Doom 3 BFG Edition headed for 360, PS3, PC
Bethesda bringing back id Software shooter this fall with original game, Resurrection of Evil add-on, seven new levels, 3DTV support, and first two Doom games in one package.
While diehard Doom fans await a fourth installment, Bethesda Softworks is giving gamers a refresher course in the seminal first-person shooter series this fall with the Doom 3 BFG Edition.
Set for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, the BFG Edition will include 2004's Doom 3, the following year's expansion pack Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, and a new seven-level single-player campaign titled "The Lost Mission." If that's not enough Doom, the package also includes playable versions of the original Doom and Doom II. In addition, Bethesda says the game will feature enhanced visuals, 5.1 surround sound, stereoscopic 3D support, and head-mounted displays.
The changes being made to Doom 3 for the BFG Edition are going beyond cosmetic and into the realm of gameplay. For example, the original Doom 3 featured a flashlight to help players navigate the dark levels, but it couldn't be used at the same time as a weapon. In the BFG Edition, the flashlight will be "armor-mounted," so players won't have to sacrifice firepower in order to get a good look at their surroundings. In addition, the game will feature a new checkpoint save system "allowing for smoother progression through the game."
