Blizzard dates Burning Crusade

The expansion pack will be released in the US and Europe on January 16; subscriber base for WOW reaches 7.5 million worldwide.

Ordinarily, Blizzard Entertainment sticks to a strict release date of "when it's done" for all of its titles. It appears the company's World of Warcraft expansion pack, The Burning Crusade, is getting awfully close to done, as Blizzard today announced a January 16 release date in the US and Europe for the add-on. It will also be available "in a similar time frame" in Korea and Singapore. Dates for mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau will follow shortly after, with announcements being made "in the near future." The Australian and New Zealand release date for The Burning Crusade will be on January 17.

The massively multiplayer online role-playing game add-on had previously been scheduled for a pre-Christmas release, but developer Blizzard Entertainment recently announced that it would be putting the schedule back to extend beta-testing and give the game its "finishing touches."

Some of the extras available for Burning Crusade include being able to advance character levels from the previous maximum of 60 to 70, two new playable races (the Blood Elves and the Draenei), a new profession (jewelcrafting), new weapons and armour, as well as "many enhancements to player-versus-player action."

A special collector's edition of the expansion will also be available, including a coffee-table book of The Art of Burning Crusade, an exclusive game pet, a behind-the-scenes DVD, an official soundtrack CD, a trading-card starter deck, and exclusive cards. [UPDATE] Blizzard has updated the ingredients of its collector's edition, and it's good news for WOW goodie collectors. The CE will actually include two trading-card starter decks, and three exclusive cards.

Blizzard Entertainment also announced a new milestone reached in the virtual world of WOW today--it now has 7.5 million players worldwide.

WOW is a awsome game, one of the best, and the expansion looks awsome, but Blizzard has a delaying problem, and if you did not know, you should though, they said they want to have expansions come out yearly, now great idea considering Guild wars, and EQ2 have many expansions, but I do not see it happeni9ng, they cant keep one date, they have to go change it, so they will have a lot of problems with expansions comming out yearly

Great post, eanbowman. Stereotypes are for people who can't think for themselves. This game has players of all sorts. Some are losers for whom the game is their life, but I'm willing to bet that most players are totally normal gamers like every other gamer out there.

Was that 7.5 million subscribers an all-time single month high or is that where the new consistent subscriber base is at now? If they maintain that level of support they will be officially too rich for even EA to takeover, which is a good thing. And as many have already stated Blizzard, can you please put out a new Diablo or Starcraft sometime before 2010? Heck, I'll even settle for a "when its done", as long as it is in the works.

Actually Burning Crusade was originally scheduled to release in July... not just before xmas. I quit playing in April, expecting a late release, judging by the minimal screenshots / trailers / advertising that was available at that time, or not available rather.

chrisdojo i bet they delayed release on purpose...... there have been a lot of lvl 60's on (seems like they are just standing around doing nothing) just waiting for BC to be released. now they have to pay for an extra month for an "active account" when BC does come out. OOOOR it's to iron out problems discovered by Beta players and to make sure it's nicely polished off and readyfor launched.

BigDawgSteve420: Some people take it to extremes, but I bet I get out and party with friends about 10x as much as you ever do, and I have a level 60 warlock and raid two nights a week. I also work at a web design/marketing company and manage to have a photography hobby. I also get out to go mountain biking, walking, play basketball, etc... I'm by no means a loner or although I might be a 'nerd' since my major is computer science. People who play WOW come from all walks of life, buddy. Way to reveal your small-minded nature for the masses by playing into a misguided stereotype... :P P.S. I played WOW for a few minutes while waiting for a bus to another city in an internet cafe and several hot girls came up to me and told me how much they loved the game. I was kinda shocked to know that real girls, and not ulgy ones actually play... and they're in my own city! P.P.S. It was my ex-girlfriend who got me to play the game in the first place. That's an odd one. At first I was reluctant as I was worried all my time would be devoured. I found that I was able to regulate myself well, though.

This is nice and all, but it's strange that there are no new character classes being introduced in the expansion.

WOW is a great game there is no doubt of that but the game is 2 years old hanestly they should lower the monthly fee at least to $9.99, and in 4 years should be $4.99, or make World of Warcraft 2 Using the oblivion engine.

I agree...sort of...there are 7.5 million accounts, but not necessarily that many active playable accounts. Not to mention the numberous players that buy multiple accounts...Only Blizzard knows the actual current population of WoW, but you have to admit 7.5 million copies sold for an MMO is staggering in itself...think of how much they are raking in from monthly fees...

"World of Warcraft's Customer Definition World of Warcraft customers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or purchased a prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the installation box bundled with one free month access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as customers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Customers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules." http://www.blizzard.com/press/061109.shtml

"Eadara It means 7.5 million active accounts. Active accounts meaning that they are paying for it. If it counted all acounts then it would be alot higher. There was a period last summer when WoW would always be the top selling computer game for the month however blizz never announced a rise from 6.5 mil till 7 mil. That was due to the fact that there amount of people quiting and the amount joining was about equal. Posted Nov 9, 2006" You're getting this information from where? 7.5 million accounts. This counts in the bans, inactive, and frozen accounts. So if you played the 10 day demo, you are being counted. Also, I've heard that 3 million accounts are from just China. Ni Hou, farmers. - Maybe you should read the Blizzard site to see what they count as players before you make any remarks. As for your Chinese remarks its Ni Hao and no blizzard does not have 3 million accounts solely from China. You should get your facts straight before commenting

WOOT! :D So I'll be able to make the opening night then. :) With exams starting on Jan 25, I was afraid that I wouldn't get to make the opening night. :D YAY! :D Wow, 7.5 million, that's alot. :O Keep going Blizzard! :) @ big_questions: The monthly fee is like $12 bucks a month, even if they take a couple of bucks off of the monthly fee, that'll save people, what, fifty bucks in the long run? IMO, it's fairly priced. Heck, I'm a 16 year old whose income comes from a weekly allowance, yet I still find this monthly fee to be completely unnoticable (I pay in the 6 month bulks).
