DS TV goes on sale in Japan

Nintendo launches aerial attachment; demand for new TV service said to have crashed Web site.

Yesterday, Nintendo released DS TV, a peripheral which was originally announced back in 2004, but had hardly been heard of since.

The DS TV costs ¥6,800 ($62.70), and can be used with the original DS or the DS Lite. The design is different from the prototype shown in 2004, as it features a simple aerial cartridge which plugs in the back of the handheld, and no base unit.

The top screen is used for the TV picture, while the bottom screen can be used to do things such as change channels and take notes.

According to Web site J-Cast, there was an avalanche of interest when preorders were offered, and within two hours the Web site was down. A spokesperson for Nintendo said, "As it was television--and not a game--we intended to begin accepting the orders quietly without prior announcement. We had not expected that so many accesses [to the Web page] would be made."

A Nintendo spokesperson told GameSpot that it currently had no plans to bring DS TV to other regions.

TV in the US is switching to all digital soon. so if they did make this in the us, then it probably wouldnt be untill then.

I wonder if it picks up satelite or local airwaves?

Serraph105 5 pts

meh too small a screen for me also looking at how the psp went down because of all the multimedia stuff i really cant see this as a decent invention

Mortichai 5 pts

Well, there's always the GBA version of movies, such as Shrek, SharkTale, etc, etc, Cradleofbodom. But DS cartridge movies would be hot. I always wanted a play-yan. *sniffle*

Cradleofbodom 5 pts

TV? Y not movies, psp sells movies, most of the time TV only has crap on it anyways.

azone12 5 pts

damn even if they bring it to north america they wont bring it to canada wedx13x Have you ever heard of moonshell

DraginHikari 5 pts

@Those who bring up the Game Gear The biggest difference here is the capability of the Game Gear and DS in pure hardware sense, I remember this Game Gear attachment and most people I know who had couldn't stand the thing due to the color quality and manufunction some had with it.

thrashunreal 5 pts

Heh, I'm sure they'll release it in America. You just have to give it time. Not making definite plans is part of hyping up the item.

Ah_joy_lunch 5 pts

If it attracted so much interest that it crashed why the hell wouldn't they release it outside of Japan?

Merl57 5 pts

boo. Eventually there will be an iphone killer that plays High req games

neo_nerd 6 pts

So if it's not coming to America I guess that Australia has no hope then.

Giratina667 5 pts

I think It's part of their overall strategy.

GawNawRaw 5 pts

Cool, I would buy one. Since most of the time, all the TVs in my house are occupied, I can use this to watch TV.

I find it sad how Nintendo is trying to tap into the PSP market with a Web Browser and a TV attachment. Why do they need to waste their time? They're way ahead of the PSP in sales, why bother?

Konfusion 5 pts

Well, I'd like it, but since I play my DS mostly while in the subway, chances are I wouldn't have any signal... so... bleh.

Junior_AIN 10 pts

Cool, but I wouldn't get one of these......

P-MaT000 5 pts

looks cool but i woouldnt want to watch tv on a really small screen

wedx13x 5 pts

seems pretty cool, however i think nintendo would have ALOT more people interested if they created a device for the DS that could store videos on it. that would eliminate any regional or signal problems and is just way better tbh imagine 11 series of south park on your DS! DS TV still seems cool and im sure it will do well :) plz come to the UK ^.^

thestickman 5 pts

Man if there's any way this thing could work with U.S. broadcasters, they need to release this as soon as possible!

NinjaMunkey01 5 pts

I WANT THAT! is it just the 5 free channels or is this digital like freeview or something? otherwise when the digital witchover starts this will be useless.

gameeer1 5 pts

Lulz, I wish I could watch some of those Japanese game shows...Better than the ones we have in North America...>___> Human Tetris anyone?

gonzalezj1 5 pts

Does anyone remember the tv antenna attachment for the Sega GameGear? This sounds pretty similar, except people might actually buy it.

kavadias1981 5 pts

I want it! It'll kill so much time on the college bus.

PS360Fanboy 5 pts

willripyouanew1 5 pts

So if it's not coming to america, what the heck should i care about this.

EsYuGee 5 pts

To all the people wondering if this will come to the US: No, this will most likely not come to the US because it uses 1seg. Regardless of whether or not Nintendo wanted to release it in the US, it would be useless. That type of signal isn't available in the US. In Japan it is quite common to see it on mobile phones already (as well as 3-5 megapixel cameras, but I digress). It is not a regular TV tuner that we are used to back in the States, so it won't pick up local stations like regular antennas.

Mowshnan 5 pts

Awsome! More cool stuff that I can't get because it's Japan only. Wheee!

kezsim 5 pts

i doubt this will come to europe, just cuz it would be really hard to transfer NTSC-J's 525 scanlines to PAL's 625 on that small screen. (Don't complain, PAL and especially SECAM totally pwn NTSC in refresh rates and resolution) as for us Americans, the Japanese TV standard is based on the crappy NTSC standard we waist our eyes on. (Go USA!! way to impress our worthless standards on other countries!!)

Generic_Dude 5 pts

Just might have to import this, after I figure out how / if it works.

ImSwordMan 5 pts

Oh Japan, how I envy you and your exclusive Nintendo items, and exclusive items in general.

dinodefender 5 pts

COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL;;;;;;;;;;; THIS WILL ROCK IN THE USA USA USA :^) omg If it only would come here :^(

sscloud123 5 pts

agrees with RaiKageRyu, that would be pretty sweet. i hope this comes out in europe................we never get anything first.........sometimes we don't get this kind of stuff fullstop.

lostn 5 pts

So much for being purely a games machine.

Yes the Tv Tuner for the Gamegear was amazing technology in its day, the game gear was really ahead of its time. Its a shame that the battery life absolutely sucked. But it really was ahead of its time, colour screen, back-lit.. tv tuner... But, it was too much technology too soon. Nintendo releasing this on the DS is perfect. DS' battery life is pretty awesome, and its clamshell design makes it really nice to carry around. And the tilted screen makes it easier to view on your lap or a desk. Its a shame that in the UK - the services for TV reception are so poor, that this product won't fare too well. It will probably make it in America, but in the UK - internet is slow, digital tv isn't perfect and analog signals are ending. And there arent enough people with devices like this that would make it popular enough to have a proper service :( Long live Japanese technology! :D
