Call of Duty sequel confirmed for 2010

Days before Modern Warfare 2 launch, Activision confirms it will continue releasing annual installments of first-person shooter series.

After Activision announced better-than-expected earnings today, its executives held a conference call with analysts. During the call, they made the not-so-surprising revelation that the company is planning to release new installments in its tent-pole game franchises.

"In [calendar year] 2010, Activision Publishing is expected to release strong, innovative new titles," Activision Publishing president Mike Griffith told analysts. "The diversified lineup will include titles based on the best selling franchises including Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, Shrek, [and] Spider-Man."

While the Shrek game will be a tie-in with the forthcoming computer-animated film Shrek Forever After, little is known about the new Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, or Spider-Man titles. However, the next Spider-Man movie won't be released until 2011 at the earliest, meaning that the next game, first revealed in August, will likely be comic-book based.

That said, there is a fair amount of information--and even more speculation--about the next Call of Duty game. In May, an employee at Call of Duty: World at War developer Treyarch accidentally revealed that "Call of Duty 7" was already "in production," presumably for the series' traditional holiday release window.

The Treyarch report closely followed a rumor that had the studio's music department looking for "Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music"--hinting at a Cold War setting. Though unconfirmed, that came several months after Treyarch's senior producer told the UK edition of Official Xbox Magazine that Call of Duty: World at War would be the last game in the series to be set during World War II. That transition has already been made by franchise founder Infinity Ward, whose second present-day game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, ships Tuesday.

There's also the possibility the new Call of Duty game due in 2010 may not be a direct sequel. At a press event that preceded June's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said his company was looking to expand the series into other genres. In March 2008, he publicly mused about the possibility of a massively multiplayer title based in the Call of Duty universe.

    i like all call of dutys full stop. I have enjoyed playing each one, from the original on pc to mw2, i have a personal preferance of ww2 i dont know why but always have maybe its because what started me on online gaming on the pc and discoverd the fun that clans bring. i wish they would have one last go at making a ww2 normandy game as there hasnt really been one on 360 cod2 i know was but id already played it on pc. saying that i will buy whatever it is, and a NAM game does sound good and maybe awsome as no one has done it. however i have read american posts on other sites saying that they would disagree with the move to a NAM game as obviously it is a sensitive topic in america, would they take that risk of making a game that wouldnt sell to there biggest market ? i have no opinion on that im just a kid but could see why they would disagree with it.

    Sorry for double post, but this should be like EA's Battlefield Bad Company series, where you are in a destructible environment (blow up buildings with a M203, grenade launcher for those who don't know their guns, take down a tree with a fragnade, etc.).

    I know what this could be. This could be the third installment in Modern Warfare, or other words called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

    I cant wait for COD7. I got my fingers crossed that it has bullet wounds and gore. If anythign the Modern weapons from MW@ should have put holes in people but they didn't and that doesnt feel rigth to me. Guns=messy bodies and every shooter should have a realistic amount of mess. Flying lead especially when flying the speed it does out of any modern assualt rifle from MW2 should put a red mark or hole in anybodies head. Infinity Ward doesnt seem to get that.

    @sportsguru I dont get why everybody hates on treyarch COD3 was alot better than 2...especially the online modes. W@W was way more fun than MW1 or 2. I hope treyarch keeps in the bloodstain on enemies bodys from where they get shot and ability to blow off limbs with high powerded weapons...i was disapointed MW 2 didnt take the carnage from w@W and pit it inot their own game...MW2 would have been alot better with some more blood. Specops was not even a co op campaign, it was like very small segments of levels from the campaign with an objective to complete...and its not as fun as ZOMBIES. and the story in MW2 was too short. I cant wait for treyarchs next game...MW2 is old already and im still playing WAW(im getting sick of ww2 but its better than mw2)

    Truthfully, I like Treyarch's games better then Infinity Ward, Treyarch baisacally makes the game centerred around the gamers satisfaction where as Infinity Ward never shys from the ever confining stereotype of a shooters online play should revolve solely around shooting other people the most obvious example is nazi zombies I can fully assure you Infinity Ward will make no such special features of online gameplay, if you say "spec-ops" thats baisacally campaign co-op,Treyarch makes special features and they'll liably make another mode that strays from the norm,Treyarch has my respect they don't just do what every other shooter does they include modes that shy from the stereotype, I shalute you Trey Arch

    Treyarch really better make my jaw drop when i see the first trailer because why spend $60 on another CoD game when i have one that better (MW2) .Actually im not planning on buying a new CoD game till Infinity Ward releases Modern Warfare 3.So Treyarch if u want my money make a kick ass game !

