Korean MMORPG creator Bluehole Studio staffs Western publishing, localization arm with Warcraft, Aion alum; fantasy-themed TERA to debut at GDC next month.
The Asian gaming market is flush with home-grown massively multiplayer online role-playing games, and a portion of those will soon be making their way to the West. This week, Korean MMORPG company Bluehole Studio announced the formation of En Masse Entertainment, a new subsidiary focused on bringing "global" online games to Western audiences.
En Masse is led by a number of veterans of the Western MMORPG scene. The publishing arm is headed up by Dr. Jae-Heon Yang, who previously served as chief technical officer at NCsoft. Patrick Wyatt, whose extensive credits at Blizzard Entertainment include work on the Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo franchises, serves as En Masse's chief operating officer. EA, Microsoft, and NCsoft vet Chris Lee fills the role of vice president of publishing. Aion producer Brian Knox will reprise that role at En Masse.
En Masse's first project will be Bluehole's TERA, a fantasy-themed MMORPG that emphasizes real-time, dynamic combat. While details on the game remain largely under wraps, players will be able to choose from six different races, who must "work together for the common good." En Masse also said that individual player actions will have an impact on the "balance of power" in the game.
TERA is scheduled to launch for the PC in Korea this year, with the Western rollout to follow. En Masse intends to debut the project at the 2010 Game Developers Conference, which takes place in San Francisco from March 9 to 13.
you can only expect something Great here..its from the L2 team...oh and btw you guys know that this game will not be point and click..it will be more a la Fps style you got a aim and you hit or shoot what you want...look realy nice to me
Lol this isn't even related to Blizzard that much, weird that it's in the article's title. Oh well. Seems interesting, but I have a feeling gamers are looking for something different from the other MMOs that are out right now.
Looks like there's some good people here, let's hope they make something cool. Not another WoW-esque ripoff.
@ fel1693 Facts are not racist, neither are stereotypes for that matter. Eastern games tend to be slow paced and tedious while western games are so focused on action and simplification you can blink and the game is done. Both sides tend to go to the opposite extreme and both frankly lack deep well tuned mechanics as they are building to arbitrary themes and not on a per project basis ....
I always welcome the arrival of a new mmorpg, though most disappoint many of them offer a nice substitute for us gamers that have done there time with wow and are looking for something different.
@ k0r3aN_pR1d3 : Guild Wars is completely opposite a grindfest. WoW at least masks all it's grinding in quests so it feels less grind-y, and it has raids which break up the grind. Same with Atlantica. Not all mmorpgs have to be grinding games. That is the kind of thinking that has destroyed the genre.
sorry but i would rather pay to play wow then play guild wars.. hate me for it but there it is.. the litle boulder that can easily be walked over has a magic wall around it....ok.. im fat and i could easily just go *step* im on it *step* now im off it on the other side...
@paperwarior17 Dreamfall Chapters was put on hold because Ragnar Tornquist is involved in a MMO called The Secret World.
Blaze787 "I've long lost all hope in Japanese and other games developed in the East. Audiences in those regions have way too much tolerance for monotony and tedium. The fact that one of their games is going to be translated by a few former Blizzard vets means nothing." "audiences" in "those regions" have way too much tolerance for monotony and tedium. You got to be kidding. what about audiences "here in the west" all "we" do is play fps and bloody games because it's "cooler". Hilarious comment. and kinda racist.
This may be one I might look forward to after having played Guild Wars and Aion, but I will have to see more for this game before I decide to add it to my want list. The ones I am currently waiting for are Stargate Worlds, Final Fantasy XIV, and of course Star Wars The Old Republic. I know TOR and FFXIV will be do out this year and SGW is still waiting to be finished, but these are on my want list as far as new MMO's go.
"Screw this, Blizzard is the reason i stopped playing MMOs, as to also why I'm looking forward to Secret World" Secret World? Are you serious? I have no faith at all Funcom can deliver a quality MMO. They released Age of Conan, and shortly afterwards announced they were working on the Secret World, meanwhile AoC remained seriously broken. I'll never touch anything they make again.
One of these years a great new MMO will come along that will finally have great graphics and be fun. I want a game with a mix of Aion's graphics and WoW style gameplay from back before the burning crusade was released. That would be a great game.
I'd be more interested if it weren't just a localization / translation. Blizzard and NCSoft vets have a LOT to offer in the way of experience in MMOs - good or bad - and it's going to waste by simply altering something that already exists.
I doubt there is a single MMO that isn't a grindfest. At least Korean MMO's have some pretty whacky stuff. And free.
I've long lost all hope in Japanese and other games developed in the East. Audiences in those regions have way too much tolerance for monotony and tedium. The fact that one of their games is going to be translated by a few former Blizzard vets means nothing.
@RossRichard I can't speak for the art design, as the "anime" look is extremely popular in the East and, well, extremely popular in the west, but it might not necessarily be a grindfest. After all, they are trying to appeal to a Western Audience. All I can say is just wait and see. Maybe it will be or maybe they'll throw out something amazing. Only time will tell.
Screw this, Blizzard is the reason i stopped playing MMOs, as to also why I'm looking forward to Secret World
i'm not going to get my hopes up. still waiting for arenanet to unleash GW2 (the only ex-blizzard devs that seem to know a thing or 2 about making online games)
I was kinda interested until I read the implication that it will be a Korean-style MMO. Guess itll be another grindfest with really feminine males.
with the EXCEPTION of Aion? You must be out of your mind. What level are you at? There are graphs that basically show at level 35 how big a wall develops in the experience gain, and there isn't enough content.
I'm pessimistic. With the noticeable exception of Aion, Korean MMOs are generally boring grindfests. I don't know what old school games you're talking about, though. Games like Asheron's Call and Final Fantasy XI had a larger focus on groups to do anything, it's only in the past few years that solo play has started to be rewarded by games like WoW, City of Heroes, and the like.
@ Blank2k2 All depends how you wish ti play and what you want to play. Nobody forces you to play a game that doesn't interest you. Terra will be another fail MMO ever since WOW generalised and dumbed down the MMO experience. Give us an Ultima Online sequel or something similar. Piss these pathetic Korean MMO's off.
Tera sounds like another group-based mmorpg... I'm sick of group-requiring mmorpg's. Back when i had no social life it was fine, but these days im older and busier, waiting an hour or more for a group to goto an instance etc bores me & eats into my play time....not to mention these days the instances etc are so slowly paced its actually difficult to stay even remotely interested. I preferred the old school mmo's where solo players could become legends in there own right without ever asking for a group, every single person had there own little life in the game. Rather than sharing the same washed out experience over & over day in day out for a pair of "epic" boots with a random group of people you'll probably never speak to again....the same thing everyone else has been forced to do.
NCsoft i still want my TABULA RASA BACK!!!!!! or at least let out the stuff necessary for starting up a free server..
