More like 3ds sales almost 5 times quantity of PSV. Sony do the math.. More region-centric 'genre' games = good region hardware sales.
Nintendo's kart racer holds onto pole position ahead of Monster Hunter 3G as PS Vita continues downward trajectory.
2011 ended with a thud for Sony, with the publisher's newly released portable system, the PlayStation Vita, sagging in sales on the Japanese software and hardware charts for the week of December 26 to January 1. Conversely, Nintendo's 3DS and the just-released Mario Kart 7 were the top earners for the week, according to the latest Media Creates sales update.
The PS Vita numbers continued to drop in its third week, from 72,479 to 42,648 units, with no Vita titles in the top 20 sales list. Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational was the handheld's best seller, finishing in 28th place for the week, one spot ahead of Uncharted: Golden Abyss. On the flip side, Sony's other consoles continued to do well in Japan--the PlayStation 3 held second place, with 67,199 units sold, while the PSP was just behind with 62,746 units sold.
Meanwhile, Nintendo sold 197,952 units of the 3DS for the week. Mario Kart 7 was in first place, with 109,463 units sold. The racing title edged out the 3DS iteration of Monster Hunter, with 100,042 units sold. Super Mario 3D Land was in fourth place, with 68,483 units sold, while Inazuma Eleven Go was in sixth place, with 47,938 units sold.
The only new release among the top 20 was Idolmaster Anime & G4U Pack Vol.3 for the PS3. The virtual idol simulator bundle sold 18,992 units in its debut week. Other noteworthy highlights include the recent Musou Orochi 2 for the PS3 (third place, with 73,526 units sold) and the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII-2 staying strong at fifth place (61,202 units sold).

"Monster Hunter 3G / Capcom / 3DS / 100,042" ...that explains it lol, Sony, throw a Monster Hunter on Vita, heck put MH3P on there and Vita will sell like hot cakes!
I wish sony would learn faster. PSP, PS3 and now the VITA all suffer from the same mistake. Even Nintendo learns faster than they do. and that is saying something. Just look at those numbers, 8 out of the top 10 games are on Nintendo's machines.
3DS sold four times more units then PSV in December? Yep that PSP Vita is selling like hotcakes! What is the PSV WIFI to PSV 3G sales difference? IMO Sony is going to drop the PSV 3G very soon at this rate. The DS lite sold 28? LOL why bother putting it up there?
@dxdevilex0 I am well aware of the price cut. If Sony can't afford to give the PSV a price cut it is dead. I am a huge Sony fan but it's just too much right now. They need to at least bundle it with a memory card or a couple of games.
the price of the psv and a game i can suk up and will pay, but pay for an overpriced memory card? A DEAL BREAKER!!! hasta la never sony psv.
@zumzier SONY (???)is a Japanese company too......some people..........and a crap ton of people have PSPs here(in Japan) too. 3DS sold like crap at first too because it was too expensive. Now it sells a ton. PSV will most likely do the same.
Shouldn't be a surprise that the DS is selling more than the PSP in Japan. I mean almost everyone in Japan has a DS. That's were it's from. This is like being surprised more people watch the NFL in America than, say, North Korea. When it launches in North America I'm sure that it will fare much better.
@franzito The only reason PSP is out selling the Vita is because look how cheap it is,hell its a nice peace of hardware for the price right now.
You know something,I don't want to sound like a fanboy, but I can't help but point out the fact that many nintendo haters were saying how the Vita would "kill" the 3DS when it got here.Where are they now the what's happening is kind of....the exact opposite? It's not that I mean any hate to the Vita,I'd like to get one someday. But the numbers are simply there.Good luck to them for the North American launch.Maybe their luck will turn, but as I said before,it seems the majority of people can't bring themselves to spend that kind of money for games. Not enough people to keep a system afloat anyway.
@metalkitten wrong you can play psp games and soon ps1 games on the vita and that is just your opinion that there is no good games on the vita for me there is at least 9 games at launch that I want which is allot for launch
im not surprised - the psp launch games sucked and who want to pay that much money for a game u cant even play ur psp games on? like what are u gonna do with the system? take pics til u wait for a good title? what is worrying is that japan is the country that actually is the only place where psp was a success so if not even them pick up vita soon.... but like someone says - to not have any rpgs in the launch games nor announced for the vita (except 2 ports as far as i know - but one of them will go to ps3 too and the other already is on ps3) is a huge failure in a rpg country like japan - not sure what sony was thinking to be honest... im sure at least western will buy just for uncharted and then sit and roll their thumbs til next ps3 spinoff title personally: i want rpgs!!! or any weird game that really use the new functions of the system! (think how trauma center were such a great game series for ds)
Sony needs to make the Vita affordable ASAP cuz if they wait any longer they'll have to not only deal with just the 3DS but the 3DS Lite as well (we all know Nintendo is gonna make one sooner or later).
