants to see as the film, but it is also one of the game that will be... dull if it does.

Jason Statham ( the guy from crank ) would've been the best 47, no doubt

It was a bad move to let Vin Diesel go, this cheap actor will only drive the film into a black hole...... shame

I have low hopes for this movie, the actor looks too young and apart from a bald head does not really look like 47. I hope they succeed but won't hold much hope for it

hopefully they dont take away for the hitman games, like hitmans features-blue-eyes, completely bald(no stubals)...but this should be a good movie...very few games go to movies.

Olyphant just isn't intimidating enough to be Agent 47. If you are going to be an assassin, you should be able to instill fear in the heart of your victim. Olyphant with a bald head will make his victims laugh.

Can't really tell a whole lot from the trailer and I haven't played the games, so I'll have to wait and see what others think of Hitman after it comes out in October.

Watched the Hitman trailer, and it looks halfway decent. The inclusion of Ave Maria is a nice touch, but dammit.. I just can't see Timothy Olyphant in that role. He simply doesn't jive with the cold, hard image of Agent 47. I'll keep an open mind, tho. He's a great actor.

tbh. it was obvious from the very begining that hitman movie would suck. im huge fan of the franchise and basicly it's what make it so valuable for gaming community would ruin the film. because who runs in hitman games? who sets up bombs which blows right in face of a swat team? there's no extra fast car chasing. it'a about cold blooded cloned silent assasin who kills only if agency pays him enough. he just comes into your house and kill your mommy while you're sleeping because she's important person who made some enemies. it's not like they're going to do a movie in which in the end the main character doesn't turn out to be just a tender soul searching for love in the cruel world because it would be adult only rated and they wouldn't make any money. and that's why i won't see the movie unless gaming community gives it a great rating (which won't happen because it sucks) and just wait for the next game of hitman series.

Argh, this is terrible! I wish that they'd never decided to make a Hitman movie, it's just going to ruin the series, as they decide to start basing the games off the movie. And if they want to make a movie, David Bateson should be playing 47. Bloody Hollywood producers! Absolutely disgusting perversion of the great series of Hitman.

Hhhmm.. trailer didn't look that great to me, but we'll have to wait and see how this one turns out. I loved the games, but how it translates to the big screen will be a different story.

    Posted Jun 26, 2007 10:52 pm GMT

This has the potential to be really good.

    So did Silent Hill, though.

Olyphant is capable of doing a good job, even though he looks way too young and thin.

  • Qixote

    Posted Jun 26, 2007 8:41 pm GMT

They got the music right, even though it's a direct take from Hitman: Blood Money. But the lead looks nothing like agent 47. Even though the trailer was short, it failed to capture the persona of the agent 47 character that the video games do so well.

I will not see the Hitman movie. The actor does not look or act like Agent 47. Without a good characterization, a movie based on the game is pointless.

    @Demmi_Argo

I kinda agree with you, but I think Tim's a step up from Vin. His face is too youthful, but the way he's put together is more believable. Diesel's a tad too bulky for the role. If you look at this still shot of him here he's actually looking good for the part. I'm pretty confident in the movie, because the source material's a lot less over-the-top than the others, so it should allow for a more serious adaptation.

  • Demmi_Argo

    Posted Jun 26, 2007 6:18 pm GMT

Frankly, I think Vin Diesel would have made a great part as Agent 47, unfortunately people seem to disagree. But he has that certain emotionless, ice-cold demeanor that 47 carries in the Hitman games, frankly I think that Timothy's face is too full of movement and emotion to pull of 47's aura.
