Juvenile mascot's retro platformer joined on the Wii by Columns, Ristar, and Victory Run.
Nintendo has pledged to provide new Virtual Console games every Monday, and today's batch includes a quartet of selections from the Sega Genesis, the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the TurboGrafx-16.
Nintendo had the NES version of Donkey Kong available to download on the day the Wii launched, and now it has reunited ape father and son: Donkey Kong Jr. has arrived on the Virtual Console. Originally released on the system in 1986, the game features the offspring of the original Kong attempting to free his father from the clutches of fellow Nintendo mascot Mario. Donkey Kong Jr. is available for 500 Wii points ($5).
Representing the Sega camp is a pair of games virtually bookending the Genesis' life span. From the early days of "blast processing," there's 1990's gem-addled puzzle game Columns, while 1995's platformer Ristar was released in the console's latter days, when Sega was splitting its attention along a swollen product line that included the Genesis, the Sega CD, the 32X, the Game Gear, and the Saturn. Columns and Ristar both sell for 800 Wii points ($8).
Finally, Hudson Entertainment has another TurboGrafx-16 game on tap in the racing game Victory Run. Challenging players to complete a marathon taking place over the course of multiple days, Victory Run lets players perform maintenance on their cars to keep parts from wearing out over the course of the race. Victory Run is available for 600 Wii points ($6).
I picked up Victory Run, and although I like retro games, especially racers, this one REALLY shows its age. Sound's pretty awful, to the point of annoying. It's fun for 500 points, but I wouldn't recommend getting it unless you're a fan. The Bomberman 93 they released is good fun. I just wish hey'd do Herzog Zwei.
I actually remember Victory Run. One of the launch games for the TurboGrafix 16. I had the system and 34 games. It was so-so at best even back in 1989. Nintendo and Sega systems crushed N.E.C. I also had Genesis and SuperNintendo with 29 and 41 games. I sold them as time went on for the "Next Big VideogameSystem" All of these had great and crap ass games. The TG 16 had some games I wouldn't mind playing again. Nintendo Wii Virtual console is an great way to rebuild a once mighty game collection. Victory run was $69.00 back in 1989. So 6 bucks now..
Some people here don't seem to understand the difference between something being "lame" and never playing it before. Just because a lot of these games didn't have the marketing of Mario, Metroid, or Zelda doesn't mean they suck. Search gamespot or gamefaqs and see if you might like the game before calling it lame. I for one owned a TG-16 and think a lot of these games are pretty good. Although I would like to see Legendary Axe, Dragons Curse (wonderboy 3), Splatterhouse, Dragon Spirit, Dracula X (castlevania in the states), or Cadash make appearances on the system.
virtual console is by far the best and will be even better as N releases more games (hopefully more companies will follow with the old NES games when they see this makes $$$). too bad they are priced a little high thouhg :(
Try buying those games from 2nd hand/specialty stores. Youll be surprised how high the prices go. You guys should be glad you arent paying 30 bucks for DK jr.
I am with axillia. Because of the overwhelming force of the NES, most people didn't play the Master System. I'd love to play Phantasy Zone and Phantasy Star 1. As for the Genesis games, most are available in Sega Genesis Collection. Unless it is not easily available in other forms, I'll pass.
It's great to see all this love for some of the best games ever made. It would be really cool to see NEC, Ninetendo and Sega reach even farther back into their catelogs and offer up Master System, Game Gear, Sega CD, Sega 32X, T-16 CD Rom, Supergraphix, Gameboy (B&W) Game Boy Color games on the Wii.
What they can't come up with any new games so they have to back track all the way back to Donkey Kong??
Aaah, more retro gaming goodness. I can't wait to play some of the classics that I missed the first go-'round years ago... And for those of you clamoring for this game or that game, keep your pants on. The service just started, and I'm sure there's a lot of work involved in (a) securing a license for some older third-party titles and (b) doing the work of making them operate in the virtual console. It will get better, I'm sure.
