80GB PS3 confirmed for August 28 in Australia

New PS3 model to ship with one DualShock 3 controller.

During E3, GameSpot chatted to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss David Reeves about a whole host of topics, with the top executive disclosing that the then newly announced 80GB PlayStation 3 model would be coming to Australian shores on August 27. It seems Reeves was just one day off on his announcement, with confirmation coming today that the 80GB PS3 will be landing down under on August 28.

The new PS3 model will retail for the same price as the superseded 40GB model--A$699--and will ship with one DualShock 3 controller. Sony Computer Entertainment Australia head Michael Ephraim, in an interview with GameSpot AU recently, said he expected the new model to sell well down under. "The first half of this year has been a PlayStation 3 half. The gaming category is so big now, and there are so many different experiences you can get out of video gaming, like hardcore gaming, casual gaming, and family gaming," he said.

Randolph Ramsay loves games in the same way monkeys love bananas. Sure, they can live without it, but what's the point? He also loves fighting games, but never plays online in case people notice just how bad he is at them.

no it doesnt... this is based off the 40 gig sept with a new hdd! dont be fooled! that 80 gb which had backwards comp was only sold in america, we arnt getting that one. ITS THE SAME AS THE 40GB AUSTRALIAN VERSION SEPT WITH A BIGGER HDD!

does this one bring back backwards compatibility, does this one increase my number of usb ports, does this one have a multi memory card reader? till then sonys machine gathers dust on my shelf; only currently drawn out for pixeljunk eden over the 360 that we borderline keep 'always on' in this house. is it worth it sony, for me to sell my non vibrating, 40gb ps3?

But only for those who still have a ps2.

Yeah, but you don't need to do that on your Ps3. Its not like you are forced to destroy your Ps2 when you get your Ps3 - you can still play it (hell, thats what I do). Hence, no need for the BC on the Ps3

I just did Halo 1, 2 + 3 again in the last week. Someone still plays the older games. It's good to bo back from hte start so you can appreciate the development through the game's evolution.

B.C. would at least mean there was something to play. Especially if you already own either a 360 or PC.

wow they make so many new ps3s it makes me feel bad that i got the 40 gig good thing for the low cost hard drives :D but yea who needs backwards compatability thats why i got a ps2

ScottEFresh

Who needs backwards compatability anyways? BC is soooooooooooooooooo overrated...and this is comming from a person who owns a nice PS2 collection including MGS 2,3 , half life, socom, tekken, manhunt, gta , etc etc. IM NOT PLAYING PS2 GAMES! I'm playing PS3 games and I don't even think of my PS2 games. Buy a PS3 for PS3 games...not PS2 games.

No backwards compatability? Well, that's too bad, especially if you don't own a PS2.

The price is still too high. But the fact that it has a Blu-Ray drive still makes it ever so tempting :P

Cool 80gb for the awesome game library the ps3 has.(crosses fingers)

It's still lame that they eliminated the backwards compatibility fully. Software emulation wasn't that bad(I have a (60 gig and 40gig)but eliminating it fully means people have to keep their ps2 if they bought the ps3 later in the cycle. I still have my slim though so meh

I am glad I got the original 60 GB with the emotion drive cause it just sucks that you can't play the PS2 large catalog of games.

They are getting the shaft down under. Their bombers are in range of Japan and should attack again in lieu of this scam.

Hey imprezawrx500 you should go back in the day were there was no High tech graphics and hi definition sound. remember back then? lol the reason why the drives are less space is because it would make the console itself more expensive, and not all of us can afford it.

Just replaced my hard drive, so this doesn't worry me at all. Space out of the box just doesn't matter. You may as well by a 20gb and then just buy a 320gb hard drive.

No backwards compatability and no Pro duo card slots on this model.

I'm just glad I got the MGS4 PS3 bundle when it came out. 80GB hard drive and backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games.

So, now the ps3 owners can play like seven games without replacing the HDD for a bigger one.... big deal. :)

I'm just glad i got my PS3 60Gb with B.C. back at UK launch+ i got it brand new from E-bay £££s cheaper than the then shop price.

I'm surprised there's such a positive reaction to this. I'm about as much of a PlayStation fanboy as you can get, but the removal of PS2 backwards compatibility from all models, if I still didn't have a PS3 I'd be sure to get mine BEFORE August 27. Replacing a PS3 drive is easy enough and cheap enough, but you can't install your own backward compatibility... Though that's just me. From what I hear, there are a lot of people who have backward compatibility and never use it...

@Devvy01 -- Who is going to pay the extra $46 to go from a 80gb HDD to a 320gb HDD ? The whole reason for SONY going from 40gb to 80gb is because manufactures no longer want to make 40gb drives -- so 80gb drives are the same price, if not $1 or $2 cheaper...

Devvy01

cost of 80gb HDD, $49, cost of 320Gb HDD, $95, why the outdated hardware?

imprezawrx500, the 80G 40G 20G 60G is just to make the model easier to identify. between 80G and 40G the difference is not even the size of a double layer blue ray disk. if you need space, just plug an extra hard drive.

so what does the 80gb cost

MiltoxBeyond

They have to make a profit.... they're not gonna give you a 320 gb drive for the same price that they've been getting away with selling an 80 GB. Sides 80 gigs still is a pretty decent amount of space for just game saves quite a few demos and game data... much better than the 20 gig...
