Revolution Studios planning PC, Mac, iOS, Android, and Linux release for adventure game sequel.
Adventure game developer Revolution Studios is planning on making a sequel to 1994 adventure game title Beneath a Steel Sky, despite the fact that its recent Kickstarter page for Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse fell short of meeting its target goal.
The original plan was that the studio would greenlight Beneath a Steel Sky 2 if the Broken Sword Kickstarter goal reached $1 million or higher. The final goal reached $771,561 with 14,032 backers.
According to an interview from website Develop (via The Verge), Revolution co-founder Tony Warriner said that the company was delighted by the huge interest in the franchise. "[We are] currently discussing design ideas for this project which we plan to go into development following the release of Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse."
The company plans to make a PC, Mac, iOS, Android, and Linux version of the sequel. Currently, a remastered version of the first game is out on the iOS app store.
@wavelength121 Once you're out of that factory area you'll experience a game with a great story, great humour and very nice characters and setting so do give it a second shot, it's completely worth it! Also, it's free for any person registering on GoG.com, just mentioning in case anyone wants to give it a shot. I bought a tonne of great adventure games there and just love the site, apologies for the plug if it offends anyone.
While I'm happy to know there will be a "Beneath a Steel Sky" sequel (I really liked the first one), I can't avoid thinking they intended to release it regardless of Broken Sword result. It's like they decided to put that "one million dollar" milestone on Kickstarter anyway so they could push people into giving them more money - regardless if it was needed. If they reached the goal, they would be "awarding" their eager fanbase, if they didn't reach, they would be releasing it anyway claiming they "really care" about their fans and were "amazed by the interest".
I don't know... I believe Kickstarter can be an amazing way to make possible games that would be, otherwise, disregarded and discarded by traditional publishers (myself, I'm backing seven projects there), but I'm suspicious of all that "stretch goal" talk.
"Hey, we need 500k to make our game, but if we reach one million we'll put more story and one new area into the game"...
Would the hell will I know that is the truth? How will I know this will actually enrich the game and provide more content? It's not like the game is already done and we know exactly how much we have "now". It's a game in development, "one new area" is too subjective. Just take a look at ME1 and ME2 areas: ME1 areas are huge when compared to ME2 areas. so, "more areas" may mean nothing, after all I can create ten small areas instead of six bigger ones, spending the same development time, putting the same content in terms quantity and quality and still be able to claim "I have more areas!" And "more story"? That'sis even more subjective! And "more races"? Or more classes?
In the end it's like they're thinking "if we don't promise more content for our backers, we'll end up with only they amount we need, so we need to come up with some dubious promises, that will make them backing us more and more, after all, it's not like they have any way to measure our promises, right?". I really don't like that aspect of some projects on Kickstarter.

i asked them on Kickstarter if they were still going to do this...
& they had stated that they were already working on making it possible...

@Ravenherder The goal had reached . There was also their own funding website which was accepting pay pal and combining the funds of both KS and their site results more than 800,000 $ .
BaSS is an instant classic. Humorously witty while offering Blade Runner-inspired sci-fi elements made me wonder why a game like this went under appreciated for so long, up until it got a remastering for the iPad. I never thought this wonderful gem needed a sequel, but hey, Revolution Soft never disappointed. Hope to see that sequel pretty soon!
i played and beat this this for the first time recently... what are the odds.
