NCAA Football 10 leads NPD's mostly surprise-free top 20 sales chart; Just Dance, New Super Mario Bros. DS continue sales run.
Yesterday, the NPD Group reported all-but-flat US game industry retail sales for July, as total revenue slipped just 1 percent to $846.5 million during the summer doldrums month. However, a closer look reveals a disproportionate weakness in game software sales, which were down 8 percent compared to last year, bringing in just $403.3 million during the month.
Today, NPD has released a more comprehensive look at July's mostly apathetic sales, offering a positional breakdown for the bottom 10 slots of the top 20 software chart during the month. And while the top 10 was largely populated by new releases, the back half of NPD's chart proved to be replete with catalog releases.
Namely, Ubisoft's evergreen title Just Dance turned in another solid performance, just failing to crack the top 10 eight months after its release. Red Dead Redemption on the PlayStation 3 fell the farthest during the month, slipping from third to 14th. One other June top 10 finisher, Toy Story 3 on the DS, also slipped to the back half of the chart in July, falling to 13th.
While all major July releases made an appearance on NPD's chart, a number of June's top titles remained MIA. Again absent from the top 20 were Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, Green Day: Rock Band, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. July also saw THQ's struggling UFC Undisputed 2010 put down for the count.

@monson21502 Well, look at the PS3 and Xbox. Not much different. In fact, It's about even for all consoles up there.
i really dont like this new way NPD releases the charts it sucks it denies us our right to totally rip on the trailing console, we want to see all the sale figures for the top ten
mario kart still selling after five years WOW. This is a message for children ages 8-12.mw2 is not for u so stop buying it NOOBS
One of the things I'm seeing is that there is no longer a dominance of certain software. Anyone remembers when sales of games were like 600k on the chart. IMO, its just more competition of software and we'll see more this holiday.
@daabulls23, that proves the ds has very few good games to choose from. same with the same old wii games that stays in the top ten for so long. the user base is so high and they dont have anything else to buy.
I wonder if Red Dead's multiplayer has effected it's continued dominance. For me it was another case of it sounded real nice on paper but certain design flaws made it not fun to play. If Rockstar had designed the game so that when you are online the freeroam mode made everyone invincible it would have been better. There is nothing worse than playing a game and just trying to advance and people bully you just for not wanting to join their crappy gang.....
New Super Mario Bros. for the DS is still on the chart? Goddamn! Such a fun game, even better that I can take it on the go. :)
So Split/Second/Blur never charated. ModNation Racers charted once. Peace Walker never charted. Am I missing any other major games?! Hopefully all these games are chugging along delightfully. Modern Warfare 2 is still selling. I wonder if it will drop off before Black Ops?!
Playing Xbox One games on somebody else's console will also require a check-in every hour. Full Story
