Treyarch's multiplatform WWII saga adds Canadian, Polish forces to mix, draws inspiration from classic war films like A Bridge Too Far.
Activision today officially revealed more details on its next chapter of the Call of Duty, which is due this fall on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, as well as the Xbox and PlayStation 2. For PC owners, the outlook is still grim--the game is still only scheduled for release on consoles.
The game will once again take place during World War II, this time focusing on the Normandy Breakout, which allowed Allied forces to recapture Paris and set the stage for the fall of Berlin. Canadian and Polish forces will be represented in the series for the first time, joining British and American troops.
On the technical side, the game is being "built from the ground-up for next-gen consoles" with a new physics engine, meaning COD3 won't simply be a prettier Call of Duty: Big Red One, Treyarch's last Call of Duty game.
As seen in the Call of Duty 3 trailer released during E3, hand-to-hand combat will be a part of the game (watch the new movie to the right to see it in action), as will disarming traps, setting explosives, and "other battlefield situations" that require timely button mashing.
Hiding behind cover won't always be the best thing for soldiers' health. Certain portions of the environment will be destructible, allowing gamers to flush out enemies with a well-placed grenade. Approaching objectives will also be open, as branching mission paths will let players decide the best path to achieve goals.
The multiplayer portion of the game will support up to 24 players, three times more than Call of Duty 2 on the Xbox 360 allows. When running around with guns won't do, players can hop into tanks, jeeps, and motorcycles with those cool WWII-era sidecars. There will also be different classes for soldiers as well as a ranking system. The war between man and artificial intelligence may have to wait--there was no mention of any cooperative mode.
Whereas previous Call of Duty games were clearly influenced by recent war movies, COD3 was inspired by more classic war films, like A Bridge Too Far and The Longest Day, according to USA Today. The development team also chatted extensively to veterans of the war, in an attempt to make the game as realistic as possible, and many of these conversations may be compiled for a collector's edition of the game.
Call of Duty 3 has not yet been rated or priced. For more on the game, including new gameplay footage, head over to GameSpot's previous coverage.
I think it would be cool if they took the battle to the air. they had one of the best air forces in the world.
"This game will be great indeed with polish and canadians troops, but still it feels weird since the british and the americans did most of the work then and suffered the most." Russia had the greatest lost of life. Why would that be weird anyway? Canada contributed just as much as the other countries. Have you heard of the liberation of holland?
Glad theres another COD comin just sad its not on PC :( cus i have no intention on buyin a 360 anytime soon lol. Pretty cool that they are adding in more armies although im not much of a candian army fan still neat how they are getting the war in different countries prespectives.
"You know when the allied forces landed at Normandy, only the army of ONE country met their objective. It was Canada's army. Basically, everyone else failed to do what they were supposed to so stop making fun of Canada. You don't hear about their army because they don't go on the offensive very much these days but they are as well trained as anyone. In Afghanistan, Canadian snipers have been credited by the American military for many awards for their work and hold the record for the furthest sniper killing ever. But I guess other people won't hear about the canadian forces unless they go on a rape or killing spree. " I'm sorry, but when you say that you prove you know nothing. All the Armies accomplished thier main objectives, to establish a front towards germany's borders and crush resistance on their sides. they did it very well. Anyway, I can't wait to pick up a Kar and start to slaughter on Live in this.
I hope they've got some nice Canadian and Polish exclusive guns :) I wanna see what they used since i know nothing of their wepons in WWII... They had better have exclusive weapons. (I'm not Canadian)
COD4 in in modern time from the rumors i heard. I CANT BELIEVE IT ISNT COMING OUT ON PC. this looked awesome. the aspect with the jeeps and vehicals was a downside to the first two. this looks awesome. it better come out on PC AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaa i edited this message for this link PC GAMERS READ THIS http://www.gamespot.com/pages/unions/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id= 24834713&union_id=308
Im not american or canadian, im brazilian and even if US is ruining lots of things here, i guess i thould be very thankful, since they helped A LOT in WWII, i know canadian forces joined the war before us, and that other countries really helped too in that war, incluiding Brazil that if i remember correctly, joined the war after some japanese or(and) german attacks and joined with the british army in Italy...now speaking of the game, im excited for it, i really enjoyed Call of Duty 2 for XBOX 360 and i think the next one can be even better, but this is at Activision and Infinity Ward's hands and i know they will do a great job.
mhder But I guess other people won't hear about the canadian forces unless they go on a rape or killing spree. :D haha, awesome. Yes, Canada was and still is one of the finest fighting forces in the world. Quality of quantity.