    WW2 is how the series started, and got it got its fame as a ww2 shooter. You guyys act like Modern Warfare is something new and refreshing....IT'S EVERY OTHER SHOOTER ON THE MARKET! modern gun, modern tech, or future guns and future tech. I will take ww2 over modern warfare ANY DAY.

    @cjasko94 I agree with you Modern Warfare 2 is boring already(unless your a MP whore). The campaign was too short and it didn't realy feel like as visceral as it should have. You still can't open doors,the game forces you on some kid of track during the campaign. My biggest complaint was when you shot people no red stains showed on them, explosives didn't blow off peoples limbs and I thought that would have been a nice touch to the MW series. They could do alot of battles for the cold war. Most western minds are conditioned to thinking the cold war was not a war and there was no fighting.

  • aaronfhff123

    Posted Dec 19, 2009 8:48 am GMT

    @DS_ROCKER maybe in the dreamland, American, Matrix you and many others live in the cold war wasn't a war but it sure was to christian Africans fighting with the Islamic jihad, Communism/Marxism as well the mercenary armies and corporations of the Western transnational elite of the Northern Hemisphere. Not only was a war raging hot over there but they delt with a horrific amount of genocide, famine, AIDS, etc...these battles among many others were funded by and even helped by in secret by USA, Cuba, and USSR....the CIA should be famous for starting or helping wars in 3rd world countries but the CIA works in secret. Many other battles happened at this time too in Korea, Vietnam, and other parts of the world I can't remember. The news and our school history books may not have covered all the battles in detail but if a FPS is being made about the cold war expect to play in a lot of heated battles your conditioned western mind has never been spoonfed.

  • DS_ROCKER

    Posted Dec 16, 2009 10:12 am GMT

    hmm.... maybe it will be futuristic. The Cold War wasn't really a war. All that happened was an Atomic Bomb over stock. Now we have all these Atom Bombs and nothing to do with them except blow up the world. If it took place in the Cold War, you'd probably be a spy or just make bombs, etc.

    @halo4lyfe. They will guarrentee it. They don't say it now but the ending of the 2nd one set it up for a 3rd one unlike MW1 that everyone thought it was over until they announced a 2nd one.

    @cjasko94 I know they overlap, but they're two different conflicts. They could do something with the Cold War that was behind the scenes. Something creative. It doesn't have to be factual. To me, something fictional would be far more interesting.

  • cjasko94

    @Neosword
    Vietnam is during the "Cold War" Which wasn't even a war. You know how World at War had 2 different stores? One with the Russians and one with the Americans? They should do something like that.

  • cjasko94

    Posted Dec 1, 2009 8:56 am GMT

    Yes Cold war! So much you can do with the story during this era. You have Vietnam, Russians vs Afghanistan etc. COD7 will be good. I am already bored with MW2...same stuff as COD4.

    I payed $60 dollars for COD: Modern Warfare 2 it wasn't worth it I could have got something like Medal of Honor something cheep for around $20 bucks. Believe me Modern Warfare 2 was the best game i've ever played. So I traded it in and got $20 and got my medal of honor game hope this helps! I also went back in and saw that gamestop had it for sale for $35 so I bought it again because I missed it! Thanks for the ripp off gamestop!

    Let them make a vietnam war or a cold war game. One main reason Modern Warfare 2 was great is that they left the modern era and waited a while before they went back. Almost every time a movie, game, or book does that it becomes a success. Play your vietnam next year but then the year after that you get a kick ass modern warfare game.

    Although I would like to see a COD game at Vietnam setting, there are still lots of ideas out there for a COD game. They could start on COD:WORLD WAR 3 or COD: KOREAN INVASION etc. Obviously they have to make up story and events for this.

    @supergamer514 yes but if for me. When I play a game, there must be gore. When people get shot up in real life it is messy. In the games that I play it is messy. I grew up at a time when M rated games where not afraid of violence. I grew up playing these games and these are the games I like to play now that i an adult. PLEASE ADD CARNAGE! CARNAGE MAKES GAMEPLAY SO MUCH MORE VISCERAL AND SATISFYING!

    @aaronfhff123
    after playing the campaign for mw2, i can safely say that it was darker than cod4 and will probably be darker than mw3. generally, games only feature a gratuitous amount of blood in a dark storyline (look at waw). i think mw3 will probably be about as bloody as mw2. however, if treyarch is making a vietnam game, expect pools upon pools of blood.

  • supergamer514

    There were plenty of wars fought during the Cold War, just not a direct one between the US and USSR so its pretty easy to speculate what a Cold War COD would be like. Plus they mentioned some of the possible scenarios in the article.