Come on, Nintendo! Release some of the really good stuff. I don't give a damn about the NES version of Donkey Kong Jr.!
maverickexe "kenesu96 ebonyflame actually according to DK canon the DK in DK64 etc IS DKJR and diddny being his kid!" Uh... I don't think Diddy is Donkey Kong's (DKjr.) kid in the DKC series and DK64 games, he's his friend... Think about it, diddy's not even the same species as DK... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Or, it could be proof of evolution. Diddy is the missing link!
sega needs better games like golden axe (all of them) and the other sonic games oh and dont forget streets of rage 1-3
kavadias1981: They can't release everything now, they have to develop new documentation and do full compatibility testing for every game. I agree it's too expensive though. I'm not paying a fiver for a game that's been on PC emulation free for 10 years!
Why on earth don't they just release every game (that they legally can) right now??? And why are they charging so much? I could buy Sonic Mega Collection Plus for PS2 for 10 pounds and they charge 800 points just for Sonic 1?! Shout to show your protest! LOWER VC PRICES, LOWER VC PRICES, LOWER VC PRICES, LOWER VC PRICES, LOWER VC PRICES, LOWER VC PRICES, LOWER VC PRICES!
They need to get get Star Tropics 1 & 2 on there, and also have a new Star Tropics for the Wii. Yeah that should be the next series to milk, that or Kid Icarus...
I got so excited for the VC and so far its been nothing but disapointment. WTF is this garbage and why is Nintendo scraping the bottom of the barrel.
EvanO_O WTF is this crap? Just give gamers Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger. Jesus Christ Nintendo. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- word

All of these different game mentioning, and none for the Tecmo football series? I would love to see any of the Tecmo football games on the NES or SNES. Wouldn't mind seeing River City Ransom, TMNT, or any of the NES Super Mario series either.
I hope they would consider releasing Seiken Densetsu 3 (with proper English translation) for Wii Virtual Console. IMO, it's the best in its series.
wii points are a rip You only get 1000 points for 10.00 and thats enough for one 800 point game(most). I have downloaded golden axe,sonic,mario64 30.00 for 3 games. I like how they say 8.00 or 6.00,but why can't you just pay 8 or 6.00? when you have to pay 10.00 or 20.00? sorry to rant here but this is how I feel.
A lot of you sound really excited about the VC, but you know, with the Wii points being as expensive as they are, it doesn't cost much more to just buy an old Genesis or NES or SNES, and you would immediately have a much bigger selection of games that you actually like. I know some older games like SuperMarioRPG might cost $30 on eBay, but that's a bargain when compared to the price of an Average Wii game.
Awesome... Now i can have it on my Wii and also on my NES! DK jr. was always an awesome game for oldskool gamers like me:lol:
Great! I am mostly interested in the games I missed out on. I never had Ristar or a TurboGrafx-16 so I'm a happy with these latest releases :)
I like the whole Live Arcade / Virtual Console / whatever-Sony-are-calling-their-version. Some of the games are a little expensive but hey, you don't HAVE to buy them. I'm sure the Virtual Console will get around to all our favourites eventually. I want to see more N64 games! By the way puppiemaster - the 60GB PS3 is going to cost the equivalent of about $850 in the UK. It's still too expensive, but not as bad as $1100.
interisting..... but there is only ONE Game I'm highly anticipation is the Turbographic 16 CDRom Japanese version of Dracula X. That would clearly be the ultimate hidden gem of a game incredibly difficult to find and would help encourage a download service like this.
These first generation games are WAY WAY overpriced considering they came free with Animal Crossing. This kind of kills my hopes for the sequel having any sort of emulation.
Why can't they put up great games like SNES Zelda, Super Mario Bros. 3, Yoshi's Island, Tetris, Castlevania, Mega Man (any).
Wii need Earthbound, FF III (VI), Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Zelda: A Link to the Past/Ocarina of Time, Castlevania (all of the Nintendo ones), Battletoads, Gunstar Heroes........ You add to the list, mine's too long :D
