Oscar-nominated actors will lend voices to game tie-in for Marvel's superheroic blockbuster, launching for consoles, handhelds, PC on May 2.
Way back in 2006, Sega and Marvel Entertainment revealed that they were collaborating on a tie-in for the forthcoming film Iron Man, based on one of the latter's comics. Besides giving the game plenty of development time, Sega has announced it is taking another step to make sure the multiplatform game doesn't join the notoriously large pile of critically pilloried superhero-movie-based games.
Today, the Japanese publisher announced it has enlisted the likenesses and vocal talents of Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. (Chaplin, Zodiac, the forthcoming Tropic Thunder). It will be the first game role for the Oscar-nominated actor, who plays Tony Stark, the alcoholic genius inventor who moonlights as the titular superhero. Also on board is fellow former Best Actor nominee Terence Howard (Hustle and Flow, Crash), who is slated to voice Stark's confidant, air force pilot Lt. Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes.
Currently, Iron Man is slated for a simultaneous May 2 release alongside the film. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game are being developed by Secret Level (Golden Axe: Beast Wars), with Artificial Mind working on the PlayStation 2, PC, Wii, and PlayStation Portable versions of the T for Teen-rated game. From the demo, I can tell that this will be different than any other movie tie-in. It's great paced action with easy controls and tons of weapons. The AI is actually pretty stupid since I noticed that none of the enemies were running away screaming. lol A few of the soldiers did say "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING!?!?!??!?!," but for the most part, they just tried to shoot at me. Even on formidable difficulty, it's really easy. This game won't suffer from poor gameplay, controls, story, graphics, or framerate. It might suffer from low difficulty, but now that I think about it, you play Iron Man. WTF!! Who can actually beat Iron Man? I mean really. It's gonna be a slaughter-fest for everything except the bosses and super mega flying uber mechs or something... Anyway, it's going to be awesome, but it will be completely overshadowed by GTA IV.
Looking forward to the flick. I'll try the game out too, I've been an IronMan fan for years. Unfortunately when JoeQ took over at Marvel I had to give it up, that guy is just retarded (shame too, because his artwork is great).
i remember being excited for a lot of movie games but ALL of them were horrible, except for spiderman maybe...
actually Gameboy2k , i thought the x-men legends games were pretty badass. i mean, i understand your argument against the multitude of characters, but they were good games. I guess they weren't TRUE movie-game adaptations (although the movie tie- ins, like X3, pretty much sucked), they were released in the same time frame as the movies and they were pretty much designed to take advantadge of the popularity of the movies. but i agree with you, as long as they aren't trying to make the game follow the exact story of the movie (about a 2 hour trip), it could potentially be very good
Strangely this game seems to get more and more odd. Its been in development for just under 2 years, one of the Sega producers is a comic book fan (See interview one) and its taking an open world approach unlike the last dozen or so games. And it doesn't look like a quick cash in to a film. What worry's me about this though is the fact they have 2 company's working on 2 different releases so somethings bound to go wrong there. And it doesn't look like Iron Man will need to use much apart from his blaster. Still looks to be better than 95% of Film to game ideas so its worth keeping an eye on.
Anybody notice that whenever the company says that they're taking extra measure to make sure the movie game doesn't suck, it's still mediocre at best? if they'd just make a game with the characters and not even worry about the movies then they'd probably work out better because really, the biggest problem is that these developers have to work within the confines of a movie script with little room to add any of their own ideas in.
When they try to release games on all platforms like this and tie it in to a movie, it all ends up being okay at best on only one or two of the systems it was released on. Iron Man looks to be a good movie. I'm not sure that the game is going to hold up. Movie studios need to start putting up the money for more focused developers and target either now-gen consoles or back-then consoles - not both. Having two developers helps, but if they are trying to make a similar game across all platforms, you can bet there are going to be problems with every version. Sad to say, but is typical - no matter how much the PR people try to talk it all up.
