Nintendo's handheld is now the best-selling console in Britain for 2006, with more than 2 million units sold.
Figures released by the UK game-research outlet Chart-Track show that the Nintendo DS is now the 2006 gaming hardware market leader--beating the PlayStation 2, the PlayStation Portable, and even the Xbox 360. A total of 2 million gamers across the country now have a DS system, the figures show.
The company attributes the success of the product to the successful launch of the DS Lite in June, as well as the popularity of the Touch! Generation games such as Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? (called Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day in the US).
It seems to be only good news for Nintendo over the last few days. It recently announced that 600,000 Wii units had been sold since launch in the US, and preorders of the console on Amazon UK sold out in minutes. The British launch for the Wii is December 8, and many stores are planning special midnight launch events.
Nintendo UK general manager David Yarnton said, "The ability of Nintendo DS to appeal to both gamers and nongamers alike through an exciting, fun, and innovative portfolio of software has been instrumental in its success in the UK."
"Microsoft make $75 per each 360 sold now" It's gonna take alot of 75 dollars profits and an aboslutely insane amount of software sales to make them back the millions upon millions of dollars they've lost on the Xbox / 360. And they're not gonna start profiting any time soon as long as they continue to pour money into ridiculous projects like getting exclusive titles to become unexclusive and the other way around. I don't even expect them to turn a profit in the 3'rd Xbox console era. I do like that they're finally coming out with a couple of games worthy of playing, I'm finally a bit enthusiastic about the 360.
the majority of all the fanboys, microsoft nintendo and sony are all at the sony ps2 and ps3 forums.. check the page comments... so so many
Hmm Microsoft made immense profit by intentionally releasing a faulty 360 run with a deliberately decreased warranty and subsequently charging the customers way more then the repair actually costs. I expect Sony to take note and do the exact same thing. Nintendo doesnt pull crap like that. They deserve this.
I'm still waiting for Nintendo to claim the top spot in Australia. I don't see this happening. As much as I love Nintendo, most Australians can't tell a good game. FIFA ZOMG NEED FOR SPEED ZOMG THE SIMS ZOMG!!!
"Oh and Vellyvel, no where is Sony's country anymore, people are smarter than you give them credit." Actually, we have so many PlayStation fanboys over here its unbelievable.
"Plan on Nintendo being top dog for next five years. The other two (MS and Sony) haven't even turned a profit in at least two years. " Microsoft make $75 per each 360 sold now :)
i agree berfomek. "seems like n64 and gamecube got dissed on getting games" this time they are inovative and cheap ... everyone can get what they sell for less price and now are getting all the quality software . i do wish they would update the capcom games ... maybe give us snk vs capcom , marvel vs capcom , ... all the arcade ports of old school games , and all of the capcom classics , midway classics and so forthe that they put on the psp. "why dont they do that??? they would sell more games wouldnt they?
Well...let's just say that it feels rather diffrent than in the past few years where nintendo pretty much always had the short end of the stick
The Black DS Lite is £99 in the UK and the White PSP is £149. The time will come when it won't be expensive to buy both. You have to admit that Nintendo only had one console selling in 2006. If the Cube still had the software, we might have seen a different story. You have to also consider what the PSP sales would be like if PS2 software had come to a stop like the cube. Sony were selling software for 2 platforms so the market is split. If we see strong software and hardware sales for the Wii and on the virtual console you may see software sales for the DS take a dramatic drop. I think it would be a good idea if you could download games on the virtual console onto a SD card and them stick the card into the DS to play them.
i got a ds lite at software etc 119.99... traded gameboy advance and a few games and got it down to 60$ . i have resident evil , metroid hunter and ridge racer . i kept 1 gboy advance game street fighter alpha 3 "which is the best outta the 4" i'm oldskool tho so my opionion doesnt count.
Plan on Nintendo being top dog for next five years. The other two (MS and Sony) haven't even turned a profit in at least two years.
