Angry Birds dev reveals new game

Rovio Mobile reveals Amazing Alex, a new IP based on recently acquired physics-based puzzler; to be released in two months.

Rovio Mobile has revealed the follow-up to its supremely popular downloadable title Angry Birds. Studio CEO Mikael Hed told Finnish television network YLE today that the new game will be titled Amazing Alex and is due to arrive in just two months.

According to the report, Amazing Alex will be based on the physics-based puzzler Casey's Contraptions, which Rovio just recently acquired from developers Snappy Touch and Mystery Coconut.

Details are thin on Amazing Alex, but Hed said the title will boast an educational component and will focus on Alex, a young boy with a proclivity for building things. Platforms and a release date for Amazing Alex are not known.

When Amazing Alex is released, it will have monumentally large shoes to fill; Rovio this week announced that Angry Birds has been downloaded over 1 billion times.

"The quality pressure is high," Hed said. "We want to maintain the high standard Angry Birds fans have come to enjoy."

I'm excited for this!! I have Casey's Contraptions on my iPad and have been waiting for almost a year for it to be ported to iPhone. MUCH better than Angry Birds and my kids love it.

I have no problem with Angry Birds, but I find it astonishing the popularity it has. Because i tired the game many times and i find it little boring.

I don't say that it doesn't deserve popularity, but reading the comments of people who downloaded the game (Google Play(Android Market before)), I find that mostly people download Mobile games to "kill time" as many of them say.

So mainly people who play these games don't take them seriously they just use them to kill time.

@hellangel_boy you have a point, but all 'hardcore' gamers

started out killing time with games. can't say they haven't grown on us.

It's funny that Angry Birds is so successful considering there have been similar launching games in the past like it that were never quite as successful. I think the characters and variety in Angry Birds is really what sells it, not just the gameplay.

I'm guessing this will end up like Rovio's 80 bazillion other mediocre games no one's ever heard of (outside Angry Birds, Rovio has a long, terrible track record).

Okay, seriously I have to find a successful game out there, tweak a few things such as gameplay, put it on a mobile platform (smart phones, tablets, etc.), change the title and BAM! Here comes the money

(Seriously. Angry Birds. So simple, why didn't I come up with it instead? or you?)

So it's another physics puzzler made by Rovio that's copy...er, BASED off another flash based physics puzzler? Gee, they really are original!!

Yet it might still line their pockets. I bet with all their money they go seal clubbing and chameleon licking during their spare time.

They are very original people aren't they? But it just might put even more undeserved money in their pockets and make them richer...They probably go seal clubbing and chameleon licking in their spare time.

It's always like this: title makes a huge success, then publisher decides to milk it for good through a new game with similarities.

Well I find Angry Birds to be incredibly boring, but mob mentality will often lead things to great success, deservedly or not. But I am curious to see if this company has any brand recognition or if its only Angry Birds that has any market presence.

@Sepewrath I didn't enjoy playing it either, but I don't think it's mob mentality.  It's just that the game was a blast for people who typically aren't gamers.   And there are a ton more non gamers out there than us!  But I do think that these types genuinely loved that game.

I actually kind of like Angry Birds...

Granted, I'm sick of hearing about it, but I'm also sick of hearing the constant whining from "hard-core gamers" about how it ripped off Armor Games' Crush the Castle. Okay, sure they did, but Crush the Castle really isn't that great of a game. Angry Birds streamlined the game, made it funnier, and made it more innovative. If Crush the Castle really was better than Angry Birds, then people would've bought Crush the Castle. It's like you guys have turned into a bunch of hipsters, "Yeah, I liked Crush the Castle before it was cool to like physics based artillery games."

Why comment on something that you care nothing about? Mobile games are an up and coming trend that are beginning to take a huge toll on the mobile gaming market. Why wouldn't you "hard-core gamers" care about a potential shift in the gaming industry? At the very least stop bitching about it.

@Gamingod2272 It's the same reason that older people complain about "back in my day, _____." Self-proclaimed "hardcore" gamers just don't feel that these casual players have earned enough social capital in "games" to be considered part of the group, and so they whine and moan simply because there's nothing that they can do about it.The easiest way to express that ire comes from claiming that these new games bring nothing new to the table, and are simply ideas that "we" already had, (which is silly, because "we" didn't make the games, "we" only play them.)

The thing is, however, it does all just come down to different perspectives. "Hardcore" gamers have their POV, and you have yours. But how does YOU whining about their whining make you any more noble than THEM?

So true.  I guess I'm a pretty serious PC Gamer, I love overcomplicated crap like DCS A:10C...but I've seen enough of Angry Birds to get what makes it appealing.  It reminds me a bit of early arcade games, in that the relationships on-screen are very easy to discern.  But AB waits for the player and doesn't attack him, perfect for the weird in-between space the most popular mobile games seem to inhabit...where you might have the thing on for a few minutes here and there throughout the day.

@ToTs_00 From the looks of it, I think it's a contraption to get a ball to press the red button at the top? It reminds me of a computer game I used to play years ago, 'Amazing Contraptions' or something like that.

Oh so Rovio's new game is a "Incredible Machine" clone. Thanks now I see it.

@fox_fury Hmmmm, I'm more familiar with Sierra's, "The Incredible Toon Machine." I'm pretty sure they're similar without Al the cat and Sid the mouse..

Not gonna be excited if they make a blatant copy of another flash /indie /java /unity game.

But i would be excited if they made an Angry Birds with a different genre that's actually possible to get into, like a RPG, or an online version of the 2D Worms game.
