Main character named Edward Kenway, game set in Caribbean on multiple islands, according to new report.
After a poster for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag leaked yesterday, more rumored information about the game has emerged.
The Examiner reports that the main character in Black Flag is Edward Kenway, the father of Haytham Kenway from last year's Assassin's Creed III. Edward is described as a privateer, assassin, and "occasional" pirate.
The report further claims that Black Flag will be set in the Caribbean. Players will reportedly get to travel to multiple islands, including Jamaica, Cuba, and the Bahamas.
The Examiner also suggests Black Flag is presently running current-generation technology, though Ubisoft has plans to release the game on future platforms.
Darby McDevitt, whose previous credits include a host of Assassin's Creed titles, is said to be Black Flag's lead scriptwriter. His LinkedIn profile states he is currently working on "unannounced stuff."
Writing on Twitter yesterday, McDevitt said, "Is it that time again? [Assassin's Creed] fans getting all apoplectic 'n' stuff. Squirming and squealing. Love it."
Earlier this month, Ubisoft confirmed it was developing a new Assassin's Creed game for release during its fiscal 2014 (April 1, 2013, to March 31, 2014). According to CEO Yves Guillemot, this game will take place in a new setting and star an all-new hero.

This better be good, I was expecting a whole new character/era/location. I know these all apply to this game but it seems too closely related to the last game to be assigned a AC4 title. Also! I want more tall buildings to climb! What happened to the super tall buildings and towers in AC1-2? It's also become more run and gun, which is a lot of fun don't get me wrong, but there was something satisfying about planning your kill in AC1 that I haven't felt at all recently.
I think that the producers were inspired by the song Kokomo of the Beach Boys (Aruba, Jamaica...)
I liked the ship sidequests on AC3. But I will be really sad if by adding more sea-play, they subtract what I enjoy, which is the free roaming, and being generally awesome ON land. I will be so disappointed if they sacrifice their good gameplay for "Not-Sid Meyer's Pirates, 2.0"

Since I played naval mission in AC3, I asked for a pirate game but I didn't expect it to be AC. :|
1 Like Sounds lame. Why go to a time so close to what we've already seen? Try Feudal Japan. I mean, a ninja main character sneaking around killing samurai? No brainer.
As I understand it, all they have to do is change the name of the game to "Piracy: Black flag" and tons of people will stop complaining...
@fredlamirande you are so right, i have never witnessed a site like gamespot which has so many negative and whining comments... games industry is sometimes full of shit i'll give them that, but they seem to hate on everything
I heard a rumor that AC: Black Flag was changing the main character to either Henry Rollins, Keith Morris or Dez Cadena.
This series was a brilliant successor to Prince of Persia but in all honesty I think it has run its course. The location changes every time with a few extra perks added to the mix which in all honesty does not improve the game play in any sense. Scope doesn't mean LOTS OF FUN. The location feels empty and generic, I stare more at the minimap than I do at the actual in game content. The series can't be revived, unless someone comes up with a truly breathtaking new idea for the series but seeing that this is a yearly release...well.

I lost a lot of interest in the series after AC2. I was really excited for it and it was one of the games I wanted most that holiday season, but when they released AC:Brotherhood I just didn't care anymore. Something about spin off titles just lose it for me. Just like I was there day 1 for God of War 3, but I have no interest in the newest game.

I have had my fill of AC titles (skipped Brotherhood and Revelations). I am going to retire from it after AC3 just like I retired my COD days after MW3. It isn't that the games aren't good, it is just that I don't want to play the same game again only with a different setting. I think most games are best left at 3, anything more than that, and usually the games begin to stagnate. I would rather see Ubisoft dedicate themselves to a new IP.
1 Like @ZOD777 Brotherhood and especially Revelations added a bunch of new things to do that weren't in ACIII. Brotherhood is probably the best AC in terms of adding a bunch of fun stuff to do, it's not just changing the setting.
@PlasmaBeam44 It is still more or less AC 2.1 and AC 2.2 in my mind. My point is that the games at their core, are still essentially the same game. A couple of new features isn't enough to get me to keep playing the same core game.
i always thought ac1 was cool because it was about assanitations and stealth but it was so boring and then the others it was just a bunch of combat. i want stealth assasinations

5 Like Hatham Kenways father isn't a big enough change, I'd rather see a chinese assassin or something. I wouldn't mind if they just dropped the whole desmond story now either and just focus on an epic ancestor story
@Ayzed Aye, they can drop the whole animus too. It'll be more interesting if I were to play with the characters in their actual time without the help of the animus. I don't mind if a HUD of a game is not explained why it's there.

@MidNightStrikes I could say the same thing about ninjas. WHY Ninjas? It's all personal taste, and for as many people that get hard-ons about ninjas/Japan, there are just as many people who love pirates/sailing.
@Scarab83 @MidNightStrikes To answer your Q: WHY NINJAS? Because I was already the captain of a ship and used cutlass swords and felt all pirate-y in AC3....AND because ninjas are the coolest thing ever.

5 Like I thought i could see that little Chinese girl in Embers in one of the AC games. and it would be soooooo fresh feeling for AC fans to see a female assassin and a different geographical and historical condition.i would imagine hearing people speak in a different language when my assassin walk around, just like AC1, that was really fun. and new stealth weapons like Needles, daggers... and real kungfu combats would be better. and we could also see something about epic Ezio's later life. But i was wrong!
@hassanem Sadly, I'm not seeing much chance of Shao Jun getting a console game at this point. Perhaps we'll at least see a vita game or a novel. It just seems like such waste to introduce her and this whole back story for the brotherhood in Imperial China and leave it at that. I hope Ubisoft will at least give us some sort of closure to her story.
2 Like @hassanem You should REALLY play Assassin's Creed: Liberation on the Vita. It has all the features that you want: main protagonist is female and African-French, new setting (Louisiana)
I can only face this as a 'expansion' not a new whole game, Assassins Creed alaways had those expansions, Brotherhood, Revelations, while the main new stuff was just Assassins Creed II, III, never with a crap name after a number.
The naval missions is awesome, but if they milk too much will lost the appeal, soon we will be recruiting drunk punks in tortuga and training to be assassins? Give me a break.

@DarthLod But every game has been great. Some better than others. of course. If the yearly cycle is not affecting quality, I'm all for it.
1 Like @DarthLod You're welcome to have an objective opinion. I find the Assassin's Creed games to be extremely rewarding and the story is at least decent. Overall it's just really fun. It's not milked to death at all for fans. I will continue to buy them yearly as released.

You do realize that AC is handled by more then one Ubisoft studio? They have multiple dev teams that work on it, not just one studio that pumps out a new one every year back to back like many other publishers do (cough EA).
Supposed marketing material for next entry in the series suggests it will be a high seas adventure with pirates.
