Call of Duty: Black Ops PC mod tools due in May
Treyarch confirms gamers will be able to create custom content for the desktop edition of popular shooter for free next month.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was a disappointment for a segment of the PC-gaming population in 2008 due to Infinity Ward's omission of mod tools and dedicated multiplayer servers. Treyarch vowed to not make the same move with its follow-up, Black Ops, last year, saying that mod tools would be released for PC gamers "sometime" after the Cold War-era shooter's November 2010 launch.
That "sometime" apparently equated to about six months, as a Twitter update from a member of Treyarch's PC development team said today that mod tools should be out by May. "News: We are shooting for mod tools release in May," the full message reads. The developer posted a subsequent message indicating that the mod tools would be free.
Exactly what gamers will get from the release remains to be seen. At the time of its announcement, a Treyarch representative said, "We do not know yet to what extent you will be able to mod the game. There are some purely technical issues related to engine and internal tool enhancements that do not easily fit the mod tools paradigm."
