Nintendo strikes software top spot again with 2D platformer; 3DS XL on top of weekly hardware sales.
Nintendo seem to be dominating the top sales spots during Japan's summer break period. According to the recent Media Create sales update, the number one game for the week of August 13 to August 19 was New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the 3DS.
The game sold 152,026 units. Critics praised the title for its levels and controls, but panned it for its reliance on retreading glories of past Mario titles. For more information on the title, check out GameSpot's review.
The other Nintendo titles securing second and third place were Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 for the DS and Dragon Quest X, respectively. The former titles sold 55,787 units, while the latter Wii RPG sold 45,470 units. There were no new titles debuting in the top 10 for the previous week.
On the hardware front, both versions of the 3DS were the top-selling consoles for the week. The 3DS XL was at 66,412 units, while the 3DS was at 45,445 units; the total combined is 111,857. The PS3 was at 16,277 units, while the Wii was at 15,640 units.

Love seeing this sort of info. No real surprise regarding the games list - the big surprise to me is that even in Japan the PSP still outsells the PSVita!
I contributed to that 66,412! It is awesome. Seriously, you should get one. It even fits in your pocket still.
Nintendo's coming back decently here. It either comes back swinging or falls back into the danger zone.
@KBFloYd How do you end up with these opinions?
@superxtreme101 Sony insists there will be no price drop this year, but that and a better line up of games will help it. Vita doesn't have any heavy hitters yet.
Read the reviews again, majority of reviews have praised the quality of the game, but just disappointed with the lack the originality that nearly all new Mario titles offer.
Heh. Nintendo Fanboy bullets. I love it.
-I want Dragon Quest 10 more than Mario, Pokes, GTA5, anything!!!
Where is the Big In Japan August 20 - August 26th? This was a weekly article just a few weeks ago now it's hit and miss. What is up with that?
That little picture should read "Despite releasing Super Mario Bros. 3 again, Mario games still get the gold."
Proof on why it was smart for Nintendo to release two versions of the 3DS because they're selling side by side, not in competition with each other :D
@abHS4L88 Those combined are over 100K! WOW! Just WOW!!
Hopefully those "alienated" have read the news that this is the ONLY 2D Mario game appearing on the 3DS so if they want their 2D Mario fix, this is the only offering they're going to get. It is subject to chance BUT seeing is how both the Wii and DS only had 1 2D Mario title, it seems likely.
If you're in the neighborhood, see if anyone at Sony is awake enough to read this.
GET THE VITA ROLLING, SONY!