Speaking German wouldent really be a problem, I love Germany...Probably the nicest people I have ever met. There also as a whole a much more inteligent country than any other. How about a view of the german side of the war like the do with the English and...Russia??? come on now Russia sucks and all they did to win a battle was throw all of their useless people into fire until they overwelmed whomever. A German point of view would be pretty cool, not so much where you are killing Americans, but English and a bunch of Russians!!! Not all German soldiers were Nazis, and I think this is something that is not realized because media tries to make all of Germany's army "Nazi bastards" the minority were Nazis, the rest were soldiers who were more trained than most from any other country. I just wish every time you kill a German in a game someone wasent shouting "take that you nazi bastard", actually id would be ok if you could do the same as a German, but instead say"take that you wop" or "go brush your teeth british limey" or " youre Russian, that really sucks, goodnight" German POV in the war in a game would make it much better rounded and maybe give the germans some respect, because they are the most technically advanced country when talking about firearms and vehicles, thats why america is tighter with germany than any other european country, cus America and Germany would OWN anyone
In 1939 Canada has a population of 11.3 million and the WW2 resulted in 45,300 deaths. A ratio of 4.0 deaths per 1000 pop The US population was 132 million, with 407,300 deaths + 11,200 civilian deaths. A ratio of 3.2 deaths per 1000 pop I'd say both countries pretty much contributed equally. Of course the US didn't join in till much MUCH later All these comments about what. Canada has an army is just ignorant people who obviously know nothing about history OR current events. As others have stated... Canadian forces are fighting in Afganistan right now. You don't hear as much about the canadian army because we usually go in as peace keepers and to fix things....not to blow stuff up I hate it when I hear this ignorant comments that the US saved everyone from WW2....considering dozens of countries contributed to the effort.. If it wasn't for ALL these countries...we would all be speaking german.
I could care less what armies are going to be feaured in the game.... I'm just glad that its gonna be on 360 again and it looks like its gonna be awesome!
Final, poland will be featured a playabe nation in the game. Poland was sort of screwed over when it was attacked by Germany and Britan didnt come and help right away although there was a mutual protection pact. thats why Poland didnt do much of the major fighting since it was destroyed so quick. Anyway the more nations, the better.
Wow, way to show ignorance. "Canada has an army?" Naw, we just, you know, have an understanding with the states where they don't take us over out of kindness. Seriously though, COD 3 seems like it's going to be awesome.
its nice that u can play as the candians and polish. i imagine the polish levels well revolve around hit and run tactics, since poland was lost to the germans. i just hope COD3 isnt another Big Red One.
Hmmm....hopefully COD 3 will be as interesting as it sounds. However I hope they don't start with the "too many WWII games" syndrome.
This game will be great indeed with polish and canadians troops, but still it feels weird since the british and the americans did most of the work then and suffered the most. i dunno it feels weird, but it will be cool seeing canadian troops in the WWII games. when u think about WWII u think the British, Americans, Russians and Germans. since they were the global powers at the time of the war well u can include japan, but that was fought on the eastern frontier of the world.
You know what would be nice...if they actually put historical facts in the game. Seriously, Canada was involved in the war before the US, but it took them 3 games to acknowledge them?
Kayrod29 Wait, Canada has an army? I did not know this. You know when the allied forces landed at Normandy, only the army of ONE country met their objective. It was Canada's army. I'll rent this first. If Infinity Ward isn't making CoD 3, then i don't know if it will be any good. Treyarch made CoD: Big Red One, which sucked. So i'm really hoping this game wont suck either.
