All they are talking about is how the ds and psp sales are skyroting. But what about the U.S. Is Mario and Luigi:RPG 3 in the stores. NO! the DSi just launched April 5 when in Japan it was on November. I don't even think the psp games are even sold in America.
Top five positions in Media Create's weekly software chart belong to PSP and DS, as Kidou Senshi Gundam: Senjou no Kizuna Portable debuts strong on Sony's portable.
Handhelds are extremely popular in Japan. How popular? According to Media Create's sales recap for the week of March 23-March 29, seven of the top 10 software best-sellers were for either the PSP or the Nintendo DS. Though it was outpaced in terms of hardware sales by Nintendo's handheld, the PSP did play home to the top-selling software for the week, as Namco Bandai's debut of Kidou Senshi Gundam: Senjou no Kizuna Portable and Nippon Ichi's Makai Senki Disgaea 2 Portable led with respective sales of 85,000 and 39,000 units.
DS software mopped up positions three through five, with Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Stardust Accelerator: World Championship 2009 heading the pack at 37,000 units sold for the week. Nintendo's Mario & Luigi RPG 3!!! continued its strong sales run, shifting an additional 36,000 units, while Super Robot Taisen K slipped from its top slot from a week prior, selling 32,000 units.
Also a top seller during the week-ago period, Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2009 for the PlayStation 2 placed 27,000, and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for the PSP followed with 24,000 copies sold. Two PlayStation 3 titles--Koei's Musou Orochi Z and Capcom's Resident Evil 5--took the eighth and ninth slots with 21,000 and 17,000 copies sold, respectively. Rittai Picross rounded out the week's top software sellers with 16,000 units.
With handheld software selling well, the hardware also proved to be in demand. Nintendo's DSi and DS Lite combined to sell 65,800 units during the week, with Sony shifting 54,100 portable machines. The PS3 led consoles with 22,800 units, followed by the Wii with 17,300 machines. Microsoft's Xbox 360 again assumed its rear position in the Japanese current-generation console race, selling just 4,800 units.

@Tomboy_666 "Cud u just zip it with yer 360 fanboyish nonsense. the topic is about handhelds rockin japan, not about ps3 and 360 sales. GET IT !!!" you obviously haven't been reading the post on this thread beause if you have then you would have read so many bad comments about the 360. therefore you should tell the other people who are doing that and if you can't handle truth about the psp beating ps3 then you shouldn't be here lol. Can you read? because the title says "Big in Japan Mar. 23-29: Handhelds lead software, hardware" The word hardware menas that it includes more than just handelds. it also includes consoles therefore we are allowed to talk about the console sales and if you can read the article also mentions the consoles sales.
@SalarianChemist You can't even see it when you have it in front on your eyes....The Playstation 3 is doing well and you don't have one game to compete Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Killzone 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 ... so lacking gaming software ? You could say that the first year but ... I only own a Playstation 3 ... and I've been busy playing a lot of great games !
Very interesting, I always thought owning a good quality handheld was better then owning a console. Handhelds are a lot more flexible. You game inside, outside, in car, on train etc etc....I have a PSP and I really appreciate Sony going the extra mile and adding the other great features....especially web browsing and digital audio....two of the things I do the most outside of gaming. The handheld market should get a little more attention from game makers. Peace & Love yall
@10679: Cud u just zip it with yer 360 fanboyish nonsense. the topic is about handhelds rockin japan, not about ps3 and 360 sales. GET IT !!!
I personally love my PSP, and I wish the US would get more of the games Japan gets. Not that I have a shortage of great games to play already. I've always loved my handheld systems but this gen in particular, I've strongly considered giving up console gaming completely and just sticking to my PSP and DS for gaming. There are some great titles available for both handhelds that have more innovation and replay value than most games that come out for PS3/360 these days.