@Xplode_77 Xbox 360 finally beats a system!!!! Wait, MAKE THAT TWO SYSTEMS IT BEAT!!!!!!!! And it only took six years. :)
@shadowhunter0 Well that's all personal opinion. For example, some people say buy Ford trucks and nothing else. Others say no,Dodge is the only way to go.Or Chevy. And many of them are convinced it's worth it to buy the $60,000 version with all the bells and whistles, heated and cooled leather seats, and beer coolers in the fenders. Others just want the basic model for hauling their junk around or getting to work. And that's with a practical object like a vehicle. Technically, what we're talking about here is a toy. Video games are not needed for life or to get to work or anything important at all. Basically, they really aren't worth anything. But we're willing to pay some money for something we enjoy,so we do. How much you enjoy it,and how much you want to pay for it are up to you,but in general, and in this economy, most people don't feel games are worth that kind of money. The sales of both the Vita and the 3DS show it. After the initial hype, sales die down. My whole point is,things are looking like it'd be a difficult sell to get everyone to pay $250 or more for a handheld.
@dankhff they also have Donkey Kong,Kirby,Kid Icarus,Metroid,Super Smash Bros,Pikmin (which has been announced for wii u) and their new ip pushmo.
I know this is Japan and the Japanese are very tired to tradition and repeating things over and over, but Come On Sony.
Good software is lagging at the moment on the Vita, but it'll catch up. Good software will follow good hardware, and good sales will follow good software.
i smell price drop on the psv. 250$ system wifi+70$ memory card+ tax= no its not a 250$ reasonable price mindset. history repeats itself once again. some people talk some smack against the 3ds like " ohhh the 3ds is gonna get smashed by the ever so powerful and popular psvita". just what happened to the psp and DS back in the days in which the DS sells more.
to everyone complaining about how bad the psv sold it is third on that list and everything didn't do that well that week
@ShadowofSonic actually on the vita most if not all physical games saves on the game card itself so if you plan on buying mainly physical version of the games all you really need is an 8gig or maybe even just a 4gig card and yes it does suck that it doesn't internal memory but what can you do you can either get a vita or not I plan on getting a 32gig card with mine and all digital version of the games since they are going to be cheaper
Vita=$250. Memory Card for Via=$70. 3DS= 170$ and games save themselves. And it's got an SD card in there.
@Wormkid_64 it was in a podcast and the people on it are trust worthy and I'm not just talking about the power of the vita but also all the features it has and the games at launch and announced for it also makes it worth that price and everybody that I have talked to that owns or has played on the vita it is worth that price you just have to look at what you get with the vita
Despite Nintendo sells more... I prefer the games for ps3 and 360 because it have a large list... Because most of the games that Nintendo have is: the series of Mario and Zelda
Again, some people grabbed the wrong box. 28 of them to be exact. Not to dis the DSi,I loved mine, but the 3DS is everything it was and more. @SadPSPAddict That's what sort of hold me back. I mean, the 3DS came with a 2 gig SD card, has decent internal memory, and can be expanded with up to a 32 gig card. Really a 2 gig card is all you need, but if you want more,a 4 or 8 would do the job,and they're inexpensive. Those Vita cards are pricey, which wouldn't be so bad if it came with some memory out of the gate.
It can't be said enough. Never doubt Nintendo. It looked pretty bleak, but give them time, they usually make around 60% of their annual profits in the holiday season anyway. I hope Sony learns the same lesson Nintendo did. The majority of the world doesn't want to pay that kind of price for a handheld. If I'm ever going to get a Vita, they need to get the ball rolling, because if it flops,I'll miss out on what appears to be a great piece of hardware. @shadowhunter0 I know for a fact the Vita is more powerful than the 3DS,but GPU,CPU,RAM,and all that other junk is not what justifies price.I bought the 3DS at full price, and in reality,it would have been better to pay the new price. But I got really pumped and I know I'll get my money's worth eventually. Generally though,$250 bucks is just too much. Where'd you hear about the 8 apps?Link please.
it'S amazing that the PS2 still sells. I'd prefer the PS2 games library to be released in it's entirety on the PSN network. That would be something.
the only reason why the 3ds is doing so well is because of the 2 new Mario games and I'm sure that the vita sells will go back up if you know what you are getting with the vita it is well worth the price and it is at least twice has powerful has the 3ds you can have at least 8 apps running on it with no problems at all
Like many early adopters of the 3DS I was almost regretting the purchase and was considering selling it, of the launch games only SSF IV and Samurai Warriors appealed to me and I mostly bought it for Ocarina of Time 3D and after finishing it my 3DS gathered dust....until Mario 3D Land, Shinobi and Mario Kart 7 came, plus some great eshop titles like Pushmo and Mighty Switch Force, now I simply can't stop playing it and discarded the possibility of selling it from my mind. :)
They say this is because of the heavy 3ds software hitters like Mario and MH3G, this was totally unexpected, Sony's games lineup is great for the West but not for Japan, they should have released a FF and a Monster Hunter, and was Persona 4 released there?
Wow the vita seems like its in real trouble. By the time they get some decent games, Nintendo will have a huge installed base lead and they will be competing with phones/tablets as well. Got to give Nintendo credit for biting the bullet and cutting the price the way they did to get the 3ds sales momentum going.
Interesting. I think the "hidden" cost of having to buy a memory card is perhaps the deal breaker. It should be shipping with a least a 1GB card for the list price IMO!!
