Description

We're always focused on what's next: upcoming games, behind-the-scenes reports from industry events across the world, interviews with game developers, and a few surprises here and there.

Okay, so technically the title of this blog entry should read "Sony Pre-E3 2008: SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Confrontation Impressions" but I'm afraid that, if I typed the full thing out, the Internet would run out of space. So I keep it short for you. Anyway, I'm a self professed former SOCOM fan. I say "former", not because of a lack of quality in recent games, but rather a lack of time for playing them. Indeed, ever since the first SOCOM, I've been a big fan. I have fond memories of spending seemingly endless hours playing the first two SOCOMs--the former of which has the uneasy distinction of being the game that introduced me to the "corpse hump."

With SOCOM Confrontation, the game has made strides, yet still manages to feel iike the SOCOM i destroyed my early 30s with. On the progress front, the game is making fun use of the Sixaxis features on the Dual Shock 3. When you bring your player to rest and set up for a shot, the angle your holding your controller at will determine whether your charater is crouching, standing up straight or peeking left or right. It takes a while to get used to moving the Sixaxis up, down, left, and right, and, more importantly, being mindful of your controller's position at all times but it's surpsingly responsive and useful once you do acclimate to it.

Despite touches like that, this is still SOCOM through and through; with multiplayer maps that give you tons of options for avoiding (or confronting) enemies, and enough cubbyholes and rooftops to please the latent camper in all of us. The Middle Eastern map on-hand at today's event was one of seven that will be included in the final product, with the possibilty of additional DLC maps after the game is released.

As much fun as I had with SOCOM Confrontation, it's hard not to think of the more modern-feeling Call of Duty 4 when playing it. Certainly the bar has been raised in the multiplayer military genre of late and the competition--of which SOCOM Confrontation is included--is going to have to decide what that means for the future of their series.

I love SOCOM. One thing is for sure i am tired of killing ARABS...people need to be more creative.

@ chronic 360 you dont need a credit card to go online bro. I game online and you only need a credit card to buy things from the PS store but im sure you can go to your local ebgames and but it as well. Plus by the time this comes out I am sure they would have released the PS network cards which are like debit cards made for the PS store. I cant buy nothing using my gift certificate on the Ps store i put money on it to buy cod4 and warhawk updates.

Oh, this could be good. At least past Socoms were fun to play, this could be a title the PS3 is in dire need of now that it turns out Haze was a over hyped flop.

I for one am glad to see they put all their time and energy into the multiplayer ! 32 player Socom will rock !! The PS3 needs some more exclusive multiplayer action ! I'm no fanboy of any console, I'm lucky enough to have them all, but sony is earning some of my trust back with most of their shooters having completly customizable controls. I'm very happy about this and If ps3 games keep on doing this they will get more money from me. I will say this also, if it comes down to buying a game that is on the PS3 and the 360 both, and the ps3 version has customizable conrtols and real servers, the ps3 will get my cash. Desode

I don't know, I have mixed emotions about multiplayer only games. I like the concept of getting right into what, about after a month and two to three play through s (depending on the quality of game) I will be playing for the remainder of my time with the game. On the other side of things, I think an important element is left out of the games experience when there is a missing, or sub par campaign mode in a game. It is not simply the fact that the campagin is missing that this element belongs to, but something I can't put my finger on. I think it is emerging myself in an the in depth world of the single player mode, then being able to take it to the streets in multiplayer. Two examples are UT3, and Warhawk. With UT3 the lack of a good campaign ruined the game for me, I thought I finally had a Gears of War type experience on my PS3, and upon viewing the first scene was ready for it but was drastically let down when met with several CTF's and other such things. In Warhawk I expected to see a campaign, and was really let down and left feeling cheated because there was not one. In order for a game to be exclusively multiplayer it must bring it's A+ game...or include a campaign .

Are they suppose to be impressing us with those graphics? I thought I was looking at the game on the PS1. Not very impressed.

I THINK THIS GAME IS GONNA BE THE GAME OF THE YEAR AND I FEEL LIKE THE SINGLE PLAYER MODE IS POINTLESS LET'S WAIST COUNTLESS HOURS TRYING TO UNLOCK ALL THE GOOD ITEMS. IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE AND THE FOOLS THAT ARE AGAINST THE ONLINE ONLY MODE NEED TO TRY THIS: GET SOME FRIENDS AND YOU WILL HAVE MORE FUN PLAYING ONLINE CAUSE NO ONE LIKES PLAYING ONLINE ALONE............

I have to agree with BobRea....... i don't like the SIXAXIS controlling my player's position. When i play i get excited and move around, this will cause problems when i play. I hope you can turn it off. Additionally, I don't feel the SIXAXIS work that well, my controller causes my character to spin in circles (even with a full charge) .

Sounds pretty sick, I'm not sure I'll like the whole thing where SIXAXIS determines your position though.

From Brian's impressions, I believe that this game is definitely going to reach the quality of the previous titles in the series while still adding in new gameplay mechanics. It's great to see that more games are coming out that make good usage of the Sixaxis contolles within the DS3.

ocdog45 this proves nothing, there is a reason why he and countless others have devoted their "early 30's" or 20's or whatever to playing. it is the online game series of which all else are compared to, next to halo series and maybe counter strike. CoD is one of the best online games ive seen ever but it owes its success to games like SOCOM Halo and CS. and if 3rd person is a concern to you, where do you stand on gears, GRAW or Ao2?

This isn't SOCOM 4 its SOCOM Confrontation. It basically is half a game, multiplayer only and I don't think there is anything wrong with that. This will be totally awesome and I cant wait. Also there is lots of obvious spelling and grammar mistakes in this bulletin lol.

The only thing keeping me from pickng up SOCOM when it comes out is the lack of a campaign. Seriously, makeing SOCOM exclusivly multiplayer is just stupid. It's like only putting out half a game.