The movie is shaping up real well, i wish the same could be said for the game though. From what I've seen, the gameplay looks like it'll get old real fast.
I've read the posts about "movie to game translations" and how it's possible "IRONMAN" might be bad. But, this is a cool game idea. Think about it? Ironman could be a videogame idea, even if it was not a comic book and/or movie first. If you look at : (1)Harry Potter.... that is a book and a movie, NOT a game. (2)Spiderman.... again.... a comic book, a decent movie, but those moves he performs are hard to mimic. Camera Angles will always be your worst enemy. (3)Xmen.... a hot comic book, a decent movie, but the character universe is too big. People will complain about their favorite character not being included, and the fighting styles of the characters are not clearly defined.(example, Wolverine is purely hack and slash, not some power slash light display). However, Ironman can be a video game, because all the suit's powers listed within the comic book are clearly defined. Thus, Ironman can be developed into a successful game. I'm going to think positive on this one. Again... think about it.... Iron man.... you can control him. Cool as HE(Double Hockey sticks) (steppin off my soapbox)
Instead of buying this movie / game tie in, why don't you give me half the money you were going to spend on it, I'll kick you in the nuts, and we'll call it a day.
Superman Returns -horrible Batman Begins- bad X-men (the movie game) - crap Spiderman 3 - horrible Transformers - junk Harry Potter - crap, and the list goes on. Regardless of my enjoyment of Ironman the movie, which I will see in theatres, forgive me if I don't go waste $60 on the game.
@GrayHalo: Tony Stark's always had a big drinking problem. Alcoholism is a big part of his character and story.
The movie looks like it will be alright but I'm still a bit reserved. The game also looks really cool, I just hope it is fleshed out. Only time will tell.
I thought they were gonna say Ron Howard would narrate. "And now the story of an alcoholic superhero who was gravely injured and had no choice but to build a powerful suit of armor to keep himself together."
I was going to at least rent this when it came out. I'm a pretty big fan of Iron Man, so I'm an easy sell for the movie and game.
Wasn't the movie bumped up to April 30th? So are the games coming out then or will they still be released May 2nd?
Im guessing, as most superhero games go - it will be free roaming, but sega are probably concentrating on this being actually good to play. Ive seen some videos where you can dodge missiles, redirect them towards the enemy... Looks pretty good. But it will probably be a game where you break out of the prison in your first armour, and then you hae a series of "checkpoints" to reach, such as a bunch of tanks to destroy, and then eventually you can take to the skies and reach checkpoints there. Methinks there will be a radar map indicator involved. If this is true, then the gameplay better be spot on!! Free roaming superhero games never work out right, its like - you want to be able to do MORE in this free roaming world except just free-roam. The batman begins game was an exception, but it was still pretty bad. Mostly, superhero/movie games just use gameplay elements from loads of other games. Neither of them make them their own - however, alot of games are based on the superheroes themselves!! go figure! Basically, all you need to do with ironman is NOT make a human/mech game where you just fly about and destroy targets. Even though that is fun, you can do that anytime = this is the time to use a liscence, use the source material and make it just as enjoyable to play as the movie looks enjoyable to watch. Well, those are my two cents. And if sega can do it, anyone can!! lol. Sorry sega, but I just can't get passed Sonic next-gen :(
Hmmm, does anybody else see a possible problem with releasing a movie tie in game a few days after GTA drops?
hopefully they change the developer or dev team for The Dark Knight because Batman Begins sucked major butt
Call me shallow or whatever you want, but that is big news for me. I really like Downey and having his voice talent in the game is just great news for me. This is just another reason for me to buy this.
I really hope this is going to be a good game. We really need a quality super hero game in this day and age.
i liked the spiderman 1 and 2 games for the ps2 and GC. but i bought superman returns and i seriously i wanted to kill myself after 20 minutes. i really hope the curse gets broken with this game.
This is going to be nice. But when are they going to freakin' announce the Video game adaptation of The Dark Knight!?
