Canadian developer taking submissions from would-be game scenario scribes for a new NeverWinter Nights module.
For years, BioWare has been known for its intricately plotted role-playing games. Many authors of linear stories have looked with envy at the branching plotlines of Baldur's Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Jade Empire. Some hardcore fans have gone as far as to pen their own fan fiction featuring characters from these games.
Now, those same would-be scenarists have a shot at helping craft the story of an all-new BioWare game. The Canadian developer has posted a new Web page that bears the enticing headline "The Contest That Might Become Your Career." The unnamed contest calls for submissions of ideas for a new NeverWinter Nights module, no longer than 3,500 words "including dialogue and setting." The deadline for submissions is January 30, after which three winning modules will be selected by a panel of judges, with five others picked by the NWN community. "These top eight submissions will be reviewed by BioWare senior staff members Kevin Barrett and James Ohlen with the intent on finding and hiring talented writers," reads the page.
Details for the contest can be found on the official BioWare Web site.
Quote bdub20791 now if they only did that with the ending to halo 2.. ___________________________________________________________ Erm,..that didn't make Halo 1,.or 2
Yeah, right. They need some random guy from the internet to give them story ideas. No, they need more writers to work within the concept they already have.
Bioware is just run out of ideas, and now they want you to give them a story so they can reap the benefits. KOTOR and the sequel both were lame story wise, the gameplay was sweet though. Anyways, all they are going to do is take your ideas and put their name on it, game companys always do this...
They don't need gaming ideas. They need more writers to handle a plotline they're already working with. That's why there are tight restrictions; they want prospective employees to be able to work under a larger plot.
Interesting. They should have these kinds of things with all of the gaming series. Let the fans give their gaming ideas.
If they are really running out of stories, it doesn't really bother me. Creative people will always come up with new ideas, though it may take time. But still it's pretty cool that regular gamers can submit stories and ideas for a game. I mean think about it, that could be your work that's getting praised by the gaming community.
I think this is a great idea, gamers are the ones that play the games, so it's only fitting that someone would come up with a contest like this... too bad it's for NWN and not KotOR.... :(
WOW, Cool. I have never played a bioware game, but I think I will enter, lol. I am a good writer and this is just what I am craving, I will get started straight away, wow, I am very very excited.
Bioware is great. It's a shame that I'm not very good at writing, or I would enter this contest with the quickness. Good luck to all those who enter.
I'm simply going to have to find a way to enter this contest. This is going to be difficult, though, considering I've never played Neverwinter Nights, let alone worked with it.
PH34RMY1337: I am sorry but that is just unintelligent. Haven't heard of Mass Effect or Dragon Age have you? I mean, it seems like just when I have taken care of one ignorant person, another even more annoying one just pops up out of the blue. I mean c'mon people.
I hear you on the H2 ending bdbub. And this does sound like a cool competition though, I'm so going to enter.
Please send the stories in. This may be a big chance for an aspiring game designer in waiting. What do you possibly have to lose? I've not been particularly impressed with the quality of Bioware RPGs, especially their cut and dry distinction between two polar opposites of character disposition, but at least Bioware has offered to accept ideas from fans who may not have the expertise to use the Aurora toolset fully to implement their great ideas themselves. It will be funny that the panel of judges do a American Idol type of panel where they can lambaste some incredulous suggestions lol.
I wish I either lived in Canada or wanted to move there. I would send in a story. Ive got plenty of ideas. I should send one in anyway.
I'm starting already. Biowares games have stolen my teen years, to work for them would be a dream. I got a little money off of writing, maybe I have a chance.
I agree blackIceJoe, this seems like a wonderful opportunity. I don't think it's a case of Bioware running out of stories, rather, it seems they're simply expanding their team and are going about the hiring in an innovative way.
wish I had actually played Neverwinter Nights, I'm not gonna bother. I have Bethesda Softworks about 2 miles up the road from my house, I'll try there instead.
Just about anything would be better than the Story from the original NWN single-player campaign. NWN was ALL about multiplayer and customization.
I thought this was Bioshock at first... >_> How does a game developer who thrives on stories just run out!?!
Getting desperate for story BioWare? Ha! Hell, why don't they just make it a "wite-the-story-as-you-go" game? I mean, they are so innovative with that kind of stuff.
hmmm....thats a different idea. At least it means that the developers have some interest in what the fans think.
