Irrational Games' creative director Ken Levine says PS Vita version of franchise is "in the hands of business people right now."
The BioShock game for PlayStation Vita is no closer to release, but it's also not been scrapped entirely. Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine told IGN this week that the game is still possible, but its fate is not up to him.
"That is in the hands of business people right now," Levine said. "It's something I’m still interested in, and people ask me that all the time. Right now I’m just sort of waiting to see what the business people come up with, and that’s sort of out of my hands at this point. That’s something that I think has a lot of potential. The game idea we have has a lot of potential. It’s just a question of [if] their stars all align."
Levine announced BioShock for PS Vita during Sony's 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing. Months later, the developer said the game is still "in the paper design stage," and it would not be a port of BioShock Infinite or a rehash of the first two BioShock games.
@endorbr As much as I would like to agree, I'm afraid I can't. While I like my Vita, it is already heading down the same road as the original PSP. The 3DS(which is itself still underperforming) is crushing it in sales, and the Vita's holiday lineup has been pretty miserable in terms of generating sales and excitement. I realize that games like Persona 4 Golden and Little Big Planet got great scores, but they are not big enough sellers. It would have been better for the Vita for Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified and Assassin's Creed: Liberation to get those high scores. That would have driven more consumers to purchase a Vita, and ultimately led to more AAA titles to be released. Sure a Vita Bioshock would sell to the "enormous market" of PS Vita owners who love Bioshock, but not enough cover the cost of a true Bioshock game done right on the Vita. I would love to be proven wrong, but it looks like a rough road ahead for this game and the Vita system itself.
"and it would not be a port ofBioShock Infinite or a rehash of the first two BioShock games..."
Either Irrational will buck the trend or they are planning the same kind of scaled-down rubbish that we've seen appear among the Vita exclusives so far (with a couple of exceptions).
The Playstation Vita Catch-22. People complain that there's no games, so they don't buy the system. Developers don't want to make games because no one has bought the system. And around and around we go.
Still haven't picked up a Vita. If Bioshock: Infinite for Vita ends up releasing, and it ends up being different from the console version (and it ends up being good), that would make me consider the purchase.
So far, though, Vita has had a lot of the same problems the PSP did -- a dearth of compelling software, too many ports, too many console-like games that I think don't make the transition to a portable device well.
@IceJester45 Ive only seen 3 ports the games the they are making that arnt ports are trash resistance burning skies, call of duty declassified, assassin's creed liberation, silent hill book of memories, even need for speed most wanted wasnt the same as console's let hackers make the vita play ps3 games easily with the graphics too. The ports they have had have been good in my opinion metal gear solid hd collection, mortal combat, marvel vs capcom, blazblue, persona 4, street fighter x tekken.
@blair71 The fighting game ports are about all I'm interested in. I have no desire to play a console game or a dumbed down version of a console game on a handheld unless it's a fighter or game in some other pick-up-and-play genre.
That's awesome. One of a handful of original titles for the Vita and it gets held up by a bunch of suits who only care about if the game's sales will put more fuel in their yachts and private jets.
I hope "the businesspeople" (whoever that may be) decide to bring this game out. Heaven knows the Vita could use a Bioshock title in its library.
first they assured us it was coming after they finish bioshock infinite...and now...now its in the hands of business people???the vita needs games damit!
The PS Vita's killer app? I'm hoping the ideas in my blog come to fruition and they make this one amazing, not rushing it like they did with COD Blacks Ops Declassified, that is IF it does get made...
Can't see this happening until Vita skyrockets in sales.
Damn shame though, vita could easily handle a port.
Don't worry, those stars won't align. I very seriously doubt it will come to the Vita. It is getting avoided like the plague by third party support. It almost makes you think it's a Nintendo product or something?
@godzillavskong Not true at all. Some great titles are on the way and sales are rising worldwide.
Never mind the special limited edition Vita for Soul Sacrifice. It will kick up sales quite a bit more.
It's still vaporware 15 months after announcement. So they haven't thrown the idea out completely but it's clearly off the back burner and is now in the freezer down in the basement.
Now if Bioshock Vita is going to be some half assed afterthought then maybe they shouldnt bother making it....
Leaving it in the hands of the Business people means this game doesn't have a hope in hell. Bioshock PSvita is doomed.
Not sound like an asshole towards the Vita but maybe there making sure the Vita doesn't have a chance of "dying" before they start making it.
@ToTs_00 It would be rather ignorant to think the Vita is "dying" in any form.
It has burst in sales recently and is steadily rising worldwide.
Make Half Life 3 for the Vita!! Your system will fly off the shelves!! Duh Sony Valve (Scratching there heads))..
@Kelemhuma I doubt it will happen. Valve has NEVER made their games exclusive to a system. Always pc-first and port it to consoles *maybe* later on.
I agree with you 100% games sell systems. Make some awesome games to show off this hardware in the palm of your hand! Come that?s what everyone is waiting for listen to the forums. I will incite one very strong example the Ps3 which was not selling that many units until developers got on board with this thing. I mean the Vita is amazing bringing Dx9 quality graphics in the palm of your hand!Anybody listening Valve, Sony, I'm talking to you. wasn't the Ati Radeon 9800 128 mb 3d same as the Vita?
I mean they showed off this card with Half Life 2!! Come on developers get on board We want a Half Life 2 for the Vita To show this hardware off!!!This kind of quality games is going to sell your system . We will start taking your system serious when you do . ((As a current Vita owner I am unhappy with system for this reason Sony listen we are telling you why you system is not selling the way you want it to.. Listen to us more quality games.
All the vita needs is one 3rd party developer to make an AMAZING game that sells really well, and the floodgates will open and we'll get loads of 3rd parties developing awesome vita titles...
If this game isn't a shitty remake but instead a reimagining of the Console/PC version then it might be enough to push Developers to make actual good games for the vita. That is if the game gets made. Honestly the only reason the Vita's failing is because Devs are too lazy to make actualy decent games for it. The Hardware seems great on it but it's not being used to it's full potential.
Lazy? Have you been checking into their work habits? It could also be that the tools they use for making games on the Vita aren't very good. Or it could be the classic developer "we won't invest much until more Vitas are out there" and gamer "we won't buy a Vita until more games are out there" cycle. That cycle has killed a lot of great hardware in the past.
"in the hands of business people right now" ........translation......"the game is cancelled but don't blame it me please blame the business suits because nobody likes business guys anyways."
@SDBusDriver1979 translation of your comment "I hate the vita and I hope they don't make a game for the vita"
@shadowhunter0 Reading too hard into my comment. I'm just as butthurt as the next person that there is no Monster Hunter for Vita.
@shadowhunter0 @SDBusDriver1979 Technically there would be two with the inclusion of Ragnarok Odyssey, which actually has released already. Still, I can't help but feel uneasy what the publisher has to say about Bioshock on the Vita if sales for the system don't pick up to safe expectations(for them). Would definitely love to see something new and ambitious for the system.
@SDBusDriver1979 I was doing what you did and there is a game kinda like MH coming to the vita Soul Sacrifice
@DarkNeoBahamut cross buy only works if it is the same game and they already said it isn't going to be and since they haven't even started working the vita game it wont be out for a long while these guys take their time and release amazing games and not pretty much the same game every year like most sport games and the cod games
