I love both MW2 and Black Ops. I'm happy as hell that I don't get nuked every 10mins in black ops, but I miss mowing people down with the AUG in MW2. It's only an assault rifle in Black Ops. Treyarch did a good job keeping Black Ops entertaining and adding new features I just hope the next one has perfect balance of both of these games. As well as making the AUG a light machine gun again =P
Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg says there are no plans to make popular shooter series' online mode subscription based.
In mid-June, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick sent shivers down the spines of Call of Duty players everywhere. When asked by the Wall Street Journal what one thing he would change about his company, he bluntly said, "I would have Call of Duty be an online subscription service tomorrow." That sentiment was echoed by Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter three weeks ago, when he predicted Activision would find a way to monetize the shooter series' wildly popular online modes.
Thankfully, the idea of charging for Call of Duty online multiplayer has been shot down--by none other than Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg. "Are we going to be charging for multiplayer? The answer is no," he told Industry Gamers this week. "The experience you have out of the box, connecting with the online community to play Call of Duty is absolutely integral to the experience, and we'll never charge for that. It's not going to be something we'll attempt to monetize; it's part of the package."
Hirshberg continued, "Nothing we or anyone else tries is going to work if it doesn't have tremendous value for people and add a tremendous value to the gaming experience. …There are certainly a lot of behavioral shifts toward long-standing online relationships… But at the end of the day, all I'm trying to get across is I can unequivocally say we will never, ever charge for the multiplayer."
Hirshberg's words will come as a comfort to the millions of gamers who paid a collective $650 million to pick up Call of Duty: Black Ops during its first five days on the market. The game boasted over 1 million players on Xbox Live within hours of its release, proving the popularity of its online competitive multiplayer mode.

I would love for them to charge for Call of Duty online. I'm so sick of Activision. This would be the nail in the coffin for them. In the long run, I don't think even Blizzard's cash cow can save Bobby Kotick from himself.
This is stupid to even consider CoD has been releasing worse and worse titles and to think they would charge even more is just ridiculous. I believe if they did this people would just give up on the franchise, i know i would. There are plenty of other shooters that haven't been discovered because people are too obsessed with CoD and won't take there heads out of there asses. c:
Black ops = fail now with all the hackers in the last week even WM@ = FAil im sooo sad i want my cod fix one sec i was 10th presitgie the next im lvl1 ni prestige and now im randomly at 6th prestige lvl 49 and i didn't even ok the pretige
All the people who say oh black ops is **** and stuff simply can't handle change all they want is the same game over and over again just with new skins and I will admit when i started on black ops mp I was like wtf but it was new and now I am thinking, wow I like how they implemented that and all the wow moments and stuff
Black Ops Multiplayer sucks, modern warfare 2 MP is a lot better, but the respawn is bad and too many hackers. If they make a Modern Warfare 3 i don't know if i buy it. the Campaign is good in black ops but the MP sucks. If they make a new one, they must work on campaign and multiplayer. now they must make a good game.
please make MODERN WARFARE 3 ASAP to change this BLACK (B)OOPS. this is HEAVEN's for CAMPERS. this game is the best of the WORST. this is a BREAKDOWN for COD or SHOOTING GENRE full with FAULTY. DISCONNECTED due to TRANSMISSION ERROR. the MP STUCK (WAITING MORE PLAYERS to BEGIN MATCH, even the player allready BALANCED 18/18 for the GROUND WAR i.e "THIS SERVER ERROR"). BLINKING SCREEN.too small size enemy graphics. too many BIG ROOMs.so that every one can shoot at you.SLOW SERVER uncomfort weapon sistem. difficult to use the EQUIPMENT like the C4, JAMMER, motion sensor, etc (TOO MANY BUTTON HAVE to push) not like MW2.please make MODERN WARFARE 3 as quick as possible. the PERKS have a difficult CHALLENGE to upgrade. useless weapons. scavenger perk cannot reload/resupply RPG or 2ndary weapons or equipment like C4 / claymore. PLEASE FORWARD this MESSAGE to ACTIVISION. luckily the COD:BLACK (B)ooPs was given FREE from my PSN FRIEND. PRAISE LORD JESUS becos HE is GENEROUS to me, dont want me to loose my money for buying CRAPS. I DONT EVEN FINISH THE SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN. is it score 9.0 fitted this game?
Actually are less people playing black ops than MW2 one year ago. If they begin to charge to play on line , goodbye multiplayer cod.
I don't believe this... when Blizzard is making money off of w.o.w. on a monthly basis... the truth is when this game generates enough interest it will be pay to play.. they only say this now...
