I hope this game is successfull cause I live in Rhode Island and I dont want to have to pay for it through my tax dollars haha
New massively multiplayer online game from embattled 38 Studios landing in 12 months; first trailer revealed.
38 Studios' massively multiplayer online game currently codenamed Project Copernicus is scheduled to arrive in June 2013. The news comes from Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee, who revealed the date today during a press conference attended by Joystiq discussing the future of embattled Providence-based 38 Studios.
Further details on the game were not revealed, as Chafee simply stated, "What I understand is Copernicus is June '13." Requests to 38 Studios for confirmation of the date were not returned as of press time.
Also during the briefing today, Chafee announced that 38 Studios' $1.125 million check to the state of Rhode Island has cleared. This fulfills the company's first obligated payment on the game studio's controversial 2010 $75 million loan from the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC).
38 Studios founder Curt Schilling offered his first public comments on the issues surrounding the company last night through Facebook.
"To all the prayers and well wishes to the team and families at 38, God Bless and thank you! We will find a way, and the strength, to endure," he wrote.
The RIEDC board Wednesday held an emergency meeting to discuss whether to provide additional assistance to 38 Studios to keep the company in business. While the board made no ruling on the matter, it is expected to consider the topic again on Monday.
[UPDATE]: Shortly after the publication of this article, 38 Studios uploaded a teaser trailer for Copernicus to YouTube. The trailer is a brief tour of the gameworld's environments and can be seen below.
@ikcizokm DO NOT !!! DON"T EVER DARE to go there! Baldur's Gate is the Masterpiece of Masterpieces and beside the fact that BioWare KNEW how to weave a story better than ANYONE out there how can you EVEN say that????Baldur's Gate went beyond Utlima and Wizardry in MANY scales! It was innovative for that time and all RPG fans acknowledge this. MMORPGs you say? I couldn't care less about this genre as it is A COMPLETELY different genre all together!Even today Game Devs that try to create RPGs try to surpass what Baldur's Gate did at that time not what Ultima I or Ultima online were at their time...(Specifically Ultima I was 1981 or so)
Ok, Kingdoms of Amalur was great, few games have enticed me to log as much playing time, I was bored out of my skull with Skyrim (the game play is extremely out-dated imo) while the world looked beautiful, I found the story non-existent. This company was built FOR THIS MMO, Reckoning was just something that happened to take place.... You have a 22x New York Times Best-seller creating the world's history, races, characters, etc, etc. You have the graphic design led by the creator of Spawn.... And you say this is a WoW clone? KoA played nothing like WoW, in fact I hated WoW in every incarnation, shape, and form... the world, story, design, everything was bland, the best thing they had going for them is their namesake (Blizzard), the out-dated level of Everquest, & timing. (Not to mention some stellar still animation work by third-parties)Let the game come out then judge it, if Blizzard and Bioware can continue to put out lackluster titles that sell one, and Skyrim can make a bazillion dollars with terrible gameplay... Give a chance for a new company to bring something fresh to the table once they work out their kinks. (And for the record, Baldur's Gate, as much as I don't need it to become an MMO would make the most sense out of all of them to become an MMO, with the Forgotten Realms setting have so much material... however that's exactly what Neverwinter is... )
Pretty tired of MMOs. This one will really have to be something different to get my attention.
It's not looking very different.
@Albaficas this is pre alpha before any tech came online from many months ago. They are using UDK and Bigworld engine.
KOA is one of the few games I have played in a while where I'm actually having a ton of fun. If this is anything like it, sign me up!
I just stick with WoW. I mean hate on it all you want, I have alot of fun in it and see why it has been around so long with so much success.
Really? These guys aren't learning a thing from the constant failure of almost all MMOs that are brought out, huh?
@Blanny123 that's because you're looking at an internal version of the game meant for the employees working on it before they added any tech. This video is months and months old.
Does anyone else feel like this whole thing between Rhode Island and 38 Studios is bizarre? I've never heard of a governor giving out a press release which included a game before this. Strange.
Its because they had to answer for why they gave them 75 million dollars in loans and the company bounced a load repayment check. Telling people they are solvent and are going to make their payments is important these days. :)
WOOT! Its Everwowoftheringsonline... THIS is the game I have been waiting for sooo long.
Oops sorry I nodded off.... what was the question again ?
trailer is very dull and not intresting. Please provide actual game footage. Class information and history. sorry to many other MMO to play.
