it looks like "same old stuff". There doesn't appear to be any new technology introduced. Champions online, DC Universe etc have all done this before. I will save my money for something unique.
Megapublisher teams with Funcom to distribute modern-day MMORPG through its Partners program; release date remains TBA.
Following its delay by "some months" in September, The Secret World has largely been a self-describing title. However, that may soon change for Funcom's latest massively multiplayer online role-playing game, as the Norwegian studio announced today that it has teamed with EA Partners to copublish The Secret World.
Announced for the Xbox 360 and PC in 2007, The Secret World posits an alternate universe in which a modern-day world has been torn asunder by the reemergence of magic and other occult activity. Players will join one of three occult factions and battle one another for control of strategic locations throughout the world, ranging from Egypt to New York to Seoul. The game will also come replete with mythical beasts and slavering monsters.
The Secret World is just the latest in a string of third-party titles that EA has helped bring to market through its publishing and distribution resources. Other titles include such notable hits as Valve's Orange Box, indie efforts like Hothead Games' Deathspank, and failed ventures such as Realtime Worlds' APB.
Funcom has yet to attach a release date to the game, though its delay came after Funcom moved a significant portion of its Norwegian headquarters to a new Montreal location as a cost-cutting measure. The studio's previous MMORPGs include Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures and Anarchy Online.
Gamers wanting to secure their spot in The Secret World's open beta-testing phase can do so by picking up a three-month subscription to Age of Conan. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of The Secret World.
1 of the things that I like about this game is that I think it will attract a more maturer audience. The haters will be the young. Fine by me.
And to think, this could have been an awesome single player game. With stories completely different from the start depending on the faction you choose. Instead, it will be an MMO, with a great background and setting and lore, but basically zero plot and a lot of combat. Seems like a waste, but that's probably just me
It's Dreamfall meets Lovecraft, which means that I've definitely got to give it a shot when it comes out. I just wish they'd hurry up and release it.
@maximumbarmage FFXI, Phantasy Star, Test Drive Unlimited, all for the 360. I would also argue that RDR's online mode is like a mini-MMO.
Great news! Not only because they haven't given up on the console version (yet), but also because maybe they'll make Dreamfall Chapters a little sooner than expected.
I've been greatly looking forward to this game. One of the best MMO concepts so far. Although now I'm a little worried about the graphics, based on the video...
We're long overdue for a quality urban-fantasy game. After Shadowrun has apparently been shelved, Legendary failed and the adaptation of Night Watch went without notice, it seems barely any developers have the guts to combine magic and the modern world. That said, the story sounds VERY similar to Lukyanenko's urban-fantasy classic The Night Watch, but I guess I can't be picky when the genre is so rare today.
Haha, MMO. If any of you seriously think that a 360 version of this is actually going to come out, then I'm afraid you are kidding yourselves. It's well noted at this point that there's only one console that's proven itself open to MMO makers, and 360 ain't it. All those MMOs previously announced for 360 haven't all been cancelled or dropped off the radar for nothing.
Uhhh.....well, I know it's not exactly like it, but this sounds awfully close to Shadowrun, which has a similar background. It seems more realistic, doing away with the mythical creatures, but Im curious as to how similar this will be. Either way, I always prefer modern/sci-fi settings to fantasy ones. I'll have to check this one out.
the kool thing about this is that the secret societys that are mentioned do exist, certaintly the templars and illuminati. To bad i got a ps3. Mayby when it comes out ill try it on my freinds xbox
If can say one thing is that you got to give them props for creativity, whether they will succeed into turning this into a stellar game awaits to be seen
so its an old game been in works long time well hope it sells but i think it be for xbox360 and pc only
Ruined with magic? Uh no. It appears that magic makes this mmo, which is fine. I love magic. Now magic in an urban setting I've yet to experience. Seems exciting. Looking forward to it, just don't keep us waiting.
Boy that sure clarified how she got her power. LOL, its looking good though. And why do people keep refering to DCU? This looks nothing like DCU, and judging from this video, will not play or feel anything like DCU. I got the beta for DCU on PS3, played it 2 days and havnt touched it since. In my opinion its way too boring and generic in pretty much every aspect. The only good thing I found about it is the customization
I have no doubt this game will be good, but not at launch. I don't buy MMORPGs at launch anymore. Have been let down too much.
Looking forward to this Very Much. Love Funcom! But those "The Longest Journey" episodes seems to have reached Episode 3 status.
ah PS3 and x-box.....x-box and PS3... DCU for sony.....and the sectret world for microsoft.... its time like these....im glad i have both
Why cant you just play a game for fun anymore? Everybody always has to have some kind of incentive. Theres no such thing as playing a game anymore, its more like a job for a lot of people. Anyways since theres no levles Im sure there will be other stuff to make up for that.. they arent stupid.
Well, that's good, I suppose... Certainly an interesting looking game - let's hope it doesn't take the same path as another interesting looking game (APB)
