Activision's sales juggernaut shooter beats out new One Piece game and Level-5 RPG.
The popularity of Modern Warfare 3 has gone beyond North America and Europe. The latest Activision shooter has beaten out two prominent Japanese intellectual properties made by well-known publishers in the recent Media Creates sales update: the PlayStation 3 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 180,372 and is placed first; the Xbox 360 version was at seventh place, with 30,467 units sold.
The shooter was praised for its climactic campaign and variable challenges in the game's Spec Ops mode; check out GameSpot's coverage for more information. Japanese gamers should note that the version on the charts is the subtitled version with the English voices intact. The dubbed version will reportedly be released next month. The publisher of Modern Warfare 3 in Japan is Square Enix.
One Piece Gigant Battle! 2, the 2D fighting game sequel based on the One Piece anime/manga franchise, debuted at second place, with 116,062 units sold. The game features story content from the Post-War and New World arcs in the series. New playable characters in the fighting game include the time-skip versions of the main protagonists and former support characters from the first game, like Coby and Smoker.
The PS3 version of Ninokuni also debuted on the charts, as the game placed third, with 67,032 units sold. The role-playing game features the artwork from renowned animation company Studio Ghibli and an Imajinn system, which allows players to breed fantasy creatures in their own way for combat. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage on the title.
Other highlights on the list include the debut of Saints Row: The Third. The PS3 version placed fifth, with 36,222 sold, while the Xbox 360 version placed 14th, with 15,380 units sold. The PS3 version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was at 10th place, with 22,436 units sold; the Xbox 360 version was presumed to not sell more than 8000 copies and was nowhere within the top 20 Media Creates list.
On the hardware side of things, the 3DS and PSP were still in the top spots of the hardware sales chart. Nintendo managed to sell 96,219 units of the former. Sony's numbers for the PSP and the PS3 doubled since the last sales update, possibly due to the availability of the red-and-black value bundle for the former and the new colors for the latter. These colors are gold and white (Ninokuni PS3 bundle), scarlet red, and splash blue.

Even the Xbox 360 version is in the top 10. Why Japan, why? I think it things like these that got Miyamoto to step down and work more on game development. He saw how Activision and their fanboys are raping the industry and decided to do something about it.
i also bought mw3 but just played it once in 2 weeks...maybe lots of people are like me??? now i regret every cents i spent for it..:(
Well I geuss the japanese are just mindless and stupid as us now huh!? or did the japnese recognize a good game? The same thing happen with gta series there blockbusters all over the world! So to all the haters out there...IN YOUR FACE!!!!
well MW3 is doing it big beyond Europe and America.this game has all the makings of a smash hit and it did.what more need i say.
The large gap between PS3 and 360 sales for MW3 shouldn't surprise anybody. The 360 was a commercial failure in Japan. Japanese consumers don't buy foreign brands, which is why MW3 is published by Square-Enix there, Activision couldn't sell sushi in Japan. Even EA can't sell in Japan, most of their games are published by Sega there. That said, I'm impressed MW3 has done so well.
@Soothsayer42: If this was before FFXIII and XIV was released, I would agree with you. :P But they are still one of the biggest game companies there so I'm not surprised.
@soulless4now it was published by Square Enix for the Japanese version... i guess Japanese put a lot of faith in that company :P
That's 180,372 ex-patriots from western countries living in Japan then, we know what they're buying...
Since when did Japan get into shooters, especially ones made in America? This has to be a sign of the apocalypse or something.
Funny I hear about this news the day I got my hands on a copy of MW3...it being black Friday and all. Now if only Japan exported more of their games instead of importing ours :)
@vader501st Im not hating on shooters, im just objecting to what your saying, shooters are good, their hogging this generation, but just because MW3(Square enix WTF?) got big in japan, doesnt mean "they made a smart choice"
Ninokuni PS3 is running at one third of what Ninokuni DS pulled off and Namco have only comfirmed PS3 version for translation?
Sqaureenix pub mw3 and sold better ps3 and activevision need to get pub in japan but i guess they too scrooge to get pub in activevison in japan so i guess sqaureenix get some money for this shooter
Heck,MW3 wouldn't have done this well if it was not published by Square Enix. And 3D Land still doing after so many weeks already.Go Nintendo. :)
To be fair the campaign wasn't bad but the spec ops is deffinately the highlight I'm guessing Skyrim hasn't been released in Japan yet i would expect that to outsell MW3 in Japan
Hey wow if you like final fantasy check out the final fantasy experience union.. we could use all the help we can get... final fantasy has a negative aura surrounding the name in the west.. I have faith final fantasy will always be great :) I love all the games...
wow that's quite a feat but not really surprising since tox and type 0 have been out for a while now so most jpn gamers are playing those and waiting for ff13-2 to drop next month. and i am with espernay on the splash blue ps3. :D so do want.
So this is why my BF3 servers don't have many people on it...ALREADY. Fack this shlt. Disappointed in my fellow gamers here in Japan...
My wish to God for competitive multiplayer: Crysis 2 PC graphics, Killzone 3 surrounding details, Universal weapons, Theater mode and combat training! :D
This is most disturbing news indeed. Not because I hate shooters (I don't), but because these are early signs that their own products are no longer as appealing as foreign ones. God knows I don't wanna see Japanese culture be influenced by western culture.
@hotdiddykong You may not like shooters, but Crysis 1 & 2, Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare (Yes! can you believe it?!), Halo, Killzone and a bunch of other games which are "nothing more" than shooters are among the best this generation has to offer. Hating on them will not change the fact that they're very successful, good franchises. Also, do some research and please note that it is indeed surprising that a "simple shooter" is selling very well in Japan, given the fact that they're not very into this kind of genre. So yes, a smart choice indeed, to open up and try someting different for a change. In the west, shooters are very popular, much like RPGs in Japan. Very, very surprising to see that.
Well thats suprising. @vader501st "Smart Gaming Choice" Nothing is a "Smart Choice" Everyone has their own prefrences to genres and games, MW3 is nothing more than a Shooter game.
Ugh. The Modern Warfare series makes me barf. All previous Call of Duty games (except 3), however, were great.
Finally, the japanese made a smart gaming choice by putting MW 3 up in the charts. Never thought I'd see this, I'm surprised, in a good way.