I laugh at the people complaining about another MMO. Even though thier have been many of the same shitty shooters, sports, racing, and rpg games that have released, except for a few. Stop complaining about a genre that is miniscule compared to the many clones of the rest of the genres
I would'nt mind this. If it was just like KOA but harder and more massive. For the love of gaming don't make another effing WOW clone.
oh look!Another MMO!!! Why, i never expected this! I mean it's not like we have TONS of MMO already do we?.... yup you can insert sarcasm at whichever point....
@rhymesmatter wow, it's gonna be so awesome when they release madden 23 next year and call ur daddy 6: pick me up comes out.... Really there's not near as many MMO's as there are remakes of the same dang game. At least it's a new IP with a really talented staff of bad asses. By the way, this footage is old. Like mega old, a lot of those were starting zones and we've counted like 58 zones at least on another map.
@Joshuatree25m "There are not as many MMOs as Remakes of the same ip" you say???Plz mate spare me, how can you even compare a story based RPG title to a genre that doesn't have anything else to show than how good the Stadiums and players look! Those games NEED the infinite remakes so they can stay up to date and get flashier to attract their fanbase!Would you play ISS pro Evolution Soccer today?hardly! That's why they make Pro evolution 2013!There is no comparison here!I hate Sports games , i don't even buy such titles and on the contrary i LOVE RPGs (careful RPGs no MMO-RPGs) that's why i feel disgusted by the constant MMO-azation of great single player RPGs such KoTOR or Elder Scrolls or Fallout!Next thing they will actually DARE to create BALDUR"S GATE MMO which will make me CRY from frustration!MMO-izing every single game to make your pockets heavier is disgusting by default and as much as i like seeing FRESH titles like this one (cause you know this is not based on a previous Single pLayer but it's rather something COMPLETELY new) i believe that the Pace which MMOs are being released is like a propaganda to create MAINSTREAM RPG fanbase similar to the MAINSTREAM FPS fanbase (CoD and the likes of it) So YEA we DO have an abundance of MMOs and i DO think they should SLOW down with the subsequent release of such titles!
@rhymesmatter Did you seriously just call Baldur's Gate the "father of RPG's"?
If we're talking PC games, Ultima and Wizardy are, by rights, the father and mother of the RPG genre. And Ultima isn't just the father of PC-based RPGs, but Ultima Online was the first game to be called an MMORPG.
@rhymesmatter well they haven't announced anything specifically about the MMO mechanics publicly, but in Reckoning which is what this is based off of they greatly improved the animations and combat for RPGS, you can customize the game to your play style on the fly and you don't have to reroll your hero and start over if you screw up. You can visit a fate weaver and reset yourself and continue where you left off. You can wield any weapon combo in both hands regardless of class, and you can be anything you want from greatsword wielding magic user, or heavy armor wearing rogue, or a jack of all trades who is a weapons master. The mmo won't be exactly like the SPRPG, but I know somethings they've greatly improved upon from other games out there, but it's still hush hush, can't give out the secret sauce. I don't remember if I commented in your post or not, but this video is really old and they are fully playing it internally right now. It's not finished, but it's much further than this.
@Joshuatree25m The reason i mentioned Baldur's Gate mate it's cause i know of it's remake. They should STAY away of MMO-izing the father of RPG's.that would be just a travesty
You said something that indulged me more to this whole conversation..."New Mechanics you say?" Did they release a vid that introduce to some new mechanics of some sort?So far the ONLY real new mechanic i have see from an MMO was Tera..Everything else just a variation from WoW or L2...nothing new nothing innovative
@rhymesmatter actually the last Madden I played and own is madden 2002. I don't care about a different paint job so my new toon looks like someone new, because It's basically the exact game I've been playing for 20 yrs and I'm beyond tired. it's just a sticker over the same game. Sure there's some tweaks here and there, but really it doesn't bring anything new game play. I used to love Mario, butt holy crap Nintendo, he's freaking like 25 yrs old by now and they're still making this silly game about a plumber who finds magic suits that change his appearance to collect coins and find a princess he'll never get. For some stupid reason they fall in love for 12 seconds until the game is over until next time. At least for a lil while they explored different games with Mario, but it's just rereleased same game on every new console that comes out for them. As far as RPG's holy crap how many remakes of those do you want? We're on like our 16 or 18th Final Fantasy game now (including the Japanese ones not in US), I lost count with Dragon Warrior series after 9, but it's probably like 12 or 13 now, Wizardry I played for the first time when it was Wizardry 8, but there's probably 20 or more of those games. ES 5, I could keep going... I'm just saying I welcome a new IP, it's not so much its the same genre, it's a new brand, a new story, new heros, new game play mechanics, etc that hasn't been the same game I've already played for 10-20 yrs. I applaud them for making a SRPG and their MMO because 1st, this started 6 yrs ago and is only now about to come out, and they hired the best people in the industry at what they do to work on it. It's also for 2 different audiences since they've already released their first SPRPG with Reckoning, that adds broader market appeal, and different styles of games that they will make. The MMO won't be the same as Reckoning because they wanted Reckoning to be it's own contained experience but shared within the same world. You're probably half right about creating mainstream MMO's based on genre's, although China and the Asian market have been realeasing RPG MMO's for about 12-15 yrs I'm aware of, and we're just now seeing those catch up here in America. Oh by the way, they are Rereleasing Balders Gate this Summer, except its a remake of the original using the same engine with some tweaks. It won't be a MMO, (yet)
How come most of the mmorpgs now have smaller server when it comes to people inside. Theres not enough free space to explore like before.
