Description

We're always focused on what's next: upcoming games, behind-the-scenes reports from industry events across the world, interviews with game developers, and a few surprises here and there.

Today, Ricardo, myself, and Jim Maybury headed down to Los Angeles for a look at the games that Sony will have at E3 this year. Ricardo will be along in a bit to discuss his part in the whole E3 judges stuff but, as a non-judge, I was just in town to check out some cool games. And, make no mistake, Killzone 2 is cool. I hadn't seen the game since Leipzig last year and, just like everyone, I've still got the memories of that legendary E3 2005 trailer (good Lord, has it really been three years?) still in my head.

As it turns out, the pre-alpha demo build of Killzone 2 on-hand today did feature a remarkably faithful opening that hearkened back to that trailer--though it should be noted that the level on which that trailer is based (and the demo level I played today) is actually the second level in the game. For whatever reason, that fact surprised me, as it always seemed to me that frantic frenetic pace of the E3 trailer was exactly the tone you'd want to set for the game early on. Punch the player in the face early, and let them stretch their legs after their nose is bleeding, and all that. As it turns out, Killzone 2's first level will be a training tutorial of sorts before dropping you into the real action of level two.

Still, whatever level it is, it certainly packs a punch. As you glide in on your lander, having watch the enemy take out multiple allied landers all around you, you can't help but wonder what else will be in store for you once you hit the ground. In fact, what's waiting for you is tons of vaguely Nazi-looking bad guys with orange goggles, intent on blasting you to Kingdom Come.

Things I Liked:

- The setting. The mechanical architecture of the surroundings adds a proper level of militaristic grimness to the surroundings. Even the muted color palette of greys and blacks works for me, though I'm not sure it would work for an entire game.

- The feel of the weapons. This one is always tricky for me; it's a mixture of animation, sound, and feedback from the controller itself, and it's a balance that not ever game gets. Even Call of Duty 4 didn't meet the standards set by games like Half-Life and Half-Life 2, which are the epitome for me. Killzone 2's weapons feel satisfying right away.

- The enemy AI. One time, this futuristic Nazi guy tried to flank me, sneaking around a corner to try and get behind me so he could put me down. Luckily, I caught him moving around the corner at the last moment. He caught a bullet in the face for his trouble, but I appreciated the effort on his behalf.

Things I Disliked:

- As much as I dig the sci-fi Nazi look of the enemy troops in the game, there's not much in the way of variety.

- I wish the assault rifle I favored had more bullets in the clip. Seriously, even when trying to contain my fire to short bursts, it seems like I was reloading way too much.

- The twist-the-valve wheel mini-game. Here, you had to press L1 and R1 to grasp the valve, then twist the Sixaxis to turn it. Then let go of L1/R1, set the Sixaxis back and press the two buttons again to re-grasp the valve. Lather, rinse, repeat. Bah.

Things I'm Not Sure About:

- The buddy assist system. Here you can help your allies access areas they couldn't normally reach and vice verse. I only saw it in action once, when my buddy helped haul me up a wall. It might be a big part of the latter parts of the game but it felt sort of tacked on in the demo.

- The green targeting reticle on my rifle? Really? Green? I don't know why this bugs me. But green?

just because the first game was crappy doesn't mean the sequel will necessarily be bad. Im assuming this game is going to be amazing yet we have to wait for the beta or final product to be sure. Take Treyarch's cod3 for example awful game yet they've had 2 years to improve on there previous game and cod5 looks awesome. Trust me Guerrilla have worked hard on this so we wont be let down, im hoping.

I'm looking foward to KZ2 quite a lot, as the first one wasnt any good to be perfectly honest, but I think the sequel will be a very good game.
It seems a lot of the haters are just bandwagon followers, and it appears that they hate it because it isnt on the 360 as well.
you dont see many PS3 fanboys crying over there being no Gears of War or Halo on PS3 do you?

Heck the new gameplay footage kills all of the pre renendered footage by a mile. Each time they show more of this game it gets better and better. Also the latest footage is still a pre alpha build lol. After these new gameplay footage and ppl still have doubts well just don't buy it and just play geow2, but I'll be playing the best fps of 09, KILLZONE 2!!

Despite the trickery they pulled with the original trailer, I have faith that this game will be damn good. I loved the campaign and multiplayer modes on the first game. The story and characters were very interesting (if not a bit foul-mouthed and stereotyped - looking at you, Rico), and it definitely drew you into the action. I wouldn't even look at an FPS as a game choice before I picked up Killzone, and I don't plan on being disappointed when I pick this and my PS3 up later this year.

    Things I Disliked:

    1) There is at least 2 different types of enemies from what I know (light and heavy)
2)You probably use a lot of bullet cause when you shoot the guy he goes into ragdoll and it seems as if he is still alive and you continue to shoot him.