Bobby Kotick: Why is it that everytime this guy's name comes up, **** bobs up soon after? Is there no end to this dude's infamy?
How someone actually wondered if they would sell the multiplayer is beyond me. How someone would be dumb enough to pay for multiplayer would be surprising but DLC is actually like that and lots of people do it so nothing surprises me anymore .
By just mentioning it, they have proved that they have plans to charge for the multiplayer in the future. At least we know, it's going on in their heads. Or maybe they're trying to prove how great a company they are by providing multiplayer for FREE !!!
there not charging because they have aloready made a buttload of money.....and just cause it's free doesnt mean it's a good game....MW2 SUCKED, BLK OPS IS OK ......COD4 IN MY OPINION WAS AND STILL IS THE BEST ONE AND ONLY ONE WORTH PLAYING.
@JoeMama9800 yeah but the difference is that you pay for online across all games not just the one, but you are right, infact i think by making it more exclusive by making people pay, it might attract more users because they will reveal it as "a golden experience", but seriously, you cant polish a turd
my god, even the sheer mentality of some CEO's and employees at activision just prove how money driven their company is, their crummy COD DLC packs are the most expensive dlc's on the market, they get enough money as it is, and the multiplay is essentially the same just with new guns and maps for each game. Activision stop milkin it!
We'll be sure to hold Activision to this statement in the future. Kudos to Hirshberg at least for taking a stand, it seems. Heavens knows the move would be lucrative.
Games are already overpriced. Companies make tons more profit now, then they ever did before next-gen titles. That extra ten bucks a title has helped a ton. They wont charge for online play with COD titles, because they are waiting for Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo to release a new console and slap on another ten bucks to every title to milk the money anyways. Just sayin'.
Bullcrap, what will they do when they run out of ideas, and people stop buying their rehashed games? they will have to charge to make money
alot of people say they wont pay but look at xbl, they are paying to play online, aren't they? think about it...xbox 360 is the only system charging and look how many people still buy it...cod will sell and if they charge for online mp, it will lose some people, but people are willing to pay , due to the fact its one of the best shooter games out there and the sells show for it...will you be one of the ones to pay for it if they do charge????
good job, considering what buisness is like when one major player starts taking advantage another one follow suit and does the same, followed by another and another and another until we're all a bit peeved
should bloody hope not aswell if they started charging i wouldnt buy the game, they wouldnt be able to charge anyways because as soon as they did titles like medal of honour and battlefield will take a huge amount of their customers. There games are to much like a gladiator match not a battlefield they should have bigger open maps like battlefield.
im surprises they put the word NEVER charge you and yet theyll probably charge you for new maps like mw2
Greedy man! This is why our economy is jacked up by corporate and political greed for money. Thankfully I can still play COD for free since I pay $60 a year now for XBOX Live, which I don't complain, because I love the XBOX live service and it's worth it. But if I have to pay to play COD, that would be dumb. Just because COD now is the biggest selling entertainment of all time, Activision make billions now and they want to be greedy for more money? Wow! But at least they are now saying it's going to stay free! If I got to pay extra just to play a particular game, I think I'm going to pick another hobby.
If they charge me to play Call of duty online i wouldn't buy the game in first place.... Call of duty has not been the same since Call of duty 3...
how much do you think activision would charge for me to punch bobby kotick in the head? are we talkin like 5 bucks for one punch, 20 bucks for 5 punches, and 100 bucks to punch his head until he is unconscious? I would say money well spent. i think that would make easily 650 million dollars.
I'm guessing they'll "never" add fees in the same way the lib dems would "never" vote for increased tuition fees. sorry for the political reference
Boolshet, Call of Duty has turned into a cheaply made copy and Paste franshise like Halo, Activision would'nt beable to resist charging for MP seeing that idiots are willing to throw their money away on such a mediocre game.
Was just thinking of it I mean M.A.G supports way more players in matchs then COD has less glitchs and yet they don't charge (unless you count the $0.99 if you want the other chacter slots but thats by choice if you want to not forced) so just taking into consideration what M.A.G does as a FPS, the subject of COD charging is just a joke.
The fact that they have to try and advertise "we will never charge for online with call of duty" is kind of seems shady. the subject matter shouldn't even come up especialy with modern gaming. what I find even sader is you know if they did charge thousands of people would be stupid enough to actully PAY! just cause they are addicted to the name "Call of Duty" @volcomstoner180: good idea I may just do that and when they do charge we can send it to them and ask "wtf happened" ;]
they tried to get me with planetside and failed. No game will ever have a strangle hold on my wallet like that.