@SprSynJn " think he means that the PS3 is either selling more than, or the same as, the 360 in most other regions but the U.S." if that was the case than winner-ps3 is wrong becasue ps3 is only beating the 360 in japan. 360 is beating ps3 in every other region like other region which consists of europe and the US. The most surprising thing about the recent sales in japan is that the psp is selling alot more than the ps3. i have both machines and psp is worth handheld every created . the last game i played was crisis core and since then i haven't touched teh psp becasue there are so liitle good games and alot of bad games and that machine is beating the ps3 hahaha. i knew that the 360 won't sell that well in japan because the japanese hate american products and vice versa. the funniest thing is that teh ps3 has only managed to sell 3million units in japan considering its a japanese product whike a foreign product like the 360 manged to reach the 1million mark which is impressive.
im just waiting on microsoft to step up and CRUSH Sony into the ground.....but hey i guess thats kinda mean lol GO BILLY GO
o and if u played KH u should know who Utada Hikaru is and she lives in NY if any creepers care....LOL
Wow i can't believe that PSP is still on top despite the games US release is so few and late..i guess having i highlight real graphics is not that good if is does'nt have the cool stuff..and nowadays handheld really kicks ass even the graphics is not that great..and i was hoping to buy 360.i'm living in the philippines here Xbox is more of a show than the ps3 why?because fake cd comes here with cheaper prices so people prefers to buy it more than the ps3.
@ ASK_Story You don't understand at all why Japanese are wary of the Red Ring Of Death phenomenon with the Xbox 360 (from the same company that gave them the disk eating original Xbox)? You don't undestand why they'd want built-in Blu-Ray capability? Really?
I live in Tokyo and all I can say is this: half the people don't even know what an XBOX is. The other half just doesn't care. Portables are the way to go here (esp. PSP rt now). Trying to make the 360 a popular console over here is like trying to make Hiraku Utada the pop princess of America (bet u didn't even know who that was lol same as the Japanese w/ 360).
It's pointless debating this-gen anymore. With sales reaching 20 million for the ps3 (with the xbox and wii already surpassing that level), there is no real loser this-gen. Sure the wii has sold plenty, but software sales have been average at best. And while the xbox has under 10 million consoles sold more compared to the ps3, the difference is almost negligible at software level, where software sales vary by mere thousands either way (multiplatform titles). Third party developers will look at that and say, best option would be to go multiplatform, that's where the money is. All this means that all three companies should be able to compete again in the next iteration of consoles (unless OnLive hits off), which is all that really matters in terms of hardware now.
@ahpuck In total agreeance. This is relevant aswell, because it shows trends toward console sales in other countries. For example, The PSP sells really well consistently in Japan, but not aswell in the US.
"@winner-ps3 whats your definition of sells really well everywhere besides the USA ?" I think he means that the PS3 is either selling more than, or the same as, the 360 in most other regions but the U.S.
"How does this effect my life and why would we care about such a news story? Gamespot grabs ANY news related to video games and publish them on their site" . . . what do you want them to write about? the latest cooking utensils? has it occurred to you that maybe, just maybe, they publish video game news cause this is a video game website?
It seems that Xbox 360 stills can't beat PS2 up to this moment after all the big titles have been released.
yeah ps3 ahead of wii for a month now, i think. wow! ps3 sells really well everywhere besides the USA : ( damn economy!
@TXMostWanted " And 360 has been dead over there since its inception. Give up M" its pretty impressive that a western console like xbox360 sold one million units in a japan while its kinda embarassing that a japanese console like ps3 sold only 3million units in japan. Whats even more embarassing is that a japanese console like ps3 sold more units in a foreign country like america than it did in japan :D
@josef8 the funny thing is that a supposedly superior machine with a superior graphical power is loosing to a handheld that has inferior graphical power to the ps2 and that inferior handheld is thrashing the ps3.