WOAH! Thats £200,000,000 Worth of DS's sold! (aprox, of course). And thats just in the UK! And thats just with the DS! Hey, guys, take a look back at this time last year... who was the biggest seller then? The PSP.... Well done Nintendo! Well done :)
FIFA will always sell more than most final fantasys. But FF is always far better, sales mean very little in the way of quality.
think about this. nintendo is the most succesfull console manufactuer.as its the only one left. not sony or microsoft. think about what i am saying before you reply to this
This news coming from the place where Fifa constantly reigns supreme in the gaming charts. Obviously one for orginal gaming!
I bought a DS instead of a PSP just because of the price, you could get like, 6 DSs for the price of 1 PSP....
Damn, dude. You suck at math. If you think you can get six DS's for the price of one PSP....Hopefully you were being facetious. Last I checked the DS is $129 and a PSP is $199 for the bare bones version. Even the $250 bundle you're still not getting six DS's for $250.
"Getting the DS for FPS' is like marrying a hooker for the clap. " AHAHAHAHA... I just laughed so hard my boss came in to find out what I was doing. Well said sir.
I bought a DS instead of a PSP just because of the price, you could get like, 6 DSs for the price of 1 PSP, and considering I only ever use portable games when I'm away from my PC (not very often) it just wasn't worth the price.
"really? I am suprised. UK is usually SONY minded." Nintendo is changing people minds. And they are doing it the right way, with hard work and a good, original product. The sky's the limit for them right now.
Good news but i doubt non gamers will buy alot of games for the system, they'll buy brain training and then leave it lol. But their are quite a few games that will apeal to non gamers, the card game collection for instance is an absolute must for non gamers. The reason that not so many games are bought from shops in the U.K by the way is the fact that getting them online IS cheaper, and alot of older people simply don't have the time or hassle with going into cities and shopping, especially on run up to christmas. Alot of people more and more buy their games online, especially people NOT bothered about getting games on day one(like non gamers). Why do you think amazon sold out of Wii's in 10 minutes? and retail stores STILL have pre orders lol.
This will translate into Wii sales, no doubt. Especially with Sony giving the finger to Europe in multiple ways (delaying the console and banning imports). They'll regret this later...
They're only being sold to parents for their little kids. They buy the one or two games, and then don't buy any more. We don't sell any games at all, only consoles.
YES (and I don't even have one, spend 53 hours on my nephews Nintendogs and though it was probably some of the worst 53 hours in my life, I will never forget my Chihuahua Abi)
I love my DS Lite, as good as the portable console is. It's the games that are the reason it's been as big as success as it as. I've never been a big Nintendo fan, in fact I never really liked them at all but since buying a DS I now see why they are one of the best companies in the gaming industry and the Nintendo Wii (getting on the 8th of December) will know doubt rock. Say goodbye to Playstation and Sony as it's Nintendo and Microsoft that rule the nest nowaday
I was betting on Sony winning this-gen handheld market. I was all over the PSP when it came out, but as time goes by I am glad I never got one, and am now getting interested in DS. I would love to give my sister a Pink DS for christmas with Nintedogs. In the past I bought her a GBA with spyro for her travels round Oz, and even a PocketPC (early philips clamshell running first Windows CE. The DS might finally get her off WinMine and Solitaire...
@Lilac_Benjie What should i do? post a picture with me holding both systems? scan the receipts and fax them to you? I really don't like being called a liar by a complete stranger. Maybe i'm just weird, but i prefer my PSP over my DS. This is my personal opinion though. Please don't start flaming right away.
Finally, people are seeing that Sony really don't care about European consumers. It's sort of embarrassing that a low-powered system is overtaking the sales of a next-gen console. Nintendo is back.
lol i remember getting bashed on the forums for saying the ds was better then the psp for long term appeal, now figures say more then opion, 2 in 60 people in the uk have a ds, thats a gd percentage ds has hit in the UK
