Blizzard CEO confirms the developer is trying to get anticipated action RPG on shelves this year, expects expansions to follow retail release.
While Activision has been up front with investors about the possibility of 2011 ending without a single release from Blizzard, the Diablo III developer is still holding out hope to celebrate at least one launch this year.
Speaking in an Activision post-earnings conference call today, Blizzard's Mike Morhaime said the company is working hard to get the game on store shelves by the end of this year. However, he also noted that it was still too early to commit to that release window, and Activision's own guidance for the year specifically noted that it did not include any Blizzard releases.
"There are a lot of moving parts in putting out a complex release like Diablo III," Morhaime said, noting that the recently announced real-money auction house hasn't been tested in beta yet. That beta is expected to begin by the end of September.
Morhaime also talked about the Diablo III business model. While the auction house will provide a new way for the company to pull revenues from the game, Morhaime said he expects Diablo III to follow a traditional boxed retail product model, with a primary product on shelves and subsequent expansions offered for sale.

And on another subject. The delays are not due to the game being better. It's just a matter of marketing. When the game is out is very important to these companies. They don't care if it is out with bugs because they will patch it but they only care for it to be out at the right time to get more money. The new starcraft did not have anything great as in new. This one seems better but at the same time in the same level. No big improvement (except for graphics/effects). They must do something better.
Like latest Starcraft I will not be playing this game after being a fan of Diablo 2. The reasons are that blizzard is always restraining gameplay/game experiances like LAN which is a lot of fun with friends and implementing easy choices to control cheating (always online) instead of implementing better safetyguards. The cost is always game experiance, I am not willing to sacrifice that, I don't want to ever see a ping of 150ms (with lag spikes because of ISP) in any game that I want to play in a LAN. 15ms max in LAN games because that is the fun of it. So, Blizzard, I will be playing other games that fit my needs, you are not the only game developer out there.
Many people like to think that the longer a game is delayed, the longer amount of time they need to kill. I like to think of it as the longer the delay, the better it'll be.
Well, i have no words to discribe how bad i want the game, please blizzard make it quick at least release the beta so we get a little light of hope hahaha. BTW awesome video.
release the beta!!... :\ ... just look closely............................... stay awhile and listen, the voice acting... Demon Hunter for me!... day one buy online, offline with or without RMAH!
I want Diablo 3 comes out this years 2011 Don't dissapoint again like Diablo 2 Please making quickly to released...Hell Yeah
The auction stuff is really to early to make a call on, it very well could ruin the game, only after release will this be known. If to many feel they have to spend real cash to play the game at whatever level it will certainly ruin it for many, like DLC the answer may never really be known because they can not calculate how many product sales they lose to balance against gains in DLC or something like this. Almost no games anymore have decent co-op models that can played on a lan anymore, which is what I was hoping for in D3 and always online thing ruined it for me. SC 2 is so slow booting and connecting even with cable internet and a beefy pc at times that it just collects dust, so D3 which was highly anticipated is a no longer a product our home will be purchasing which only costs blizzard 3 sales, insignificant, however I do have to wonder how many sales like this blizzard will lose with these decisions as opposed to how many new sales they will get because of them, to me, it seems they are actually risking the lose of profits at least in the short run. In the end I am not one of these people who will sit on a high horse claiming that if I had an opportunity to make more money from my work I would not, so I will not call blizzard greedy like so many others garnering images of a fat white man with a cigar behind a desk somewhere, it is their product, and DUH profit is what they are creating it for, however in this case I will be chosing not to purchase it.
I tried playing multiplayer on Blizzard server.. my connection was crappy, although I can play offline on Starcraft 2, it made me think that my money was not been wasted. Now, Diablo 3, no offline mode for single player?.. I don' t know if I'm excited because they're releasing it this year or not because of there is no offline mode... sigh...
Wow one article about D and it's the top game for like a week. Shows the fanbase is still running strong.
From since I can remember, Diablo ranked 9.6 on Gamespot in 1996 and hardly any game came close to that for a few years. D3's got some pretty big shoes to fill!
The sanctity of the place is fouled.... I mean really fouled, its been like 10 years and no one's been through here. Seriously somebody get some febreeze or something this is redunkuculous.
