What we heard: Besides Tomb Raider and Hitman, one of Eidos Interactive's better-known franchises is Deus Ex. The original installment in the series, which blended role-playing and action elements in a conspiratorial near-future dystopia, was a critical and commercial success in 2000. (It was ported to the PlayStation 2 two years later.)
When it was released in 2004 for the PC and Xbox, Deus Ex Invisible War received decent reviews and saw solid US sales of more than 300,000 units, according to NPD. However, that wasn't good enough to stop pre-SCi-buyout Eidos from closing series developer Ion Storm in 2005 following the departure of its founder Warren Spector. And when the shooter spin-off Deus Ex: Clan Wars was renamed Project: Snowblind to distance itself from the brand, the Deus Ex franchise went missing, and was presumed dead.
This week, though, came word that the Deus Ex series is being revived. In an video interview with MusiquePlus, Eidos France director general Patrick Melichor revealed that a new game in the series was in the works at the British publisher's recently formed Montreal, Canada, studio. "The first mission for the team will be to bring back to life an extraordinary title called Deus Ex," said the well-groomed Melichor. The executive also revealed that some 40 developers would be committed to the project.
The official story: US Eidos reps wouldn't comment on the Melichor interview. However, he himself gave the Deus Ex project revelation a major caveat. "We're still waiting for final confirmation [on the new Deus Ex], which should happen in the next few months," said Melichor.
Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that a new Deus Ex has been officially been announced. Not bogus that it's looking very likely.
I'd be satisfied if they just remade Deus Ex using the HL graphics engine...heck i'd buy the same game with amazing graphics...imagine...
I played through the first one several times. It was really engaging and had plenty of variety to it. I hope they make a third installment to the series... that would be awesome.
I'm really hoping this can live up to the first game. Even though I enjoyed the second game it fell a bit short of the first one.
Coool, now if someone could come out with Diablo 3, my two fave games would be back in cutting edge graphics.
They should stick to the actual concept of the first game and improvise over it. JC Denton should definitely be there, but in a different situation. They could even make a prequel of the original one and highlight his growing up without his parents, his training at the Academy, and so forth. It would not be bad.
The original team behind the first one is no more with Eidos. Hope it'll be a good game. But I'm sure it won't be like the original one. That was such perfect game... none will ever get close.
The original Deus Ex is probably one of the best games ever made. The sequel was alright, but it didn't have the special something of the original. If they make a third game, and i hope they do, they better stick with the original formula.
This would be great...I just finished a playthrough of the original Deus Ex, and at some point here, I'll be playing Invisible War again. It's a great series, and it would be great to see it resurrected, whether as a continuation of the story, a prequel, or even just a next-gen remake of the original.
I've always considered Phil Spector's games to be excellent - I enjoyed the hell out of Deus Ex (it was bundled with Unreal Tourney and Thief II when I got a Sound Blaster several PCs ago) and I consider it the type of PC game that all others should be judged. While System Shock 2 was amazingly close in terms of quality and and in-depth storyline, it's my opinion that we haven't seen that sort of attention to detail in a while. The closest I remember seeing lately was the release of Half-life 2, which while it was a blast to play and visually stunning, still felt like it was on rails. One of the things that I'll always remember was the amazing feeling of knowing there are several outcomes to JC Denton's actions. Great writing, great feel and as I recall really good voice acting as well. I honestly hope that they release a proper PC version first, and then worry about porting to other systems. The Xbox Deus Ex IW was something that sold because people were desperate for their Deus Ex fix...not something I'd want to play again. Of course, getting Phil Spector involved would be fantastic, but unlikely. Can't wait to see this tho...now if only there was more info on a new Fallout...:)
The first was was one of the greatest games of all time, it was impossible for invisible war to live up to it. I hope they make a third-- snowblind was just not enough
Just found out about this last night. I'm still having trouble believing it. The single best PC game of all time is making a comeback. Unreal. Will they do it justice this time? Can its spirit be brought back to life in an improved and justly manner? I hope so. if this project is even in the works, I think it's because someone higher up definitely is in as much love with the first one (and its profits) as the masses. Patrick, you and the entire team have my backing on this. Ne lachez pas!
I dunno the first game was amazing but invisible war was terrible. They'll probably just mess it up again.
If everything goes well and Eidos doesn't botch it, then Deus Ex 3 will be just like the first game, and more......
This will be my only post ever, just because the Deus Ex series needs to be continued. Its that good. JC Denton rocks.
holy hot pants!!!!! ,, suuper psyched * erases project snowblind from mind* lol, project snowblind, not bad, but no jc denton, and dont get me started on deus ex 2, good game also, but just no deus ex 1. Its just not comparable. Bring on deus ex 3 frenchies!!!!
Deus Ex rocks!! One of the best games of all time. a perfect combination of RPG & 1st person shooter with an immersive environment that was light years ahead of its time. Perfect time to re-do this classic title with all the new technology. Deus Ex proved that a game can be smart, fun, immersive and good. CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS !!!!
If it is like Invisible War and they don't go back to the games roots, I'm really not that interested.
OMG Deus Ex was ace ... the second one was a let down tho :( but i hope they can pull it off again ^_^
Deus ex is my favourite game of all time, while other games offered expansive worlds, and considered that freedom, deus ex offered a truer sense of freedom, choices. To the person saying that other games have done it better, I have to strongly disagree with that. I have completed those games, in hope that they would offer me that mental freedom that deus ex did. As much as i loved oblivion for instance, and to a lesser extent, morrowind, or even gta, they let you roam, and complete quests in any order. But how you actually completed them, was simplistic, and shallow. In deus ex, you have a limited open path, but within that path, you have options. And that is true freedom for the intelligent gamer. I was always extremely confused by gamespots score of the original game. They gave it a score in the 8's, whereas, even the haters of the game would agree it deserved higher than that. Regardless, I really do hope that the game lives up to the potential the first game set. The second one was a decent game, but it removed 60% of the options or freedoms based on player actions, that dx1 did so fantastically. And for that, and the console roots, it suffered. BRING ON DENTON.
I hope they can make a decent sequel to deus ex, not invisible war. I was saddened when i got the the new one. I think it was terrible. anything will be better than the last one.
Honestly, I'd prefer to play something like Deus Ex over Oblivion. I love rpg's and I love FPS's, so to mix the 2 in a swords and mangic setting seemed right... but to take such a blend and bring it to a futuristic world... yea, I'm all over that!
dunno why people are ripping on invisible war. had a great atmosphere, story, characters, etc. both deus games are def. in my top 5 games of all time list. would LOVE another one....
Ahh finally i absolutely loved the first 1, its a game that i think about when i think about my childhood, is that weird? 2nd 1 was pretty great too, i really hope the 3rd lives up to the precedent left by its predecessors (hehe i use long words) anywho - Woo
Why does everyone think that Deus Ex: Invisible war was a bad game? I like it just as much as the first, in fact they simplified the interface and actually made it possible for you to max out your skills so I liked it even more from that perspective. The story was just as compelling except it didn't have as many twists as the first but I still walked away from that game rocked to my core by the powerful message it conveyed.
I can't remember being this excited since the news that there would be a Deus Ex 2... and we all know how that one turned out. Eidos, please don't screw this one up.
ah!..finally some Good news!!..hope its gonna b true!!.. :) Hope next DeusEx game will have revolutionized gameplay jus like DX1 !!...
I hope not. Invisible Crap was horrible. Why should I have to look directly at an item, and press a button to pick it up? Autopickup has been standard since Wolfenstien 3D. For a game not to have it is completely absurd!
