Final Fantasy IV sequel Wii-bound
ESRB's online database indicates 2D RPG originally released for Japanese mobile phones will appear on Nintendo's console.
In July, Square Enix scored a critical hit with its redux of Final Fantasy IV for the Nintendo DS. Named a runner-up in GameSpot's 2008 DS platform awards (and the Reader's Choice winner), the role-playing game originally released in the US as Final Fantasy II for the Super Nintendo featured all-new 3D graphics, CG cutscenes with voice-overs, a remixed score by series composer Nobuo Uematsu, and a multiplayer head-to-head battle mode.
Now, Square Enix is hoping to follow up that that success with Final Fantasy IV's sequel on the Wii. As revealed by a listing in the Entertainment Software Rating Board's online database, the publisher is prepping Final Fantasy IV: The After Years for Nintendo's console. Though it is unclear whether or not the game will be a WiiWare digital download or boxed copy release, it is apparently based on the 2008 Japanese mobile phone game Final Fantasy IV: The After (no "Years"). Square Enix had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.
According to the ESRB's rating summary, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years will be a 2D RPG, which indicates that it will not benefit from the 3D revamp enjoyed by last year's DS game. No other details were revealed, though the ESRB did caution alcohol-sensitive parents that "an item called 'Bacchus Wine' is occasionally used to defeat enemies in battle."
i never knew the wii is backwards compatible with mobile phone games
they really need to start porting over the remakes onto the PSP. Sure we've got FF1 & 2, CC and tactics, but we need more. Lots more.
DSi Ware PLEASE
Although FFIV is one of my favorite games of all time, and I would play the sequel, I don't understand why Square-Enix keeps rehashing games like this. The original idea with the Final Fantasy games is they were not supposed to have sequels. Each game was supposed to have an independent story and universe. I wish they would quit milking the franchises and get on with brand new ideas and games. How many branches of FFVII do we have now? I love that game too, but this is getting quite sickening.
interesting to hear, FF4 was a good game, and bacchus wine thing, the kids are more likely to get the alcohol problems they fear from the parents themselves then any form of media.
FFIV, IMO, concluded without leaving too many things left open and unexplained like FFVII. I love the remake on DS and it will be interesting to see where Squeenix takes the story. Hmmm...Imagine getting to play as Golbez :)
I heard about this sequel a year or two ago on Wikipedia. I hope it's a Wiiware game, seeing as how it started as a Mobile phone game. $15 for a full on sequel to a classic FF game that just re-captured people's imaginations last year? Sure. That's what I think a $15 Wiiware game should be.
FFVI remake: I heard a rumor somewhere that square is actually wanting to do console remake of this game. I think it's this months Nintendo Power that said that. I have nothing to confirm that or even suggest it's true, but that was something I heard.
Do I smell a DSi-ware download maybeh? Pass the Bacchus! =)
Now that's hawt!
Thank god it's 2D. I hate the new bigheaded FFs for the DS.
Kool.... More good games for the Wii, FFIV was awesome.
The remake of FFVII will go multi-platform instead of PS3 exclusive, if SE ever produces such project!
Why don't they all Final Fantasy games on the Wii as well as the other platforms. Instead of having to creep up the list
working their way up the final fantasy list, can't wait to get the next games:) hopefully they make them
For the love of God! A remake of Final Fantasy 7 for PS3 already! I'm dying here!
dammit... i want it for ds
also sprdougherty ff6 was a nintendo final fantasy so nintendo would be mad about that and so would nintendo fanboys
sprdougherty, the reason they port them to DS isn't only because of the simpler graphics, it's also because it's a handheld...I don't think many ppl would buy a remake FF game on ps2 compared to DS
I want this sequel :)
i will kill somebody if FF6 is remade for the DS. it's by far the greatest in the series, and deserves AT THE VERY LEAST a PS2 remake.
If Sony actually cared to make a buck or two they'd talk with Square Enix about getting FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX to PSN so people could play them on their PS3s and PSPs.
FFIV is my favorite in the series and I was really happy with the DS remake. This will be a must buy for me.
At this point I wonder if we'll ever get FFXIII
Im not an FF fan but I have a friend that says FFIV was her favorate of the FF games and (Benie the Sage) also boast FFIV as being one of the best FF games plot wise and that the sub villian in the game looked like an actual villian unlike the other FF villians.
