Hajime Tabata has expressed interest in developing for Sony's handheld.

Final Fantasy Type-0 and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII director Hajime Tabata has expressed interest in developing specifically for Sony's latest handheld gaming platform, the PS Vita.

According to a retrospective interview on the PlayStation Awards 2012 page, Tabata said that he was impressed with the functionality of the touch screen.

"I had an impression [that] it was an exceedingly good piece of hardware. Since I [had been] making Final Fantasy titles on the PSP, I have an interest in [developing] for a larger device. As someone concerned with game production, there is nothing other than the Vita that offers that largeness, high density and luminescence, and ability to [render] high-quality images."

Final Fantasy Type-0 won the gold prize at last year's PlayStation Award ceremony. The PSP title has yet to be localised in North American and European markets. Fore more information, check out GameSpot's preview of the game.

The vita seriously needs more mature games on it than little deviants disgaea 3 and other very childish games. (By mature I don't mean m rated but carries a more serious tone like persona, corpse party my brother having games like those was one of the reasons I bought the vita.)

This could be fun, if done right.

Good luck to you Mr. Final Fantasy Director Hajime Tabata. :)

With all the hype with the new wii u console and console gaming in general, the psp is just being left in the dust while the ds is still alive and going. Developers are scared of the vita sales and dont wont to take risks on it.

This actually sounds pretty cool! I wish I had a PSP

@baus1You could still get one but you'll have to import FF Type-0, it seems likely that Square Enix will localize that title to NA anytime soon since they are busy with Lightning Return: FFXIII, FFVersus XIII, and FFXIV: A Realm's Reborn.

make sure to localized it ;)

No, no fuck that! How about they release Versus 13? Or a 7 remake? Or Kingdom Hearts 3? They're wasting so much time making these BS decisions and games.

I was disappointed in the announcement they are making ANOTHER FFXIII game. From what I have seen all people really want is FF Versus.  Just like from the Star Wars genre, Battlefront III is the game most wanted, but they have little or no plans to actually release it.  If this doesn't tell you that the publishers dont give a damn about what the consumer wants then Idk what to tell you.

I don't have a lot of faith in Square-Enix doing this right these days.  We'd probably just wind up getting something like FFXIII the handheld version.

@endorbr I disagree they may mess up there console decisions more these days but they are great at putting together handheld versions of games. (I'm not including mobile in this). KH3D/BBS, Theatrhythm (Its an alright spin-off), FFIV complete collection, FF Type-0, Dragon Quest DS games. These are just a few, the handheld market is more their domain than the console market I think it would be a smart choice to develop for Vita after all they are making Bravely Default for 3DS.

@gamespotgunners  @endorbr The fact is I want versus 13 out already I mean I like their games still I enjoyed both final fantasy 13's but I mean i have been waiting for versus for so dang long.

Game production should involve more than the visual aspect. I guess with this mindset floating around Squex. It comes to no surprise that their wannabe Hollywood blockbusters lack in everything else...

Well it's good that someone involved with the series is interested in the VITA, but hopefully they make a new FF game that I actually want to play.

I was really hoping there would be an "enhanced" Vita port of Type-0 released in the west. I'm pretty sure that would push me far enough to finally get a Vita.

Well I enjoyed the hell outta Crisis Core, and although the game still 'aint out over here yet the demo of type 0, agito, whatever it was, seemed like it could be good... So if he ever makes the game I'll be happy to buy a vita, still waiting on some good games and that price cut next year (not that it needs the price cut, just need Sony to get some games on it!!!!)

I couldn't care less to be honest.

To me it looks like most of the GOOD jrpgs are staying in Japan, or comming out in EU/NA few years after their JP release. The only ones we're getting here are the medicore ones, like FFXIII-2 .

At lease we got the Witcher, and they don't. Middle finger to you Japan.

A new title? Something like Ultimate: Final Fantasy Battle Zero de Versus 013? Yeah, sounds original like always.

Would it be total cliche if i say, i want FFVIII remake ;-)

Well they already trademark FF Type-1, 2, and 3. I think it will come out on Vita since the first one came out on PSP...

tightwad34

How is this even any sort of a surprise? They make so many damn FF games I couldn't keep track if I tried. They will probably make at least 5 for the Vita in the next couple of years, whether they are original or not.

How about remaking the universally acclaimed FFIX; best scores, the creators favorite FF, the series music artists most favorite work.

Shame we're still bogged down to FF7 level.

gamespotgunners

@Ayfauri I love both games so wouldn't mind either being remade. But its nostalgia after all particularly here in Europe it was the first FF ever released here and expanded the genre to a large audience so there's no denying the reason why people ask for VII so much.

I wish more developers realized that the PS Vita is a great piece of kit...it's a lot of hardware with virtually every input and communiations scheme that can be crammed into a 2012 portable device.

I thought the psp was already dead?? who plays on this anymore??!  its as dead as the frog outside my sidewalk smh

gamespotgunners

@cesarexec22 Since there's no UMD passport here I still play Patapon and Duodecim on it as well as FFIV complete collection. Plus in Japan it still does quite well some weeks it still outsells the PSV. Its only here in the west people care very little about it anymore.

@cesarexec22 I haven't touched my PSP in more than a year.  I do all of my mobile gaming on my phone via PS1, Sega Genesis, and SNES emulators.  No need to cart that clunky thing in my pocket anymore.

JimmeyBurrows

@cesarexec22 I still play mine on an almost daily basis... mainly old ps1 games on the go, but occasionally something designed for it.