    Things I'm Not Sure About:
1)Im guessing that the buddy system will be big in this game
2)I get your point of why is the reticle is green. Im guessing its cause a good part of the game is at night. They dont want people to have to use night vision , so they put it on the gun.

im just hoping its a really good game regardless of how much or little the graphics differ from the E3 trailer to the final product.. Sony has been pulling this kinda crap since day one. Remember when they said the Ps2 would have graphics comparable to Toy Story? so this is no surprise it falls behind.. I just dont like getting lead around in circles like im stupid by big name companies. Anyways, my point is, Sony needs a great exclusive FPS.. Haze doesnt cut it, sorry.

disk space, if they wanted to have more disk space all they have to do is put the game on multi disk. I don't understand this at all, Sony has alot of games for there ps2 that has multi disk and its okay with everyone, wat is something wrong with having to swap disk, or we all just soo spoiled that everything should be on just one disk, as long as the games are good, and play well isn't that wat games r all about, who cares if the systems reach there limits, and they will, u know why cause they r systems, they can only do soo much. I can tell u all right now as soon as a console hits the market no matter how new it is, its already out dated, because they can't be upgrade. Limited memory, limited graphic card, limited space, always will and always have been limited. U all want true state of the art games with unlimited graphics get a pc, cause unlike consoles they can be updated, wats the point anyways. People r still going to be fans forever i guess.

    lol

gow was boring, really bad story and was way too short imo. okay it looked very gd but hay the game pushed the limits of the 360 THERE IS NOT ENOUGH DISK SPACE TO IMPROVE ON GOW1 EXEPT MAKING IT LONGER.

"they also did the same thing with the motorstorm trailer. and that game blew"

Haha, no it didn't. Motorstorm was the most innovative, fun, best looking, and overall best racing game of last year. You probably should play something before you put it down.

"...a remarkably faithful opening that hearkened back to that trailer..."
i think it could still be a cool game, but i still don't like how sony was hyping their games with high resolution pre-rendered footage. when you compare that e3 footage with the current game stills and gameplay footage, the game doesn't come close in detail or quality of appearance. the polygon count alone is the most noticeable difference. they also did the same thing with the motorstorm trailer. and that game blew. that's why it's a pack-in. you pack-in games that don't sell, but you can still make people feel like they're getting something extra for the same price of a console alone. why aren't they packing in ratchet and clank or uncharted? because people are still paying $60 for those... as few as that may be. i just hope killzone 2 is not a total let down. i really need something to play on my shiny, black dust magnet. but for a war game, i'm putting my money on MGS4.

oh, and i DESPISE the six-axis BS.

But was it any fun, did you get any satisfaction playing it, like did the enemy animation twist and rithe when shot? or did the gun barrel glow red after firing it for a while, any blood gushers, and I really dont care if it looked as good as the 3 year old demo, if it looked awesome played awesome and sounded awesome and was totally a blast to play then I'm in.

To all the stuff about the green thing, it was under "things I'm not sure about." Let it go.

Oh and it's about time a preview actually listed the things in the game that could possibly ruin it. I'm so tired of previews being so upbeat and happy when we all know the game is gonna fail (not saying this one is, but in general).

man.. this preview or whatever is written so poorly. Look at IGN. Almost every news/previews are posted earlier than GS, and written with much more details and in higher quality. go to IGN to read their impression on KZ2. heck, go to IGN to read all things about Sony's pre-E3 showing.

Actually, I think the wheel-turning minigame mechanic sounds like a fun use of the Sixaxis function, even if it's not mind-blowing. Seriously, just use it for little things that don't get in the way of the core game.

I agree with the enemies factor that he's talking about. I remember playing the first killzone and it didn't seem much fun killing the same kind of unit over and over again. I'd say throw in some large mechanical creatures or something. No multi-player information? Online gameplay will be what gives this game its replay value and makes it go above and beyond other FPS. Make it happen!

Alloy1717 is right, on the whole previews starting to lack substance thing.
Like, the ridicule being green really all that annoying? Play a game like GRAW where everything is brown, and see if your happy then.
Though, I like the fact that the guns feel satisfying. In the first game, they felt heavy and sluggish for every single gun.

In light of games like Gears of War that looked amazing and played sub par. I am really waiting to get my hands on this game to test the controls. Graphically the game looks top-notch, and the AI looks versatile and resourceful. The amount of time Gorilla has taken in producing this game places high expectations on the final product. So far, for a game in its pre-alpha stage Killzone2 is shaping up to be a must buy.

Also, the PS3 controller is so bad for first-person-shooters. I wish this game would come out for my other gaming systems because I hate my PS3 and PS2 controllers. This isn't 1994 anymore, make a more ergodynamic design, geeze