Well thats great, I guess instead of giving us what we want-FF XIII- they keep giving us all this crap, lets see how many games did they make for FF VII after FF VII was actually released,3,4, Iost count. SquareEnix needs to focus on what we actually what, that being FF XIII (earlier), instead of giving us all these stupid spin-offs. Im beggining to that I should have named myself "SquareSoftFan13"......
Oh yay! More franchise milking! Seriously, SE should stop making side stories/remakes/terrible sequels to games and instead focus on creating one solid FF entry every three years or so. That's all I really want from SE anymore.
I suppose I should replay FFIV to refresh my memory of the story. Didn't buy the remake, since I beat it when it was still Final Fantasy II back in the SNES days, and finally bought it when it was bundled with Chrono Trigger as Final Fantasy Chronicles. I'm hoping they will remake my favorite as well (FFVI) and perhaps port the original FFT to another system, since I don't own a PSP...sadly...
I like how people whine about this not beeing a new game, it's a game that only came out on cellphones in Japan, so for us, it's a new game, stop whining and enjoy a new game instead. And really i liked FF4 so to be able to play the sequel is nice.
I didn't start playing videogames a lot until the release of GBA, so all of these remakes are like new games for me, which is awesome. I have to admit though, if I had a PS3, I'd be pretty pissed...no wonder it's taking so long to get FFXIII out haha. Oh well, Killzone 2 should tide you guys over while I get to play through all of these Final Fantasies =).
Loved the original but make a sequal picking up where FF4 left off or just move on. I am ok with remakes, but there is only so many times you can do it before it gets old.
this is great for us nintendo fans that got final fantasy stolen away from us by sony, for a very long time
This comment thread has officially proven that you all are a bunch of whiners.
Soo... FFIV-2? Sure hope it doesn't turn out like FFX-2. But yeah, with all the time they're wasting on remakes and ports (although, FFIVDS was, indeed, an awesome project... though not done by SE itself - 'twas Matrix Software), they should be pouring some time into FFVII for the PS3, dang it, lol. But yeah, in response to texasgoldrush, don't worry... FFVI is most likely on the way to DS. They put out the SNES trio on the GBA and Matrix has expressed interest continuing on with V and VI. And, I hope they do, as they did a good job with III and an even better job with IV.
I remember the good old days when Square stuck to a policy that no FF world would be reused, and each new game within the brand delivered something new, fresh, and enjoyable. Ah to be a kid again.
Instead of making a FFVII remake, make a FFVI remake!!!!!!!
sure why not. it's not like any of us FF fans want a new game. just keep turfing out these while still refusing to give me the FF7 remake i've been wanting since the PS3 tec-demo XD
Spinoffs, remakes, ports, etc *sigh* Square was once a great and promising company, now I have to second guess that.
Talk about tapping the well. Apparently Square is giving up on trying to release new IPs and just tapping the hell out of the Final Fantasy well. Look at how they rushed Infinite Unidiscovery & Last Remnant out the door (both felt unfinished and buggy) while they keep re-releasing FF games and now starting up the sequels. As if the violation of FFVII wasn't bad enough now we get it on FFIV. *Sigh* I'm just gonna hope its good and keep my fingers crossed.
Ugh. More milkage on Squaresoft's games by Enix. Hopefully it won't be like X-2 or any of the FFVII side crap that keeps messing with the story, but it probably will be... Though Crisis was very good.
Bacchus Wine? Well I was gonna buy it but nevermind T_T
ugh ... no more wiiware please ....
I read on a page that final fantasy XIII will be released in America on August 20th... http://www.cdmarket.com.ar/?Id=41&ParentCID=5&Template=SubCategory
Since i have all the originals i am kinda tired of all the remakes.
Out of the three current generation systems I own a Wii & Xbox 360, so, yeah, I think I'll be playing both Final Fantasy IV: The After Years and Final Fantasy XIII. Not to go without mention, I have the DS version of Final Fantasy IV and it was awesome.
JackHoleFace00 Pff... have fun Wii owners. I'll be playing FF XIII. You know, a modern-generation game? Should be fun How do know if all of us are Wii only owners? Speaking of Final Fantasy XIII, I'll be playing the game this year while you sit on your *** waiting until 2010. Why am I receiving thumbs down for saying this game will be a WiiWare title? I know for sure NONE of you would pay full price for this so don't go giving me thumbs down.
I wouldnt surprised if Final Fantasy IV was better than XIII
@JackHoleFace00 Yeah, have fun waiting another year or two for it. I'll have fun enjoying games that have actually been released.
Why does FF4 get a sequel? I just don't get it.
Woot. Let's get drunk on some Bacchus Wine
