Diablo III closed beta begins
Blizzard Entertainment confirms beta under way for action role-playing game sequel; more invitations to be rolled out over course of beta.
In keeping with Blizzard Entertainment's traditionally noncommittal approach to release dates, Diablo III will be released when the developer decides it's done. However, the studio is making progress toward that end, as today it announced the launch of the Diablo III closed beta test.
Those fortunate enough to score an invite to the beta will be given access to the game's first act and all five hero classes. Players will take their avatars up against the Skeleton King and his forces, either alone or with each other's assistance. The beta test will also include key characters from the game and a look at the game's character development in the form of skill and crafting systems.
The beta only comes in English, but the final version of Diablo III will launch in multiple languages. Exactly which languages those are won't be revealed until a later date. Players can sign up for a possible invite to the beta test at Blizzard's Battle.net website. The first wave of invitations is being sent out now, but Blizzard has said it will expand the number of included testers in the future.
Diablo III is the first title in the series since 2001's Diablo II: Lord of Destruction expansion and will add a variety of new features, character classes, and a new auction house system designed as "a new way for the company to pull revenues from the game."

@Soviet330 Coming from a guy named "soviet" that is laughable.
Guess it torchlight 2 for me, never a fan of being force to do anything.
If you never played diablo 2 online you never really played the game. half the magic that was diablo 2 was online play.
I actually have never played a Diablo game online. Why start now!? 1 less copy of D3 sold. What does it matter I'm only 1 customer.
My dungeons and dragons adventure shall continue...
Waited for 10 years for it. So going to wait till it is in the bargain bins. Whats another year or so?
:( i want to play this so baaaad
@bad_fur_day Exactly. That nonsense about booting from my game if I'm not online aka the internet shuts out, is completely absurd. I've never played a Diablo game but I was getting excited for this one
Forcing online is going to mean I can't play your game Blizzard. Which is unfortunate, but this definately isn't the only game out there to play.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't have any issues with what they are doing to the game but I'm going to reserve judgement until I play it.I like most of Blizzards games so we will see.
Checking battle.net for key is gonna be torture...
I am kind of excited about the game and know it will probably be decent but knowing how Activision/Blizzard is all about money over anything else now makes me not care quite so much for this release. I think the way WoW is run and how it influenced the art direction in this gaime in addition to some of the money grabs like the auction house sort of ruined the Blizzard mystique for me. Activision's influence is very evident in any of Blizzard's latest games. I wish that merger would have never taken place.
@h3rb As per your example if I were to purchase that same movie at a store...take the physical copy of that movie home with me, how would that not be ownership? When you go the the movies your purchasing the privilege to sit in the theatre and watch a movie, not take it home with you. Is that what your saying we are paying for...We're essentially renting the game? I'm not asking for the online experience offline, I'm not wanting to use the AH offline, talk to friends offline, send mail, trade items etc. I'm asking for the same options we have with D2 and recently Borderlands, the ability to choose.
Beta Yes! Auction House No!
Well its about time :)
Ah, pulling revenues from the game. Sounds like a work of art.
this game will obviously be ridicolously good. but just like starcraft 2, it won't probably make me addicted to it like i was starcraft and diablo 2. torchlight however, seems to be addictive...
For some reason I don't have any expectations for this game, at the same time as I know it will be a great game, which is just good 'cause I'll obviously get more than I expect :P
@TonnFool23 America -is- the whole world.
Is this beta only for americans or for whole world?
@seifer24 Uhh yeah. They already know it'll work on your computer. They need to know if it will work on lower end stuff.
Need more Dungeon Crawl.... *foams at mouth*
"Some gamers are already getting their first cracks at Diablo III." [Offended] Why because it's on PC?!
I have one of the most powerful pcs for gaming 980x 12gigs of ram 580 sli and still blizzard dont care to sent me a ***** invite.Curse them.

Just as an FYI to anyone who is disappointed about not being invited... they said they will invite more people over the course of the beta if they need to, which I assume they will.
diablo code is written by one guy with one arm
No invite yet, here's hoping
@cmacinnis check the official diablo 3 website. info is there.
nice! good news for me. another step closer to release :)
Love how there's not even a hint at how to score an invite...
@PrplMnkyDshwsr7 PC software is almost never "owned". It's licensed. You don't own Windows either. The entitlement idea that people seem to have with playing an online game offline just makes me chuckle. You pay $40 bucks to take your family to the movies, right? You don't get to take anything home there, save for maybe a tummy ache? Why do you feel entitled to bring home the online gaming experience that you pay for? It's media, plain and simple.
Ah, so if it's in the closed beta phase of development, then we can expect a release sometime in 2017.
Only Blizzard takes a decade to release a game that was outdated a decade ago!

@servb0ts and its ppl like you that would complain about games being rushed out and feeling broken let Blizzard do there thing, in the end we always get high quality games from them
In this day and age we should've been up to Diabolo VI or VII. These developers take there time like a grandpa.
Sweet, just opted in, but I probably won't get invited. But it doesn't hurt to try!
and of course i didn't get in yet...... i er "bought" my way into the catacyslm beta but it really isnt worth it for me for Diablo 3 BUT im still curious to take a crack at it :-p so who knows!
Want to play diablo3 now plz.
i miss the good ol days when you could just buy a beta key on ebay. ;(
Hopefully they've put an end to the spam bots and changed the chat to a windowed feature
@187umKILLAH dont forget that warden who used inmates to farm for loot
didnt get in WHAT THE MOTHER HECKIDY POOP POOP
The biggest issue that becomes of having to log onto Blizz servers to play D3 is how much of game is stored on your local machine? With WoW, you are basically calling you're character who's everything is stored there. The only things on the local machine are user settings. Will this be the case with D3, thus we don't even "own" our characters. This is the difference I see between Diablo and starcraft, is there an inventory for your characters in SC? By logging into Blizz servers you will have to likely submit your local game copy to checks versus Blizz's version...bye bye modding. The AH doesn't bother me, if it does...we don't have to use it. I'm in favor of DRM to the extent that it doesn't take ownership of the game away from the consumer who has paid for it. Being forced to play the game online annoys me, plenty of "what if" scenario's out there but shouldn't be an issue in the first place. As with all Blizz games I will be sure to read the EULA very carefully.
I guess I didn't get invited to the party. Booo.
Diablo 1 and 2 are on my favorite games of all time list pretty high up there. I hope it can live up to the hype. I am just worried about the graphics it just does not look like a diablo game as much as a warcraft game with heroes instead.
People people people, your logging into gamespot already to complain about it..Whats the difference if you log into a game??There is none..Ive got to do this already with many games..Including believe it or not tropica 4 its the way gaming is going..If you dont want this go play a xbox even that you have to sign into a account..Its not that id like this in all my games but its the times..Some thing this trivial is not going to stop me from playing diablo 3..If it stops you than thats your choice..Doesnt mean millions of users have not already done this with starcraft 2..So it just is no big deal for me and it should be for you..Man an the auction house get over it dont use it..Move on..
Having real money involved just means rich people have an immediate advantage & can simply buy their way to the best gear which in turn encourages those damn pesky asian farmers that are the plague of modern mmorpg's. An auction house is a great idea but a real money one too? Even WoW doesn't have that and look how badly infested that game is with farmers and gold spammers!
BEST GAME EVR. Actually, **** that game I didn't get an invite.
