Big in Japan August 1-7: Kirby Mass Attack
Kirby's latest handheld adventure second to Sega's new soccer game in latest Japanese sales chart; 3DS slips to fifth place in hardware race.
Japanese gamers love soccer, puffballs, and exaggerated takes on Iron Chef, if the latest Media Create charts for Japan are anything to go by.
The week of August 1-7 belonged to the debut of J-League Pro Soccer Club o Tsukurou 7 Euro Plus. According to the tracking firm, the Sega-published soccer game for the PSP sold 101,022 units and finished atop the software charts for the week.
Just below the soccer game was HAL Laboratory's new Kirby game on the DS. Titled Kirby Mass Attack, the game made its debut in second place with 74,915 units sold. Described as a "side-scrolling real-time strategy" game, Kirby Mass Attack has players use a stylus on the DS touch screen to guide multiple clones of Kirby to go from point A to point B, navigating through pitfalls and solving puzzles that obstruct their path. Fans of the puffball can check out the game in English on September 19. For more information, check out GameSpot's recent preview of the game.
Sitting at third place is Toriko: Gourmet Survival for the PSP with 62,882 units sold. The action title is based on the current hit manga that started in 2008. The series' premise is about a man named Toriko who hunts down rare animals using his martial art skills and cooks them for dinner.
Other notable software releases include the debut of last year's Epic Mickey in Japan, now under the moniker "Disney Epic Mickey: Mickey Mouse and the Magic Brush." The 3D platformer designed by Warren Spector sold 27,257 copies and is seated at sixth place. Yuji Naka's latest title from Prope Studio, Family Fishing, is just below Epic Mickey with 22,365 units sold. Last week's former number-one title Rhythm Heaven dropped to fourth place with 62,597 units sold, while former number-two title Queen's Gate: Spiral Chaos for the PSP dropped to 13th place with 12,445 units sold.
As for hardware, the Wii finished the week in third place, behind Sony's first-place PSP and runner-up PlayStation 3. The Wii sold 17,004 units on the week, while the PSP and PS3 sold 35,619 and 18,338 units respectively. With an announced price drop in the works, the 3DS dropped to fifth place with 4,132 units sold.