@ChaosXeno "PS3 because it obviously outsells the 360 in JPN" thats nothing compared to 360 beating ps3 in america and europe. " the 360 did have a 18 month lead in UK meaning 1 million lead isn't too amazing" like joke man said "Sony has been in the gaming business with the PS1 since the 90s. They have a fan base that should be several times the size of Microsoft. More people have owned a Sony console than any other systems made. Even though they have been in the game for years and years before MS ever thought about making a console and this advantage should have given them a boost that would make the 1 year headway of the 360 seem like a joke." Not only that , since the realease of sonys ps3 the 360 has been beating the ps3 by 2million units which tells you that the win in japan is small and doesn't make a difference. it seems that the only people whoknow anything about videogames are frazzle00, joke man,me and SalarianChemist
Well w/ Japanese people commuting half the day on subway trains, no wonder portables are the way to go. And 360 has been dead over there since its inception. Give up M
Nice to see PSP and DS duke it out this week by taking over the charts. Only if it was like that down here instsed of DS winning every single time leading to more shovelware. Wii seems to be frozen in time but that'll change when ACC PS3 bundle comes out widening the gap between both consoles. Such a shame for 360. I guess it has nothing to offer now that Vesperia is coming to PS3 in Japan. It might get another chance to lure the Japanese when FFXIII is released on it.... oh wait, forgot its PS3 exclusive.
SalarianChemist Everyone in this forum is a whole lot dumber after reading your post. Yuck_too Those numbers are true but, the 360 did have a 18 month lead in UK meaning 1 million lead isn't too amazing. Now back to salerian the 360 didn't take #1 microsoft has been # 2 so far in both generations. The Wii does count, I don't know why you are attacking the PS3 because it obviously outsells the 360 in JPN. Also Microsoft has had a loyal following before they joined the video game industry they are freaking MS man. They can crap in tin foil wrap it up and sell it as earrings for millions.
How does this effect my life and why would we care about such a news story? Gamespot grabs ANY news related to video games and publish them on their site. So what if people are purchasing games such as Kidou Senshi Gundam that will almost never make it to the North American or European market?
Im not surprised DSi is doing so well I pre-ordered DSi and already bought three games for it. Im surprised all three have Wi-fi.
@fps_d0minat0r "LMFAO it got beaten by PS2 ahahahahaha.....wot a shame, xbox" hahahaha ps3 got beaten by the psp and the defeat is by 31300 units. "wot a shame" because psp is weaker than the ps2 in power. at least the ps2 is only beating the 360 by 400 units.
As for those comparing the DSi and the PSP, did you forget about the DS Lite. That's an additional 8,400 as they are all the same system. Just like PSP sales include every iteration they have, the DS is the same way. So, it looks like the DS has almost 12,000 more.
I love how people go on and on about how Microsoft had a 1 year lead into this generation of gaming. However, 2 things that these people don't address are the facts that 1) even though the 360 has been out about 1 year longer, it is still outselling the PS3 worldwide with each month's sales and 2) Sony has been in the gaming business with the PS1 since the 90s. They have a fan base that should be several times the size of Microsoft. More people have owned a Sony console than any other systems made. Even though they have been in the game for years and years before MS ever thought about making a console and this advantage should have given them a boost that would make the 1 year headway of the 360 seem like a joke. Alas, even though Sony has had a massive fanbase years in the gaming business trying to get it right, etc. MS still manages to outsell the PS3 even though it has been out a year longer. Sales diminish over time, they don't continue to destroy the competition and keep growing. Besides with Sony loosing money the way it is, they need to do something drastic to even begin thinking next gen. Here is hoping a good company can use the fanbase they have and knowledge of console making to make a comeback and wow gamers across the world!!!!!!!!! Love live Sony and Microsoft. As for Nintendo--I have lost faith........
The fact that the 360 has outsold the PS3 by almost 2 million units since the release of the PS3 is clear evidence that Sony's victories in the Japanese market are insignificant. Anyway as soon as the next Wii gimmick comes around, the PS3 will return to its second place position in Japan.
