Senior creative director for Warhammer Online to talk about online game development.
The upcoming Game Developers Conference China will be held from November 12 to 14 in the Shanghai Exhibition Center in Shanghai, China. The organizers recently announced that the keynote speaker for the event will be Paul Barnett, senior creative director of BioWare Mythic.
His keynote address will be called "Global Reach and Local Limits – Paul's Personal Truths About Online Game Development," and it will be about how online play has affected game design in terms of geographic proximity and focusing on culture. Barnett's contributions to the game industry include developing Legends of Terris, the largest text-based game in Europe in 1995, and designing Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.
Other highlights of GDC China include talks from Canabalt's Adam Saltsman and in-depth looks at iPhone titles Fruit Ninja and Doodle Jump. For more information on the last GDC-organized event, check out GameSpot's coverage of GDC Online.
@Smackpwn, You are exactly right, it's sad that Mythic Entertainment had to drop to Warhammer standards after creating DAOC. DAOC was the best pvp game ever made then, and it is still the best pvp game ever to be created. Developers in the future that create pvp games need to take a look at camelot and understand the three fraction system, and everything that made that game great like also adding TOA. It's sad, but its reality. Hopefully, another company can step up in the future and produce a game like DAOC. It would be a crime to never see a DAOC 2. Just not right.
Paul's got a big mouth and a tiny brain. Never again will I listen to a word he says. I am terrified at the thought that he landed (kept) his job as a creative director at EA Mythic. Unless of course that means that they lock him in a room with a lot of paper and some crayons until the day is over.
Once Warhammer online came out and everyone saw what a failure it was and paul barnett was, no one takes him seriously anymore, he and his company has become a joke, i miss the old mythic where DAOC was king of mmo's, now i cringe every time i hear the words "mythic entertainment"