They should have ported D2 to consoles half a decade ago...Heck you can still find D2 on store shelves.
Real money auction is the best way to make safe a thing that some players would do either away, make it more available for players that wouldn't pay for items (enlarging the market) and maybe even enabling some hardcore gamers to hearn a little cash, so I tottaly welcome this idea. Also, with the level of piracy and probalility of cheating, i think that there is no other way but to keep your char stats on their server. We are past dial-up age and we all have unlimited data transfer for a fix payable ammount per month, just don't be the exception. And Blizard is not dead, it still makes tons of money off of WOW, don't worry :). I jut hope they realeas this game already
If Diablo doesn't make it this year Blizzard is dead. What ever happend to the SC2 Exp? Yes, it takes them decades to do an expansion. Maybe another generation will buy it? By the way, what pretty graphics and cheap games they have! They are WORST than Nintendo making games.
everyone who complains about the persistent online, do something about it and don't buy the game. Everyone complained about the lack of LAN in Star Craft II, but over a million people got the game. Blizzard doesn't care about your opinion unless it hits them in the wallet.
I really like the idea of auction house - for the first time ever after hours and hours of fun play (I hope) I could sell some unique items that I don't need and get back real money that I spent on the game itself. Nice and easy using game UI not some shady unofficial website. I think it's cool ==> D3: free to play (if you got lucky).
it would be about danged time if they released it this year seriously i think the games just overhyped and overpriced!
Dang it Activision! Don't you have the decency to wait until next year? I mean, some of the stuff in Diablo 3 hasn't even passed beta yet. Come on, you make billions out of WoW!
Guys chill out about the auction house ruining the game. It's not like they are going to force you to use it. That doesn't mean i don't think blizzard has gotten greedy or anything i just think as long as the game is awesome and there isnt a subsciption fee im fine. I do despise the fact that there is no offline singleplayer that is just stupid.
i dont want them to rush it, i want them to make it perfect... hopefully it will work on my old ass computer
I apploud for their own real money item trading system. I have wished they could bring it to WoW eariler. There will always be ppl trading items with real $$ no matter what. This way, they provide a safe way for doing so, much better than risking your hard earn $$ with unknown sites !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD JOB BLIZZARD !!!!!!!!!!!
WARGIRL1 WHAT TAKEN SO LONG? its been year in the waiting! --------------------------------------- Lol...It's been 3 years actually since announcement.
No. Just...no. I've wanted this game for so long, but after all the crap they've announced... *re-installs Diablo 2*
With all due respect, I don't think it should have taken this long. There is nothing revolutionary about Diablo. It's like starcraft...built on an old formula and really really refined. Yes I like that Blizzard has a commitment to quality but I can't help but remember when Black and White 2 was coming out, Peter Moly was going on and on about how realistic the physics were, like super dupe realistic, and they were, but the game overall lost features from the first and felt like the studio picked the wrong things to focus on. I'm not impaqtient, but I can't figure out why it would take this long to build what is essentially a really nicely upgraded version of D2, with a diff skill system.
@megakick If you ever really got serious about playing D2, you would realize the real money auction house is exactly the same thing as d2jsp. However with Blizzard in charge of the 3rd party, it won't be as shady and insecure as jsp. It's also entirely optional.
I think this release 'rumor' is just to keep things hot for D3. Marketing wise, you think its wise to release this D3 while Elder Scroll V is running wild?
Too bad earning billions every month from WoW isn't enough for blizzard. But too bad game reviewing websites will so much overrate it. Ignoring the negative points such as sucking money from us by these lame ideas.
Geez...when game companies decide to skim off the top, it's time to stop buying their games. I can see it now: "5% buyer's premium for all items sold on Diablo 3 auction house. Blizzard makes more money off of auction house than actual sales of games from second year onwards." I thought that D3 looked a lot like the newer version of Gauntlet. I was wrong...it looks a lot more like the original quarter-eater. :(
when DLC isnt enough...AH for real money! yea i was looking forward to diablo as i loved the 1st 2 but this is just awful and wrong. ill pass on this and most everything else from a company that puts out a game every other year
might as well say Diablo 4 slated for 2025...cause that's how much D3 matters right now...too little, too late....thanks for waiting.
