Activision executives confirm new first-person installment in series will arrive in latter half of next year; no word on developer.
Today, Activision Blizzard issued a better-than-expected earnings report in which it announced a $51 million quarterly profit. In a conference call with analysts afterward, executives revealed further details on the publisher's future plans.
One detail that was revealed was that the Call of Duty series will once again have a fresh first-person installment late next year. "We will launch a new first-person action title during the back half of 2011," Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said. This sentiment was later echoed by Activision COO Thomas Tippl, who said that "Next year's Call of Duty will be a first-person shooter."
The executives did not name the game or which studio was developing it. A likely suspect is Modern Warfare 3, which court documents identified as being in development at Infinity Ward as of May. That same month, Activision said the studio, which had lost over 35 members following the firing of its founders in March, continued to work on its "next big project."
A second Call of Duty is also in the works from newly formed studio Sledgehammer Games. Though Activision has said this title would take the Call of Duty series into the action adventure genre, a May job listing indicated it would also be a first-person shooter. Activision has not said when the Sledgehammer title will be released, but said it was not the unnamed COD project slated for next year--presumably Modern Warfare 3.
"don't know about you, but I don't want a Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 3. I'm not even going to buy Call of Duty 4: Black Ops." At least get the names right, heres a hint, only one game has CoD4 in the name, its CoD4.
meh i still say Cod should make you pick between 1st and 3rd person shooter. i like 3rd person way more. I suck at 1st peerson lmao
I don't know about you, but I don't want a Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 3. I'm not even going to buy Call of Duty 4: Black Ops.
I wonder if that "holla holla get dolla" loser will ever make a come back. It was funny how retarded he was, even if it was a prank to piss people off.
"All right, I think it's time to get a little worried. There was a nice 2 year break between Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops," lol? no there wasn't. MW2 came out Nov 10th 2009 and black ops nov 9th 2010. not even ONE year later alone 2 lol. good job losing track of time
All right, I think it's time to get a little worried. There was a nice 2 year break between Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops, which are the two biggest COD games out there at this point. But with another one coming out of the gate next year, the franchise might become stale. We all saw what happened with Guitar Hero and the Madden series. While both are still popular, they are less popular than the year before. There are still a lot of people enjoying MW2 at this time, so another game (especially if it's Modern Warfare 3) would be pushing it. People will become annoyed that their game is now obsolete because of a newer, better game. It's annoying to say the least. On the other hands, I predict good sales for the game, because the series itself is still relatively young, and the effects of too many games on the market hasn't affected them...yet. We'll see how this goes for them...either way, there's money in their future. How much, though, is still a mystery.
Unless it's something amazingly amazing that will cause my brain to implode from an overdone of awesome....no thank you. MW2 was the last COD for me.
What's even more surprising is people not only buying every COD game, but other shooters too, even on Live. Am I the only person tired of FPS games? Probably.
I just saw the site become Gamespot.asia. Are you guys from asia? Or the comment section is still for worldwide?
234 billion divided by 60 dollars not including local taxes = 3.9 billion.... the math still seems funny unless all of china purchase black ops Unless we are looking at the next pac-man for atari where more copies are produce then systems... except it more copies then people... O Noes next video game crash is coming caused by COD
Gosh, if they're going to make it different, they should put mini-games with racing, puzzles, stuff like that, all in first person.
yay COD black ops warfare sounds great and all the COD kids will love it. two COD games a year that are exactly the same but with different skins a year is not enough we need 3. im so glad COD is the madden NFL of FPS' but even better because instead of releasing the same game every year they release two.
@deathstream 234 billion? I think you need to brush up on your reading skills. You realize there are less than 7 billion people on the planet. Did every person go out and buy the game 33 times? lol gg
Awesome. Let's just kill the franchise. The faster we pump out games, the quicker it'll die. Of course, people will line up to buy the new one, year after year, until finally they realize they've just wasted sixty dollars on what's essentially the same game they've been buying every year.
That's it Activision, keep milking the cow and soon you'll be like EA and their Madden/FIFA/NBA/NHL games. Oh I forgot you now have Blizzard with you, hmm they know how to milk the cow pretty well too...
I can bet whatever you want that the next CoD is MW3, Activision knows it will be the most profitable decision, even with a half-cut IW studio. Who the hell is going to play an action-adventure anyway?
The new madden... one every year This is sure to kill off the rest of the credibility the FPS genre has.
Well...It is a license rape, but they are putting A-teams on it. I'm not much for FPS, but I'm pretty sure most fans saw that the music genre was going to crack at some point. Perhaps the FPS genre may do the same? It certainly does drain profit that would be more kindly divided into many deserving games. That's what is truly too bad - but if this is what everyone wants to play, far be it for me to stop 'em.
cod has become such a powerhouse brand. as long as the games dont suck i dont see a problem with releasing another.
yeah, they're stupid for releasing a game that makes millions of dollars over and over again. don't they know that's not good for business? stop production, lay off your employess and neglect the millions of fans that buy your games so that the small group of whiny gamers on this forum can stop complaining already.
holy shiiit!!!, i have never seen this much of a license rape in my life, they just released black ops and already talking about a new iteration, disgusting!!!
The thing that scares me it's not another COD, but all of you fighting each other about a game. This is really scary and disappointing.
@killdamn you are right. Not everyone does. With some people it's impossible to please no matter what. People hate on the fact that they bring a game out every year. But there are millions who love it and thats who they cater too. You don't like it don't play it and don't sook about it. Common sense really.