how do you get over WoW?..
You re-imagine, modernize, and innovate the design.
you do what they did, only better..
im actually looking forward to seeing how this pans out..
Exactly learn from Lotro. They have actually made more money when they went free to play than when they were subscriber based.
I'd laugh if this weren't so tragic. A state governor announcing a game's release date, because he's invested the public's money in it. What a total joke. Be careful who you vote for.
@maxwell97 Actually the government has not given the company a dime. It's through their EDC initiative which uses private investors and grants them to companies to develop jobs in RI.
@Ringx55 Sorry, the R.I. taxpayers are on the hook for $75 million in 38 Studios debt if Schilling defaults on a payment, as he already has once but made it up by not paying his employees ( and still hasn't paid the employees ). Also, becuas eo f38 Studios and Schilling, the director of the EDC had to friggin' resign to keep the peace between angry investors and the current governor ( who was against the whole idea when the last governor approved the loan ). I suggest you actually look into the full story.
@mrboone01 actually friend, you're missing half the story. Don't believe the internet... There's a lot of bad press out there just because they hate Curt Schilling and no ones talking so they're making crap up. 38 Studios has hired the Sr people from practically every successful MMO for the past decade to work on this game. If it fails, then the internet may be at fault because everyone on staff has launched successful tripple A titles, or they are above average at what they do. Think Naughty Dog but for MMOs.
@mrboone01 It's actually closer to 112 mil just saying. And it's not if Schilling defaults on a payment, it's if his company either bankrupts or cannot pay them anymore. The fact is RI has not had to spend any tax payers money to fund 38S and it still doesn't have to as their next payment is next year for 2.5mil. That's a long time away. You don't know if he still hasn't made payrol, that's speculation. The director was not forced to resign, it is the obvious thing to do in the middle of a scandal.Regardless the entire point of them having to pay any money back without launching the said project they sought this out for is crazy. What's the point of getting a loan, then having to pay some back each year when the project isn't launched yet.
For me "Amalur" was a complete waste and dissapointment. I followed Todd Mcfarlane's work since he worked on Amazing Spider-Man (pre-Spawn). I hoped he would bring that magic of his to Amalur, but the game just looked Exactly like a carbon Copy of WoW, except with action game-play. No Thanks on this, I'll pass. When Mcfarlane gets his old style back maybe I'll take a look. Until then, Diablo 3 has everything I need for fun.
@RavenXavier if you watch any interview with Todd about the game, he will tell you these are not Todd Mcfarlane's games, this isn't his style or gig, he just wanted to convey the strong poses and make the animations dynamite, etc to stand out. He wasn't designing creatures or story, etc. That's for another game down the road another time.
@RavenXavier Raven please keep in mind Todd as well as R.A played a mentor role in Reckoning. They simply gave them the feeling of the world, the general idea how to make it work and their team took it from there. I'm sure Copernicus will have more of that feeling of Todd.
video looked good.. and i mean the visuals, very good colour palette and distinctive visual design.. i wish them all the best.. all that financial hassle with the state has cost them negative publicity.. and that too for the wrong reasons i suppose...
An MMO just seems really overly ambitious to me for a developer in their position. Especially since most MMO's these days dont do to well. If it were to flop i see them being in a really bad spot. It hard to have confidence that it will be a good MMO when they are having issues like this.
